Put down the cayenne-lemon water and step away from the herbal tea. Cleanses and detox products like these don’t remove toxins, says Dr. Jen Gunter, and some of them may even be hurting your health. Learn how your body rids itself of harmful substances and what you can do to keep this system running smoothly.
Think you know how your body works? Think again! Dr. Jen Gunter is here to shake up everything you thought you knew — from how much water you need to drink to how often you need to poop and everything in between. This TED original series will tell you the truth about what’s *really* going on inside you. (Made possible with the support of Oura)

“Should I do a cleanse?”
I hear people asking this question a lot.
If you’re hoping it will remove
toxins from your body,
that’s just not going to happen.

[Body Stuff with Dr. Jen Gunter]
Detoxes and cleanses are very popular.
They come in many forms,
from charcoal-infused lemonades
to detox teas,
and they often have a hefty price tag.
The idea of cleansing
isn’t anything new —
it’s been around for thousands of years.
For centuries, medicine and religion
were deeply intertwined,
and there was a lot of focus
on ridding the body
of impurities and sickness
related to bad or imbalanced humors.
Bloodletting, purging, fasting —
they were all well-regarded treatments.
Today, the wellness industry
has picked up on our desire
to rid ourselves of things.
They’ve taken the word “detox,”
the medical treatment for people
with drug and alcohol addictions,
and used it to apply to market cleanses.
They make it sound like pouring
liquid cleaner down plumbing,
getting rid of all the dirty stuff.
But the reason that sounds right to us
is it’s a rooted
in a lack of understanding
of how our liver works.
The liver is located
in our upper right abdomen.
It’s somewhere around half
the size of a football —
an American football —
and weighs three pounds.
It does many, many jobs
that keep our bodies running,
from assisting the immune system,
to creating proteins for blood clotting,
to sending out the cholesterol we need
to produce hormones.
The liver is also a key organ
for dealing with harmful substances.
You can think of it almost like a factory.
It takes nutrients from substances
that we consume,
food, drinks, medicines,
breaks them down
so they can either be packaged
in a way that’s usable —
like cholesterol
and protein, for instance —
or removed as waste
in the bile or via the kidneys,
usually in the form of urine.
Let’s look at what happens
when the liver encounters
some specific substances.
What about alcohol?
That’s a substance that’s fine
in smaller, moderate amounts
but becomes poisonous in excess.
When we drink, alcohol
passes through our liver,
and the liver breaks
it down in three steps.
First, enzymes convert
the alcohol to acetaldehyde,
a substance that can
damage cells over time.
But acetaldehyde
is quickly converted into acetate,
a much more stable intermediate,
before it breaks down
into carbon dioxide and water.
These are components our body can handle.
Now let’s look at a popular cleanse —
cayenne, pepper, lemon juice drink,
to help your liver flush toxins.
You drink it, it gets digested,
nutrients get absorbed
in the blood and arrive at the liver.
The liver processes these nutrients
the same way it processes everything else.
It packages whatever’s useful
that came from the lemon and the pepper
and disseminates it throughout the body.
Whatever it can’t use becomes waste.
There’s nothing particularly magical
about mixing cayenne and lemon.
Doing a cleanse doesn’t “clean the pipes,”
and it doesn’t make your liver
work any better or faster.
At best, you might lose
a few pounds on a cleanse,
because you aren’t eating much.
At worst, you could go
into starvation mode.
You could throw off
your electrolyte balance,
not to mention disrupt your intestinal
flora and bowel function.
Clearly, having a healthy liver
is extremely important.
The best things you can do: don’t smoke,
eat a balanced diet, exercise regularly
and get lots of sleep,
but there are some more
liver specific things to do.
Don’t consume too much alcohol,
as it can cause a variety
of problems over time,
from fatty liver disease
to cirrhosis of the liver,
to liver cancer.
Read the warning labels on medications
as some can damage your liver
when you don’t take them as directed.
You’ve probably heard about hepatitis,
which can be caused
by a viral infection of the liver
that can be very serious.
Get the vaccine for hepatitis B,
if you haven’t already.
And if you’re an adult who hasn’t been
screened for hepatitis C,
consider talking to your doctor
about testing options,
as too many people don’t
realize they have it.
Finally, be careful
with supplements and herbs,
particularly anything
marketed as bodybuilding
or a weight loss supplement,
as these are not nearly
as well-regulated as you would think.
20 percent of liver injury due to
medication in the United States
is actually caused
by these kinds of supplements.
So talk to your doctor
before you start them.
So many things
are sold to us as self-care,
and cleanses are no exception,
but I believe the best self-care
is just learning more about our bodies.
That way, we can tune out all the noise
and make informed decisions
on what we really need.

