7:40 i’m surprised he didn’t point out. The fact that diesel pumps have a wider nozzle than regular gas and it won’t even fit in your gas hole. (Huh huh huh gas hole) So it’s very difficult to physically pump diesel gas in a regular gasoline vehicle.

You’d be shocked to learn how stupid some people are lol.
Just because it doesn’t fit won’t mean they won’t just hold it….
@Ullus
October 6, 2026 at 6:37 pm
With modern direct-inject diesel engines it shouldn’t be such a catastrophic mistake to fill in gasoline: because fuel is injected just at the point, when combustion is desired, it should not matter that much that gasoline ignites much easier than diesel. To be honest I’ve got no practical experience in the matter, but in theory it should not matter with a direct inject engine (in this case its probably even worse the other way round: because diesel has a higher viscosity and direct inject valves are extremely narrow the diesel might clog a gasoline injector…)

on reliability of new vs old cars, i think we perfected reliability in the mid 2000’s. lately, i’m seeing a lot of failed headgaskets across different makes and models. the smaller engines are made of thinner castings and they are not as robust. car manufacturers are pressured by the EPA to get lower emissions. that has become their new focus instead of reliability.

One of the best things I’ve ever bought was an air compressor that plugs into a cigarette lighter and reads tire pressure. I think it was like $40. When the tire pressure light comes on, I just bust it out and top up all my tires and I’m ready to go

listening to the long list of fluid changes makes me glad i bought an EV. no transmission, no engine, breaks last for EVER cause you rarely use them, tires last 60k+ miles, handles better, is safer, and catches fire less than gas cars.

12:04 this is so funny to me. One time a customer drove into the service drive and I just happened to be there when my advisor was checking it in. He said “Yeah i think my exhaust fell off.” Car sounded quiet at first. I asked him to rev it a bit and heard an intake leak. Popped the hood and the airbox was not secured. Another tip for finding a good mechanic is ask your mailman or local rental car place. As a mailman we deliver to literally everyone, every day, we know who’s got good reputations, who’s busy and who’s not. We can see if the mechanic has had the same 8 cars for 10 years just wasting away or are they constantly turning cars over and repairing them. Postal Vehicles and Fleet vehicles also need LOTS of maintenance and the government and corporations don’t want to waste time or money. They will only use very specific mechanics.

I rented a UHaul once. It was diesel. The guy told me several times……not to forget to put diesel in it. I go out, try to start it and it would not start. I went in and told the guy and they swapped out the truck for a different one. The second one was not diesel though but nobody told me. So, when it came time to return it and put gas into it I put in diesel and when I drove away it was like there were nuts and bolts in the cylinders. They tried to blame me at UHaul but once I explained the situation they had to eat it.

Regarding gasoline in the USA: Never buy an octane rating higher than the specification; instead, save that money and spend it on filling up at a Top Tier+ gas station. That actually IS better for your engine and WILL make a difference.

When I was much younger I tried not rotating my tires on my front wheel drive Honda CRX. I thought the rear tires would last a long time and I would just buy new front tires when the effects of cornering and acceleration would wear them out. Big mistake. After awhile the rear tires starting making a “whomp-whomp-whomp” sound that was really bad. Why? Because most of the weight is on the front wheels, since the engine is located there, it keeps the front tires planted on the ground. Meanwhile, the rear wheels are not bouncing, but they kind of alternate between being planted and skimming along the pavement and therefore wear funny, which eventually will make the noise I heard. And if you are late in your rotation and that noise shows up, there is nothing you can do about it but buy new tires.

well, I kind of agree with him about modern cars being better. The problem is all those sensors and electronic gizmo’s can total a car at a certain point even though the engine and everything else is fine. That’s the advantage of older cars in particular 2000s cars are a good choice because they don’t have all that crap in them. We should be able to buy a car without a bunch of electronic crap that needs to be a law. Also speech to text.

I had a 2007 Chevy HHR that I drove 1600 miles with a cracked block. The fuel line was also leaking above the rear wheel wheel. I traded it in, in 2018, 195,000 miles, block still cracked, sun roof leaked (water on passenger side floor) and I only had one wiper working. All the mechanics came out of the dealership and popped the hood shaking their heads for like 15 minutes. Couldn’t believe I drove it in. Traded in for another Chevy.

