I am a very lucid dreamer, all I remember is I was able to do this since I was a young boy. I have always wondered why I could do this and I have never had to tell myself to lucid dream, but the problem that I have is I remember controlling a situation in my dreams but I don’t remember what the dream was fully about😕

Lucid dreaming & sleep paralysis sound the exact same, in both you are aware you are dreaming but I wonder what makes sleep paralysis a terrifying experience?

If you want to lucid dream its simple. Right before nodding off to sleep, imagine any kind of world you want. Imagine any scenario. This is what helps you lucid dream. Not saying “I want to lucid dream”.

A trick I use for lucid dreaming: I make it a habit to ask myself if I’m dreaming during the day. I ask myself “Am I dreaming? How did I get here? What happened and hour ago? When did I wake up?”
Once this becomes habit, you’ll start doing it in dreams. Works for me.

I think it was the best wired video I’ve seen! I think my decision to go and study bio neurology just got “a bit” stronger 🙂
Always wanted to study alzheimer (my grandfather has it and the medication he gets doesn’t do it well enough, and at his age he’s probably not the only one).

Just tested the 90 min advice Dr. Iliff said, instead of the other random values (30, 45) I used. Instead of feeling miserable as usual, I woke up refreshed and had no trouble going to sleep later that night. Thank you very much Dr. Iliff and WIRED.

I hate lucid dreaming. I’ve done it more than several times and it causes me such anxiety. It’s like as soon as I realize I’m dreaming, instead of just enjoying being in control of the dream (which is why I think a lot of people would like to be able to lucid sleep), instead I start panicking in my dream, convinced I’ll never wake up. Because this causes me such anxiety in my dream, I immediately want to wake myself up so I begin to act wildly violent in my dream. I will be just sort of flailing all my limbs around or screaming uncontrollably because I think that those movements will somehow translate to my actual, physical body and wake me up.

It’s interesting on the note of Lucid Dreaming.
I’ve lucid dreamt a handful of times, all accidental. And every time I do (except once), I get really nervous and use it to wake myself up (by gasping), and then I get sleep paralysis briefly.

  34. Danielle Swafford

    March 4, 2022 at 3:58 pm

If you have sleep paralysis, I have some advice that has worked for me (if you would like it, cause it is very scary, I totally get it). First tip, sleep on your side, or stomach, if possible. I’ve never had a sleep paralysis episode occur unless I was asleep on my back. Second tip, if you do end up in sleep paralysis, instead of trying to scream or quickly jump up or move very rapidly (that’s totally normal especially if your sleep paralysis is scary) *but* it doesn’t help almost ever. instead, try to remain calm, tell yourself you know what’s happening and then just try to move your finger or wiggle a toe. It’s a lot more likely that you’ll be able to make that small movement mid-sleep, than something like scream or jump outta bed immediately. Once you just focus on moving a finger, then another… and so on, you’ll be able to pull yourself out of sleep slowly. Also, if you are taking drugs or drinking and noticing these are the nights you’re having sleep paralysis, you might wanna consider stopping or cutting back a lot.

About medications: herbal supplement valerian root seemed to be helpful to us when stress interfered with sleep patterns.
Possibly useful in a more benign way than prescribed sedatives though one must first check whether it interferes with any medications being taken.

That’s not how CPAP works. It creates “positive pressure” which pushes air INTO your nose/mouth, but it does NOT force air out. What he described here is a device that breathes for you like a ventilator, which is for when your lungs aren’t working – not for apnea.

I’ve yet to see any evidence that sleep paralysis is a real waking event, and not just a dream state. I say this as someone who has had what would be described as textbook “sleep paralysis” hundreds of times and they categorically were dreams.

  50. weksauce

    March 5, 2022 at 12:02 am

lol, confuses sleep debt with sleep pressure. sleep debt is missed sleep. sleep pressure is the buildup of waste products and hormones that make you want to sleep.

10:00 if you can’t sleep and have no clear indication why, try to find out if there are infrasound emissions in your neibourhood. These sometimes feel more like vibrations since they are detected in your spine and not always your ears.
I developed quite a bit of insonia and anxiety throught quarantine and had to talk to local authorities to have it stop. I am now taking melatone to regulate my sleep and am happy to say it is working.

  55. Jg235

    March 5, 2022 at 3:34 pm

Probably some brain problem, all the different areas of the brain are not in sync to wake up at the same time or in their normal waking up order, some remain asleep I gather, there’s a discoordination that’s why the reason must be an imbalance of some sort imo.

