Apple says don’t use a webcam cover and we agree: Here’s why

Apple recently released a report urging users to stop closing their MacBook, MacBook Air, or MacBook Pro with a cover over the camera because it might damage the laptop’s screen. But what if you’re worried about hackers spying on you through your laptops camera? Is there anything to be worried about?

If they’ve wired up the camera and the LED properly (in series), the LED should always come on when the camera is on. Of course, that assumes you trust the manufacturer to have wired them up properly or that someone hasn’t been able to tamper with your hardware.

Question is what is worth more to you and or your company, not the manufacturer so much, especially if they don’t design it any different.

Don’t buy an apple. My laptop screen is invulnerable. Stop showing off how much $ you wasted on a laptop.

Macs build after 2008 are no longer susceptible to being hacked. The light is triggered by hardware signals from the camera. The only issue you have to worry about is quick pictures, since the light only turns on briefly. At the end of the day, even going as far as snapping pictures remotely without permission is tedious and probably not worth it, since you could probably do worse at that point.

Apples argument is basically we made some poor design decisions that prevent our users from making the choice to cover their webcams without damaging their computers. A good laptop design would include a hardware switch to turn off mic and webcam when desired with no way for software/firmware to turn it back on.

Last time I checked, Dan Ackerman, low buck Austin Powers, wasn’t a security expert. He’s not exactly the person people should be flocking to for information on webcam hacking.

I only trust ME… as for the mic welp, have fun listening I guess that’s gonna be a lot of static to listen to. Or I guess I hope you like the content of what I watch. lol… Should mention no need to cover my cam on my Huawei matebook pro x.

I don’t use an Apple Laptop. I use the Huawei Matebook that has the camera in the keyboard. So it slides down.

No don’t use one. If one makes an effort to keep themselves safe while on their home WiFi network, there’s less to worry about.

    July 28, 2020 at 9:29 am

The answer is that Apple should design an ‘analogue’ cover into the whole thing.

Everything fine until there a major bug that’s allow people to access camera. I don’t understand why people not take preventive action even if I understand hack on camera usually is targeted attack. I mean even if you know it’s easy to break door in any house you still install door with lock isn’t? IMO advice people to not do preventive action is not really good advice. Sorry for bad English 💁🏻‍♀️

Then apple should redesign the laptops and include a webcam slider to cover it up.

    July 28, 2020 at 1:29 pm

sorry if i dont trust well, but in todays day and age people are paranoid and have been about it for ages and apple knows this so why not just make the camera with an inbult slider

What Apple should do is build in a webcam cover instead of being cheap. They know this is a problem so they should provide a solution like other companies like Lenovo and HP

If you know anything about laptops, please read this! I need as much help as possible. Thank you.

As a university student, I need a laptop with a long battery life that is compatible with multiple programs such as RPNow, LockDown Browser, Adobe, and Microsoft. I also need it to have a microphone, front-face camera, blue-tooth, and light up key-board. That has a good amount of storage that will not freeze or slow down in the middle of an exam. I also want this laptop to last me for many years. At least a minimum of five years. What laptop do you all recommend? I had an HP that died within 3 hours and was slow. I only had it for a year or so. Then it stopped working. I now have a Samsung Chromebook, but I can’t download the programs I need. I was thinking about purchasing an Apple Macbook Air 13′. Most students use it, but I m not sure if it is worth it. I am not trying to spend too much because I do have other school-related expenses. However, I also want a computer that is reliable, durable, and worth its price.

As a side note, are two-in-one laptops a good option?
    Thanks for your help! 🙂
