typical Google products, half baked (at best) and no 2nd level thinking. Why would you want to call 911 from Google app when you’re holding a real phone that can make real calls.

Assuming the new cams work the same as previous Nest Cams, he needs to press the microphone button a second time to start broadcasting. This creates a little lag, sure, but it’s not the same as the feature not working.

    • David Priest

      November 6, 2021 at 1:00 pm

They actually don’t work the same way. You can see it working exactly as it’s supposed to in the dog test, when a single press starts the two-way talk.

How does the overall image quality compare to the previous nest cam indoor (not the IQ line)? The specs seem to be a downgrade, but I wonder if HDR makes up for it?

    • David Priest

      November 6, 2021 at 12:32 pm

This is anecdotal, since I haven’t worked with the old Nest cams in a few years, but the image quality was pretty sharp as I used it, despite seeming to be a downgrade. Basically, I thought it looked very good.

Great review, would love to see you test Ring Alarm Pro and more specifically, the new Ring Edge feature for local processing and local storage. Amazon made a big deal out of this at their event, and seeing how Google is marketing on device processing, I’m wondering how Ring fares in comparison. (Oddly enough, a lot of Rings devices won’t be compatible like their doorbell 4, floodlight cam, etc)

You were muting 2 way audio when starting the live stream, the app was clearly flashing at you to un-mute. It must come on automatically.

    • David Priest

      November 6, 2021 at 12:30 pm

I know it looks like that, but that’s not the case. I thought the same thing at first, too, but the button is flashing to show that you’re actively talking, and the crossed out mic is there to say you can press it to mute. It’s weird, I know. But I tested it well over twenty times.

    • Michael Mavel

      November 6, 2021 at 8:29 pm

@David Priest Yea thats odd. Maybe the app didn’t have Microphone permissions, and was for some reason not prompting for it.. shrug, who knows.

Well the problem with google is that it use your data. The camera needs a PIR

I used to own 15 or 17 I can’t remember nest cameras in my house indoor and outdoor. This was 2 years ago I got rid of every single one of them sold them on eBay recouped a lot of my money thank God. They were the worst pieces of junk in the world. The quality was nowhere near 1080p and forget about the 4K versions. The video would go out to the cloud and then come back to you and when it did so it would come back at maybe 600p definitely not 720P and hell to the f****** no it was not 1080p stay away from nest or Google cameras until they get there straight

I think some of the new brands of cameras are better than Nest Cameras and cheaper. The are more expensive and don’t do anything better.

For 100$ I can get a camera with 6x the pixels per second. The only appeal is Google integration and it’s not really fully integrated with Google home.

I don’t wanna talk to a theif from the device. They would smash the cam anyway. It must be secretly recorded, so high resolution matters more to identify who it was.

Just got the Google nest indoor camera and it’s missing out on recording and sending alerts which I don’t even get the alert in few times. That
    worries me..

Great review. I already purchased the cameras since I was already in the Google ecosystem. So far I haven’t had any issues with them and no I don’t pay for Nest Aware. My biggest positive note about this camera has been when my daughters hamster escaped her cage and was running around the house in the middle of the night. I was able to use the cameras and notifications to get alerts when it saw it running around the floor and I was able to catch it thankfully.