I just have to say that you can have sleep apnea and not snore or wake up gasping. I have severe sleep apnea to the point i basically never enter REM sleep, but I do not snore even a little. So, even if you dont have those symptoms yet feel exhausted all the time, it is still worth going to a doctor. I put this off for years bc i thought you HAD to have extreme snoring to have apnea. Not the case at all.

  69. jacqueline Naude

    March 5, 2022 at 8:59 pm

I have been a kind of insomniac for a while, more so as a teen. As an adult, I was diagnosed as narcoleptic, I feel I’m on the mild side though. I take naps as a symptom, but also as an aid. I became better in control of dreams once I kept a routine, and took a nap in the day began 60-90min. I would dream heavily some days, like movie worthy dreams, and have the ability to wake up once it got scary. Its not a continuous skill but I do feel I have to sacrifice being particularly awake, so I’m exhausted most days. I actually wish I could sleep without dreaming so I can rest properly.

It really makes you think hard about how we do high school. Get up at an ungodly hour, go to school to be fed a lot of facts that aren’t important or emotionally engaging to most of us, stay up late to finish homework, pull all-nighters to study or finish papers….

It’s basically one long string of all the WRONG things to do to enhance learning and build strong, healthy brains and bodies.

One time I had a dream whee I was in a dark room where there was kidd in Halloween costumes trying to grab me and then they started laughing. I woke up with sleep paralysis, unable to move for what felt like 5 minutes with the sound of children laughing that didn’t go away until I could move. That was the first time I ever had sleep paralysis. It was terrifying because I was fully conscious and trying to move even just the slightest bit wasn’t working

  87. Flower Dolphin

    March 6, 2022 at 5:32 pm

Sleep paralysis is the scariest thing ever. I’ll take any normal nightmare over sleep paralysis. Each time I’ve had sleep paralysis a silhouette has tried to suffocate me & I always wake up in intense fear catching my breath with an anxiety rush through my chest. Wild stuff. It feels like an eternity until I’m able to force myself awake.

  89. Leon M. Morris

    March 6, 2022 at 6:25 pm

It seems absurd that some people wake up to an alarm every day of their life. They’re living half lives and have ludicrous sleep debt, but have gotten themselves used to the feeling. I’d much rather live a life where I’m firing on all cylinders than dragging my way through with low brain function. Always seemed like a no brainer to get enough sleep and I still don’t understand why so many deprive themselves of something which is clearly so vital and beyond most of our comprehension. Every animal sleeps. It’s like 2/5ths of their lives. If good sleep was a small part of life why would we evolve to have it take up almost half?

Just skimmed all the way over sleep paralysis. Look, don’t leave out the largest part of what many many people through-out historic times have experienced. Not the feeling of pressure or suffocation. The feeling and experience of BEING attacked and BEING suffocated.

He said you hallucinate pain and stuff during sleep paralysis. Let me tell you about jinns. They’re creatures that we can’t see, you can google them for more info and proof of their existence. They especially like pranking humans, and actually, sleep paralysis is jinns messing with you. I had sleep paralysis once, when I was living in an area said to have many jinns (near forests). I could see them laughing at me while they “tied” me to the bed, I was scared to death. If you’ve ever had sleep paralysis and were in a lot of pain, don’t believe this guy gaslighting you to believing it’s all in your head, that pain was definitely real, and all that actually happened to you.

Sleep is so difficult for me. I’ve tried colder rooms, I’ve tried pretty much every otc medication there is turns out I’m a non-responder to diphenhydramine, which is the active ingredient in most of them. If I get to sleep on my own somehow I always wake up two to four hours later. It’s so annoying. Even with the prescription sedative I have now I can manage around 6-7 hours at most per night. White noise, melatonin, valerian root, basically anything I try works for at most a night or two and then it’s back to waking up after two hours of sleep. Then it takes me at least half an hour to get back to sleep and the cycle continues. I could literally take Nyquil right now and feel nothing, it’s bizarre. I’m trying to get a sleep study, but my insurance is being dumb about it. My mom has the same problem so I’m pretty sure there’s a genetic component, but I’ll have to wait and see.

I have experienced sleep paralysis many times in my life 10:46 , especially my teenage years. To make matters worse, my family went to one of those Holy-Roller, Bible-Thumping churches. Yes, would love to see him again explaining about sleep and brain activity. His little joke about brainwashing and cults was great! haha. Also, this happens to me all the time when I’m dreaming, I will have moments where I’m about to be lucid, but someone in my dream will convince me that what is happening is real and I’m not dreaming. So, I get very confused about what’s real and what’s not while I’m dreaming and even more confused when I wake up. Seems like I get reality confused with my dreams. Not sure if that is a thing or I’m just a messed up person. lol.