Lots of good advice here, but a couple of things I’d clarify:
Not every turbocharged vehicle requires 91 octane. Check your owner’s manual and distinguish between “required” and “recommended.” Some say 87 minimum and 91 recommended, meaning they can run on 87, with the engine management adjusting timing as needed. You may give up some performance, but premium isn’t mandatory. Plenty of smaller turbo engines are designed for regular fuel; displacement alone doesn’t determine the requirement.
On oil changes, I’d personally choose full synthetic that meets the manufacturer’s specifications. The price difference usually isn’t enough for me to justify conventional oil.
My preference for long-term ownership is around 5,000 miles between changes, or sooner if the manual’s time limit or severe-service schedule calls for it. Short trips, lots of idling, and demanding driving conditions matter just as much as mileage.
Some manufacturers allow 7,500–10,000 miles. I wouldn’t automatically call those intervals wrong or claim they’re only intended to get an engine through its warranty. But I’m comfortable taking a more conservative approach when I want to keep a car for years. Going slightly past 5,000 isn’t automatically damaging, either.
I also agree with the transmission-fluid point: follow the correct service procedure and fluid specifications, and understand what the maintenance schedule calls for. Regular inspections help catch leaks, cooling-system issues, and worn components before they become expensive problems.
Maintenance can’t eliminate a design defect, and there are certainly problem engines and transmissions across brands. But if you already own a late-2010s car that’s been maintained well and is treating you well, keeping that maintenance going can give you a lot more useful life out of it.
Lastly as for reliability the past 5 to 6 years reliability has dropped significantly this is due to covid causing quality control to go into the toilet. So yes older cars are more reliable but we’re talking like mid-2010s compared to 2020 not 80s 90s or even early 2000d.
@EricN73158

I like to change my oil in November so that I don’t need to during winter. Then in March/April I like to change it again. Then June/July I like to do it one more time.
If you think you only need to do it 2 times a year because you drive less then November to May is a good split.

Where do you get an engine replacement? I have a car that isnt old and only had 135k miles. It lived just long enough to get my husband through cancer and its very sentimental. I really want it fixed. Not to mention having spent 20k to pay it off.

my 2021 Mercedes doesn’t have active tire pressure monitoring even though my 2015 Chrysler did. It’s a travesty. Mercedes did put in some kind of computer algorithm that will detect if one of the tires is spinning out of sync with the rest and will alert me about a possible flat but it won’t tell you which one. I literally ride around with one of those powered automatic air compressors that you can set to a specific psi and it will pump your tire up. Luxury is not always better

A good “lemon” test. Is to really drive it for the test drive. At least 20 miles, get on the highway, get it up to speed. Take some surface streets, lots of stops and go. Then, when you get back to the dealership DO NOT turn it off. Let it run while you talk to the dealer. Dont let them turn it off. Let it run for a good five minutes. Then look at the ground after it is moved. Also, at the premium gas bit. I had a 2006 ford focus. Loved that car, I put premium in and did the math. I got 60 more miles per tank than with regular. Premium also has fewer particulates than regular. Never had any issues with the engine and it ran like a dream for well over a decade.
Only slight mechanical issues, easily fixed, until she was stolen 🙁

One really basic test I’ve done to find out if a shop is competent and ethical: take a working car, and make sure all the tires are at the right pressure, then bleed off about 30% of the pressure in one of the front tires, bring your car in to the shop and tell them it feels like it is pulling a little to one side, and ask if you need an alignment done. A scam shop will take the bait, but a good shop won’t. Don’t drive too long like this, as the under-inflated tire will eventually wear unevenly or fail at high speeds.

October 12, 2026 at 6:43 pm
You car’s engine DOES NOT run on explosions. It burns gas, it does not explode it. That’s why the “knock” is also called “detonation”, which is another word for “explosion”. Your car runs on “conflagration”, another word for “burning”. Premium gas is not really higher quality, it just resists detonation at higher compression. If your car calls for “premium” gas, you should use it, if it doesn’t there’s ZERO reason to use higher octane gas. Putting lower octane gas in a modern car probably won’t damage the engine: it should detect it and reduce power pretty quickly, but it’s probably not a good idea, just use what’s recommended.

I’m not a fan of “change oil at x miles”, your car probably sits idling more time than it spends moving in high-traffic areas, the engine runs but that’s a lot less miles than if you’re driving on the highway for the same amount of time. I just change the oil and the filters every six months, no matter of mileage.

Although I do love classic vehicles, the truth is there are a lot more cars today that go over 3 to 4 hundred thousand miles than ever before. In fact, we used to only use 5 digits on the odometer because once a vehicle got to 1 or 2 hundred thousand miles, they were pretty much done and ready for the scrap yard. Advancement in technologies and materials have allowed vehicles to routinely last several hundred thousand miles.