My personal experience says the opposite. I have used various cleanses and experienced very real, measurable and phenomenal results. It takes dedication and discipline to gain health on our planet due to all that we have destroyed and altered. If your solution is to never expose yourself to toxins then you will have to leave the planet to do so. Good luck with that.

The strange & severe headaches were bad (“proof it’s working”) but it was the only time in my life I lost complete control of my bowels in public. Talk to your doctor before doing anything. Stupidest comment ever. Do we generally have appointed doctors as we get born? What about doctors themselves? Who do they talk before taking supplements? With themselves? If they can do it, why we need doctors? Or Don’t you have a brain to think for yourself?

Except, of course, science has shown that fasting confers a whole host of health benefits. And by exercising, you detoxify via the cleansing of the lymphatic system, etc. Drinking more water can even be a ‘detox’ for people.
So we can and should detox in a few ways. Just not in a low-effort commercial package.

Detox is not medicine, nor magic. If you’re gonna do a detox just make sure you have a good diet, some exercise won’t hurt and sleep most importantly is effort less to do. I do detox everyday (lemon and Apple Cider Vinegar) because of a Chronic Skin disease that gets better without toxins. It ain’t always about liver.

“Alcohol is a substance that is fine in small or moderate amounts” Um, I don’t think so. Alcohol is cytotoxic and so are its processes. Alcohol can be medicinal for certain indications, not as a daily lubricant in “moderate amounts”. Small snippets of studies here and there on possible aid in prevention of X disease with small amount of alcohol intake has yet to be supported by large scale meta analyses. Until shown otherwise, no alcohol is better than any amount of alcohol, save for certain medical indications

Whenever an “expert” wants to trash the idea of doing a cleanse it seems they only ever mention the lemon juice one. I personally never tried it but I know people who did to lose a quick 10-15 lbs for an occasion. Beyoncé said in an interview that she did it for her role in Dream Girls.
I have, however, followed an anti-inflammatory diet which has been called a cleanse because you eliminate sugar, dairy, bread, alcohol and caffeine. It gives your liver and kidneys a break from the daily barrage of crap most people consume. The first few days were really tough but by day 4 I never felt better! My skin was glowing and my brain felt supercharged! I’m trying to motivate myself to do it again soon!

“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only begotten son, that whosoever believes in him shall not perish but have everlasting life.” -John 3:16(bible)
“the wages of sin is death”-Bible. Therefore God the judge has given man the death sentence due to man’s sin, but because of God’s mercy, he gave himself(god incarnate/jesus)to die on a cross for the sins of the world. That means he paid our fine and if we trust in him God can legally let us go guilt free in court/judgment day and have everlasting life with Him

I’ve done a liver cleanse before and I can say that… it changed my life and gave me the cure I was looking for so this video seems to be super misleading. I was able to cure my life long skin issues with herbs given by a naturopath and it was just a liver cleanse I did nothing else differently. I spent most of my life using creams doctors gave me because they told me I had a dry skin issue when it was much deeper than that literally. To this day even I’m using herbs (neem lead and oregano) to clear a fungus infection I got from traveling and it’s working. Natural health is not supported mainstream because it’s not profitable. In fact in some ways it seems natural health is villainized the same way they villainized cannabis until it became something that industries could profit from so now its good. Only when big industries find a way to make money off of natural healing will they start to do the appropriate studies to complete the full picture and add the missing facts and info this video didn’t

Well, something that has worked wonderfully for me is intermittent fasting, I once every 6 months go for 30 days at least of 18 to 23 hrs fasting, I start with 18 and slowly move to 23 hrs once reaching 23hrs I stay there for a couple of days and then start going back to 18 hrs, during that time I avoid any animals foods, no processed food, no oils, no sugars, no salt, what I gain is clear skin, more regular bowel movements at least twice a day, more energy, better focus on daily tasks and I save lots of money. I don’t believe that the digesting system removes any waste or harmful artifacts and science has no greater evidence to state that now recently there has been advances in microscope technology which can see the width of hydrogen when a Study comes from utilizing that technology about how the body breaks down food or substances ingested then I will think is better than listening to my own body.

