Former FBI agent and body language expert Joe Navarro sits down with WIRED to talk about the non-verbal language of appearance. The ornate nature of how we attend to our bodies has grand significance throughout humankind. The way we present ourselves, across cultures, continues to be of massive importance. But, just how important is appearance to things like success, money and power?

The same things and body language that makes an alpha in the animal world applies to us. No surprise, since we’re also animals.

In meetings, lift your chair up, broaden your shoulders, have your arms open to who you’re talking to, speak with confidence, make eye contact etc.

His comments regarding wearing a suit: I’ve dated men who have grown up in a variety of countries. When I mention to an American man that I’m fond of neckties, the vast majority of men tell me they: don’t know how to tie one, never have owned one, would never wear one. The vast majority of men that I’ve dated who grew up in other countries (Canada, Wales, England, Sweden, Corsica) tell me that not only did they learn how to tie a necktie as a child, but they own one or two (or dozens) just in case they need to dress up. Now, I didn’t ask any man to wear a necktie. But many American men just find the idea of a necktie to be horrifying, while many foreign men do not.

  13. Jan Martens

    August 3, 2022 at 9:02 pm

Find it a little strange, a man who talks about attire, wearing a suit and talks about it is wearing his suit very sloppy. For instance, who sits down and button up his jacket?? Wear a big golden watch and an shirt which doesn’t cover it? Let’s says that Americans have another standard than the European people. In the Netherlands clothing is one of the least things you have to worry about. Here it is all in intelligence, knowledge, assessment’s and for all: confidence and control.

Also, beauty never can be bypassed with attire or whatever. Women knows that better than anyone. Ask them. They are really good in what’s beautiful and what’s not. Definitely NOT a symmetrical face which the scientist seems to believe. They always take that to make an educated appearance, like the man is this video. But it is truly nonsense. People ALWAYS look out for the safest bet for a good and safe environment to keep their gene’s strong. That’s why Big man are a little bit more attractive than smaller man.

But is it good to talk about, and to know why some people are more successful just by the way they look and appear.

I subscribe to that! Modesty and humbleness are so underrated these days. We have so many speakers who are sassy or glib or foul-mouthed. As for the power of looks, I like the «consistency is key» idea but even more than that a thing that hasn’t been mentioned in this video – balance. I like when the appearance doesn’t belie a person’s true self and the physical beauty is kept in proportion to their virtues. I don’t give a hoot about gorgeous actresses or CEOs with exceptional abilities. I’d rather see ordinary people be neat and decent. That is my dream.

I do not know about the height dividend because that can partially be answered by parent income and thus diet. But, I mean – overall, we can also say the way one dress is also linked to one socio-economic class and we also have pretty good understand of upward mobility in different countries.

In fact, the way you dress is a indeed a class mechanics that gives message to others who is in and who is not in a group.

That being said, I do think that better looking folks, and those with above average height probably do better than those who are not…

Don’t take this guy too seriously. This video is fairly harmless, but he passes off a lot of generalizations as gospel. He didn’t invent any of the stuff in his books. People who investigate for a living take courses to learn all of the stuff he says, but good instructors tell their students to take it all with a grain of salt. And as for this video, John Molloy wrote Dress for Success in 1975. When I was young it was something of a gospel for anyone in business school.

I noticed right away that the vast majority of the men were taller than me and I’d say the average height of the men was 6’1″-6’2″.
    2. I can off the top of my head think of four college buddies who are 6’4″ or taller. They were average students and all four of them are very successful.

In highschool I didn’t have the best hygiene, even relative to most of my peers. I was always pretty nerdy, but I would always try to stand up for myself when picked on (not always effectively). I always tried to give every new kid the best chance, and tried to be respectful (though my understanding of what that meant was not always accurate). I wasn’t shy about my enjoyment of most academics, and I was good at some I didn’t enjoy (such as math) and enjoyed some that I wasn’t good at (art, woodshop).

Despite my poor presentation, my senior yearbook I was one of three students my peers considered “most likely to be president.” Fast forward in life, most people wouldn’t consider me very successful. Academic skills that seemed nice on the surface I was not able to capitalize on due to a lack of other skills.

    Life is odd that way.

Depends on the person who is interview you, her/ his mood at the time, physical needs at the moment, perception also plays a huge role. If a person is hungry will be negative, if had a lunch will be more positive. If the interviewer has biases will also make a difference.

I am one of Jehovah’s Witnesses and people seem to trust us. One of the reasons is our consistency in conservative dress. We try maintaining good conduct and wearing decent clothes in our ministry. The day we stop our preaching activity our neighbors are going to be looking for us. Even perhaps the ones we annoyed. ☺