I had some pretty serious bouts of sleep paralysis about 10 years ago. Over a period of roughly 6 months it happened somewhere like 6-10 times. I don’t typically recall my dreams even a little so just added to how ridiculously terrifying it actually was. To the extent where I was genuinely concerned about going to sleep sometimes. Not fun stuff. It hasn’t happened at all since, thankfully. 0/10. I don’t recommend it :/

One thing that is not mentioned, as usual: keep your meal times consistent. This helps your body to stay in a rhythm. When you need to change rhythm start by eating one hour earlier, then go to bed one hour earlier. You will find it easier to fall a sleep as your bodily functions also are a bit early.

I’ve had sleep paralysis 3 times, and never again please. Someone bending over me while in bed, pinning me down, and kind of seeing it/realizing it happening. The last time it happened I slept with the light on for about 6 months, until I felt “safe” again to sleep without. In my case, extreme amounts of stress and depression is what seemed to have brought it on.

      1. If you are religious and being bothered by entities, they go away “in the name of Jesus”. Just say/think it, just like that.

      2. If you don’t have “entities”, but you just want it to stop, you can try the following:

      – Don’t sleep on your back.
      – Don’t eat before bed.
      – Don’t take intoxicants, including alcohol, nicotine and caffeine (or if you regularly do–then quit! It may make things temporarily worse, but you just need a re-adjustment period).
      – Limit light exposure after sunset, especially screens–also keep your bedroom dark or wear eyeshades.

I had sleep paralysis one time in my entire life. Saw a big, black spider at the foot of my bed, that shot up my body, toward my face. I leapt out of my bed, looked for the spider, and then went and slept on my couch when I couldn’t find it. Got back to sleep, woke up, turned on my TV and there was breaking news that an airplane had just crashed into the World Trade Center. Very strange night/morning.

I am so glad you made this video. I’ll be watching a video of some “expert” talking about the brain and they’ll say something like, “Deep sleep, you know, REM sleep.” Which is totally wrong! I’ve even seen it pop up in google searches as REM being your deepest sleep. I reported to google that they need to correct this and it seems they have. Anyway. Thank you so much! I think it’s important we are getting correct information when learning about our brain. And I’d like to stop having to defend myself when people adamantly insist that REM is deep sleep because “I learned it in school! I know what I’m talking about!” Thank you!

    March 11, 2022 at 11:50 am

How common are the following? Let me know if this happens in your dreams.

    1) When I’m dreaming, but it feels real, and something bad happens (like I wreck my car or kill someone), I say in my dream “this is just a dream. I’ll go to sleep and when I wake up, none of this will have happened”. Then in my dream, I go to sleep and in real life wake up.

    2) I’ll have a weird or vivid dream, but then in my dream I’ll wake up and tell someone about the dream I just had. Then I wake up in real life basically having experienced the same dream twice.

    3) If I fall asleep with the TV or radio on, at some point my brain is able to hear the TV or radio, but I’m still asleep. Then my dream is whatever I hear. Like one time a Billy Joel song came on (I hate Billy Joel and his songs). So my dream was me at a seaside hotel and the lobby was blasting the song. So I go downstairs and try to get the guy to turn down the song or change the station and he doesn’t. Meanwhile, the song is still playing in my head. I then break the radio and it keeps playing. Then I throw the broken radio into the ocean and scream because I can still hear it. Then when the song was over, I woke up. Or if I fell asleep and Judge Judy was on, my dream would be the story the people were telling, except there was no break in the dream for the commercials. Like I would make up the scene and who the characters were, but the dialog would be what the people in her court were saying.

    4) Some of my dreams have subtitles. Like if I had a dream set in the past, on the bottom it will say the date. Or will give a location.

    5) I once dreamt a whole original episode of Smallville. The main villain of the episode was someone of my own creation. But the other main characters were the real ones (and looked just like the real actors. Not one of these, he was Clark but didn’t look like Clark, but was.) There was the main story and the side story to. Of course, it was a season finale cliffhanger that said “To be continued” at the end. Of course, I never dreamt the conclusion episode. And at the point I had this dream, I hadn’t seen an episode of Smallville for months.

    6) I have a lot of dreams where there’s an elevator. Like that’s a main theme. But it always serves a purpose in the dream. It’s not me trapped in an elevator or anything. But I always “feel” it. Like I was in one of those high speed glass elevators on the outside of the building. It went up like 100 stories and I could feel it quickly going up and watched the cars and people get smaller and smaller.

    7) I use to have the craziest dreams when I would eat like 2 hamburgers and fries at 3 in the morning and then fall asleep immediately afterwards.