My first car sales job (1999) was at a small Lincoln-Mercury/Subaru dealership. There was a customer who would bring his early 80s Subaru BRAT in every single month for a routine maintenance once over. The thing had over 400,000 miles and it was hilariously, immaculately spotless. Like… we had brand new cars that were not as clean and tight as he kept this thing. I’m convinced that thing was immortal.

Just last August I was on a camping trip in Nevada with my 2016 4Runner. I pulled up to the solitary gas pump at a tiny place in the middle of nowhere and started to pump gas into the tank. Suddenly I noticed the sign clearly said “Diesel”. This station actually had two pumps and I was at the wrong one! Fortunately I had only put in 1.5 gallons of diesel into a 22-gallon tank. A mechanic told me that as long as I filled the rest of it with gas, it would dilute the diesel enough to not cause problems. So far, he’s been right.

When buying a used car, always ask to take a look under it and always ask to pop the hood and review the engine. Take off the oil cap: if the inside is cracked or gross looking (aka doesn’t look like a normal used oil cap), something is very wrong with the car so don’t buy it.

how to make your car last forever? Don’t drive it like it’s a race car. As for older cars, there are models that go 2-3-400,000 miles. For a non-mechanic the new stuff can be better, but fixing an old car yourself is WAY easier ( a lot of times cheaper) than this new junk.

One note: The Top Tier label on a gas pump is important. It’s an industry label that says that gas has the necessary detergents to meet the certification. You want this. Some companies, like Chevron, might go further, but some don’t to this at all. Over time, not having those detergents can cause build up on your valves and some very expensive repairs. Don’t just go by a big name. Look for that label.

I love your channel, but I have to say that I disagree with one thing — I do prefill the oil filter. I dont worry about it being totally full and its not about the filter being empty….. dry media resists flow and personally I want to at least wet the material so it flows as intended. Does it matter, I dont know — but it makes me feel better and my vehicles all live well over 200k miles (and arent retired due to engine issues generally) so I do it.

Minimum octane where I live is 95 and you can get 97,98 or even 99 in some petrol stations.

21:46 and he means QUARTER TURN. DO NOT use a drill or air compressor. ALWAYS hand tighten it, THAT’S IT. As an owner of a 2010 Camry and husband of an owner of a 2012 Camry, we both got screwed by this. Not only are the plastic filter housings garbage, they’re a nightmare to remove. And thanks to Valvoline doing my wife’s oil change two changes ago and using an air compressor to tighten the oil filter housing, it took two weeks to get the stupid thing off. So yeah, hand tighten only. For the love of all that is good, HAND TIGHTEN ONLY.

Would’ve liked to hear that why some japanese cars simply last way longer than others in every mean. Not just the engine but in every matter but perhaps rust.

My plug-in hybrid has 107k miles and is still on the first set of brake pads, which are still good according to the mechanic. Brakes can last forever on an EV. But, as Jared pointed out, the problem can be lack of use. You should brake hard every now and then to make sure they don’t get rusty.

I clicked on this video (baited) to know WHAT happens if you pour diesel into a petrol car. Expecting a breakdown how a car engine works and where it would fail. NOT an answer to “oops what should I do know I’m so clumsy lol”
Enjoy the engagement buddy :/

old cars don’t have top’s and bottoms that deconstruct when the timing belt comes loose….
So I know you are mostly correct, but at the same time, most old cars are VASTLY more reliable, and nearly 10,000% more rebuildable, than newer cars…
new cars CANNOT be repaired once they stop producing parts, some of these parts CANNOT be reproduced, as they are PROPRIETARY, and we are already running into permanently destroyed cars, due to the various computers, they no longer make.
once the salvage cars are no longer available, the cars are dead dead.
Love the video, just didn’t really like that specific segment, as it didn’t have the hour long expansion on the right to repair issues plaguing todays vehicles.

The fuel question is neat because newer turbo-standard cars are built around 87 octane, like the Chevy crossovers

You lost me on your take about newer vs older cars and reliability.
You talked about 30 sensors going in a symphony to make the car run better. Thing is, when sensors goes out (like all the time), it screws up everything else, thereby, making it less reliable. You lose any kind of power to the computer and your car stops running instead of just running off the alternator like it’s supposed to. They have so much stuff in there that there’s even a second battery.
Longer car life ≠ reliability.

Diesel in gas is way worse than opposite. Even gas station diesel pump has bigger diameter nozzle than gas so you can put gas in to diesel tank but not the way arround. diesel has lower egnition tem than gas so gas in diesel if engine is hot will run fine but weaker – done it myself, but it will not idle – it dies and can’t start. Diesel in gas runs hot imidietly and starts backfiring pretty much instantly – at lest in korean cars.