From the consumer perspective, a “detox’ or “cleans” is marketed as a way to flush out toxins, which is understandable because most people don’t understand how this actually works, including the people pushing said “detox” and “cleans”, and apparently that also includes this doctor. So, here’s an actual biological breakdown of how “detoxes” and “cleanses” work.
They kinda work, just not in the way they are marketed, and they can be really hard on your liver and body, so be cautious.
First, we need to understand how the body “detoxes” in the first place. When this doctor mentioned that detoxing is the job of your liver, she’s not wrong but it’s also not entirely accurate nor the whole story.
All living things (including plants, fungi, and bacteria) have a set of genes that are specifically designed to produce a set of proteins called “Cytochrome P450 (CYPs) enzymes, that breakdown and metabolize “stuff”. We’ll focus on the ones mammals make because that’s what we’s humans are. 😊
The most basic explanation for CYP enzymes is that, in mammals, they are a large group of proteins that oxidize (breakdown) steroids, fatty acids, and xenobiotics (foreign chemicals not made by your body), and are important for the clearance of various compounds, as well as for hormone synthesis and breakdown. CYP enzymes are primarily made in your liver but you also makes them in every cell in your body, so your liver plays a crucial part in this.
So why is this important to know when we’re taking about “detoxing” and “cleansing”? Because the CYP pathway is what’s being “activated” or “triggered” when people are talking about something being good for “detoxing” or “cleansing”.
Here’s why.
When foreign toxins (xenobiotics) enter the body, your body creates a specific set of CPYs to metabolize them so you can get them out of your body as safely as possible. All foods, plants, and drugs trigger your body to make CYPs. Some foods, plants, and drugs trigger your body to make more CYPs than other foods, plants, and drugs do, and some can even inhibit (deactivate) certain CYP enzymes, rendering theses CYPs unable to breakdown anything, so your body must create new ones.
Grapefruit being a great example. Grapefruit inhibits a specific CYP enzyme (CYP3A4) which your body needs to metabolize many different drugs. Without this CYP enzyme or when it is inhibited, the body cannot get rid of the drug properly, which can lead to an accidental overdose. It’s like taking many times the recommended dosage. This is why it can be very dangerous to eat or drink anything that has real grapefruit in it when you’re taking certain drugs. In pharmacology this is called “Pharmacokinetics”.
Side note: I would suggest that everyone should learn more about drug food interactions before taking any medication(s).
Here’s where CYPs and detoxes/cleanses meet:
A lot of the same CYP enzyme are responsible for metabolizing many different chemicals. In fact, out of the 57 functional human CYPs, only about 12 enzymes are responsible for metabolizing most commonly used drugs and foreign substances (xenobiotics), and around 80% of all drugs in use today are metabolized by only 6 CYP enzymes (CYP3A4, CYP2D6, CYP2C9, CYP1A2, CYP2C8, and CYP2C19).
So why is this important regarding a “detox” or “cleanse”? Because CYP enzymes metabolize stuff without prejudice, meaning if there is something in your blood that a CYP enzyme can break down, then it will break it down. It’s as simple as that.
When you eat or drink something that is claimed to be “detoxing” or “cleansing”, what they actually mean is that this food/herb/whatever triggers your body to make a lot of certain CYP enzymes and these enzymes will not only break down the food/herb/whatever you ate or drank, but it will also break down any other substance in your blood that can be broken down by the same CYP enzymes that are triggered by the food/herb/whatever you ate or drank.
So do “detoxes” or “cleanses” work? Kinda. Are they hard on your body? Yes. Do they stress your Cytochrome P450 pathway? Absolutely! With this knowledge, would I ever suggest someone do a “detox” or “cleanse”? Well, that all depends on the person’s circumstances and health.
If it’s your average person wanting to do one because they think it will make them feel better or to lose weight, then no. There are much better and healthier options, like eating better, stress management, and exercise. But if it’s someone who is chronically sick and maybe their Cytochrome P450 pathway isn’t functioning properly and needs a food/herb to trigger their Cytochrome P450 pathway to help their body heal? Then yes, they might benefit from a detox or cleanse.
But for this doctor to blatantly say that detoxes and cleanses don’t work, clearly without knowing the mode of action and not having a full understanding of how the body detoxes itself, is just wrong. This is one of the biggest things wrong with allopathic medicine, and the health and nutrition sciences as a whole. Compartmentalization and proud individuals believing they have all the answers and know everything there is to know about the body and how it functions. They only treat the symptoms and rarely, if ever, treat the cause of the symptoms. Part of the problem is that it’s not very profitable to completely cure someone, and doctors and scientists are trained and funded by the same organizations who profit from not completely curing people.

You mention the danger of your body going Into starvation mode. What is your opinion on fasting, the various types. Is it good for you. If so how often, how long for, how long is too long? What about some who go all the way to One Meal a Day lifestyle?

It’s sad the amount of diet pills and “supplements” that are marketed to my generation by Instagram “influencers” like the Kardashians and others are literally causing cancer.

Detox is not meant to just clean the liver….it’s a form of food restrictions which science has proven as beneficial.

So sad that people believe this woman. We live in a toxic environment. Fasting is extremely helpful to cleanse the body. Most people love this video b/c they don’t have to go thru the emotional and physical withdrawals of cleansing. Injections actually create an auto immune response. This woman is just reading from a screen and has no personal detox experience. A sheep leading the rest of the sheep.