Ngl, these videos are, of course, great, but it always kind of bugs me that Wired so often picks completely rhetorical questions, asked ironically, to make these experts respond to. I’m sure they do it intentionally, for fun, but it still just seems awkward.

The guy just means he has trouble sleeping deeply, he’s not really asking what REM sleep is.

Idk if its something abt sleep, some type ofsleep paralysis or something but there was these 2 or 3 times where i felt someone “pushing” themselves onto my back(like if they were checking if i was sleep), i was still awake and thought it was my mom but it was going for way too long, so i rolled over and nobody was there, im pretty sure i felt breathing too, dont really believe in ghosts but maybe my house is just haunted lol

Edit: honestly thought this had something to do with the video but just realized it doesnt, like at all. I guess i just wanted to talk abt it

Does anyone know why if I’m falling asleep and someone talks to me, I feel like I’m answering them in real life and it feels so real and I think I’m talking back to them bit then when they yell out my name or something and I properly wake up I realise I haven’t been talking back to them. It’s so so creepy and weird!!!

So long term lack of sleep messes up the body and the brain doesn’t recover, sad to know when you have a disabled child an you don’t get a good night’s sleep for decades or if your a new parent and spend weeks/ months on almost no sleep etc etc, it’s like there isn’t anything you can do but know your stuffed

15:46 – there are also sleep apps that measure based upon the soundwaves you emit what stages of sleep you are in – When you are in the the different stages of sleep, REM, N1, N2, N3, your body emits different frequencies and an app using your smartphone mic can pick up those frequencies. It isn’t as accurate as a proper EEG / sleep study, but it gives you a very good rough idea. These apps are getting better and better with time (and more data). And of course, the paid-for apps are better.

I once closed my eyes for like a second, then i got sleep paralyzed. I forced myself to wake up (because it’s not the first time i got sleep paralyzed, im familiar with it). Then i closed my eyes again trying to sleep but instantly got paralyzed again. This happened for like 4 times until i could finally fall asleep peacefully. Is this normal?

I used to be able to lucid dream! My best tip is to get in the habit of checking if you’re awake. I used to bite my cheek during the day to see if I felt anything, if I did then I was awake. I got in the habit and started doing it while dreaming, and when I didn’t feel anything, I knew I was dreaming.

2)How can we incorporate a polyphasic sleep Schedule?

anyone know why i would have reoccuring dreams? all different scenerios, im not always the main character. i have 7-10 completely different dreams that i keep dreaming since i was maybe 10 years old. i am 18 now, and these dreams arent going away. i have 1 of these 10 different reoccuring dreams once or twice or so a year. some small details change and some people that play key roles are different but it is always the same setting and same plot of the dream, and they always end the same way at the same scene. ex – i wake up as soon as i open a specific door, when i have that reoccuring dream in the next yr or 2, i always wake up when i open that specific door. any thoughts anyone?

My tip on sleep paralysis is that I learned how to “move”. Don’t physically try to move, kind of like mentally will it or imagine it. It worked for me but I used that to twitch myself awake. You can’t actually move but it’s helped me for years.

I lived with sleep paralysis my whole life and suffocating was the thing I experienced the most. I would ask my parents to wake me at times during naps because the only thing you want in that moment is to wake up. It was honestly more irritating than anything and I was able to stay calm and practice breathing because I knew I always woke up so I just had to stay calm. It only lessened and at this moment is super rare because of the medication I’m on

It’s so good to see sleep paralysis brought up in such a big and public facing manner.

Anytime I mention it to friends or family, how bad it is, how terrifying and panic inducing, how the “hallucinations” aren’t just dreams, that every part of your mind believes completely that you are awake in real life, to the point that there’s hardly a difference, I just get a lot of raised eyebrows and facial expressions that suggest I’m some extreme sort of crazy, followed by a laugh coz it’s weird sounding. I wouldn’t wish the sleep paralysis on anyone. I’d like to try more to lucid dream, but it’s horrifying to think that I might inadvertently increase my minds ability to slip into SP.

Hopefully more people become aware through more public discourse. I’d never heard of SP until it got so bad I looked up what was happening, thinking it was the onset of some sort of severe diagnosis.

Sometimes insomnia is caused by things other than what Dr. Iliff referenced. I had a PTSD incident 22 years ago and haven’t been able to sleep naturally at all since then. My central nervous system was affected. I have to use sleep meds to sleep every night. I know this is rare, but I do wish sleep experts would stop assuming that insomniacs just need to practice good sleep hygiene, get exercise, meditate, turn off the computer, etc. etc. etc. I’m sure this helps some, but it doesn’t help us all.

