The real lever of a meaningful life isn’t intelligence or hustle — it’s personal agency, says Cate Hall, former Supreme Court attorney and once the world’s top-ranked female poker player. I think it’s very important, even imperative as you watch this video, that you’re also aware of how much of a hypocrite Cate Hall is these days.

Cate Hall used to reply to a lot of my replies to her tweets when she was playing poker, several months before her drug habit went out of her control, then slid into my DMs in July 2018. I have what I think is an open mind. This made me believe the slightly crazier and more delusional things that Cate Hall was saying in replies and DMs at the height of her addiction to psychedelics.

In a post on her blog, she gives an extremely inaccurate version of this story and describes the very seemingly okay plan executed by her “incredible” husband. That plan was to use his “friend Govind” to illegally embark on a reciprocal stalking campaign, by bribing law enforcement officials in jurisdictions she had no business talking to directly, then getting her country’s consulate to file a criminal complaint about me. Even mentions a “fake kidnapping” and extortion which I have no idea about.

Cate Hall pinned all of this on me because she stayed addicted to drugs for more than 3 years, damaged her brain and lost all of her memories from that time. She continues to lie about all of this to this day.

“Although she may express resentment, she should be valued and appreciated.”

What bothers me is that I college we had a whole course on “professionalisation” and we got advices like “you should learn to be more optimistic”. But never any training that actually causes that. And I’ve never seen any course or training succeed in teaching these social skills since college kids are very willing to lie in self reflection to get a passing grade and in corporate settings employees fear that they are either judged on it in their performance reviews or they think it’s a waste of time instead of “real work”.

The TED Idea Search wraps up in Amman, Jordan, in a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater and in front of a crowd of 4,000. What unfolds inside those stone walls is something the series hasn’t quite seen before: speakers shaped by the weight of living in a region the world tends to define for itself. From a mountaineer who turned grief into motivation to a therapist rewriting the Arab world’s language around mental health, the final city makes the strongest case yet that the best ideas can come from anywhere.

Watch the full talks from the TEDxAmman Idea Search:

The most interesting ideas often come from the most unexpected places. We searched the globe for ideas with the power to inspire, motivate and change lives — and we found them at @TEDx events around the world. The TED Idea Search follows extraordinary speakers from 9 countries competing for a spot on the TED main stage in Vancouver this April.