About lucid dreaming, I’ve had this experience a few times. It usually happens when I am close to awake, though I cannot say how close. Once I realize I am dreaming, I can kinda control the dream in ways I am not able otherwise. The first time it happened, my dream was this big guy chasing me over old buildings; normally I would just freeze, die and awake, but this time, for whatever reason, I realized I was dreaming, so I jumped through a window, closed it on his hand, took his knife and stabbed him. It was a great experience. The second one I had a lot less control over the dream, I knew I was dreaming, but there was nothing I could do but to watch the dream happen. Pretty rare thing to happen and easy to be confused to a half awaken state.

What happens if you tell the people in your dreams that you’re aware that you’re in a dream? I’ve heard that the dream turns a bit dark afterwards, however, I’ve never done it myself 😬

What I notice about lucid dreams, there are just different dreams. Some dreams, in my opinion, can be “controlled” or the person can navigate where they are headed or interact in the dream. There are some dreams that play like an unskippable ad. Other dreams play like an interactive videogame and some parts are the cinematic events you cannot skip and must watch to get a gist of the story.

    March 18, 2022 at 2:19 pm

The closest thing about “cognitive tricks” about sleep and dreams, is you can achieve to wake up at a certain time and the body somehow wakes you up at that time. Sometimes the dream cuts off like the movie abruptly ends and I wake up. Getting out the bed is another issue.

I have sleep paralysis with lucid dreams it usually happens when I’m really tired and falling asleep and I know it’s about to happen because I feel a sensation in my head and I can control what’s happening however my dreams start to make me feel dizzy and a begin thinking it’s real life as I can feel everything but I wake up normal it’s so confusing

I’ve been experiencing sleep paralysis since childhood and I’m graduating college now. I even had it while sleeping in a sitting position 😩 I managed how to get rid of the scary figures by closing my eyes while on a sleep paralysis and focus on how to break through it. I just don’t like the feeling that someone is touching me, whispering something to my ear and waking up super tired. Most friends say they want to experience it but I won’t recommend, it is always a terrifying experience.

After my extensive sleep study they told me my chronic fatigue was because I don’t get deep sleep. My cycles average 10-13 a night vs the norm of 5-7. He said it’s a form of narcolepsy and the reason I consistently struggle with sleep paralysis. Anyone else? Lol

Thankfully the only sleep paralysis experience I had was just laying there, feeling awake yet not being able to move, but without any intense feelings of pressure or panic. It used to happen sometimes when I was a child, not very scary, just kind of annoying. I would always know that I’m not fully awake yet and just wait for it to pass or try to fall back asleep. I feel so lucky that I didn’t experience any of the other stuff, like hallucinations, I can’t imagine how terrifying that must be.

So for lucid dream techniques, the one that worked for me (not that I was aiming to become a lucid dreamer) was as he mentioned.
You probably have to be the sort that can remember your dreams, also someone that doesn’t sleep deeply (for me)
I would wake a few times during my sleep and remember the dream and if it was a particularly good one, really think about entering it again.
I dreamed a lot about flying slightly, or jumping really high when I was a teen. Not sure why but it was fun of course!
So after many years of doing this without actually realising I was almost training myself to remember these dreams really strongly, I started to realise when I was in them.
I can tell you now, when you can lucid dream about being able to fly/jump around like a superhero it is insanely fun…though it does make sleep a much larger priority than it should be and to be honest I am not sure if it was healthy for me.
It made me take more naps, my sleep cycle got out of whack etc.
Though it is a great experience, I’ve had some absolutely insane experiences with space for example in a lucid dream.

“during rem sleep, whats happening is your brain is working to consolidate the memories that form through the course of the day”
    This explains a lot.

    2) I have a 💩 memory

When people ask about sleep apnea treatment, I sometimes hear “How can you possibly sleep with that thing?” My response: “I can’t possibly sleep _without_ it.” My OSA diagnosis changed my life considerably and I’m no longer as utterly and unbelievably tired as I was.

Why do I sleep drive. Like woke up in another city 2 hours away. My grandma mom both did it as well. No no drugs or alcohol involved. Only happened twice for me both times I was extremely tired and stressed out. I sold my vehicle and either take a cab, city buses, or walk now. I am too worried I will hurt others and or myself if I have access to keys and vehicle. If I have overnight company I have them hide their keys before going to sleep just to be safe.

On the subject of lucid dreaming, I noticed in my dreams i lost object permanence. I realized this in middle/highschool when I started doing a trick where id look up at an analog clock, watch the second hand for a few seconds, look away for a couple seconds and look back. if it were a dream the second hand would be where it was when i looked away and if it wasn’t a dream, obviously, it would have kept moving, the information would have continued to develop outside my awareness, if that makes sense
