Former senior US national security official Miles Taylor shares a personal account that raises a broader civic concern: the growing cost of dissent in American public life. Drawing on his experience inside government and living the consequences of speaking openly, he says that the real threat to US democracy isn’t the politicians or hard-liners — it’s the two-thirds of Americans who don’t speak up. (This talk contains mature language.) (Recorded at TEDxMidAtlantic on November 1, 2025)

Welcome to the republican party, Miles. “Conservative” is just a euphemism for violent, control obsessed person. Why do you Republicans argue about which groups it’s okay to attack first? …or which psychotic figure heads are fit to lead? The goals of conservatives are always the same. You want to take all freedoms and rights away from anyone who disagrees with you (eventually) while disparaging and scamming those with less means.

Amazing TED talk. Takes a whole lotta courage to speak out, especially in the face of an imbalanced power dynamic. We should all be so lucky to answer that call honorably…

You lost me with your both sides crap. The statistics may be accurate but there’s one party that ended democracy and got away with insurrection. There is one party that threatens and attacks anyone who challenges their complete control. One party that supports, stokes, and encourages violence. Therefore, while I don’t agree with violence as a solution, it’s not the same question being posed to supporters of the two parties. One party is already the victim of violence and terrorism and is contemplating defending themselves and the democratic way of life. The other is considering if violence is the quickest way to eliminate any opposition to their coup against the constitution.

That should be a blaring red light to the Epstein class stop suppressing our wages stop poisoning people and the Earth…. Pick up a history book. See what happens in similar circumstances. 2 ours….It’s not great, it’s famine, droughts, disease, blood, violence and all-around chaos……. But remember you do have a chance to do the right thing. I don’t want that to happen and I pray that neither do you

“I am certain that my fellow Americans expect that on my induction into the Presidency I will address them with a candor and a decision which the present situation of our Nation impels. This is preeminently the time to speak the truth, the whole truth, frankly and boldly. Nor need we shrink from honestly facing conditions in our country today. This great Nation will endure as it has endured, will revive and will prosper. So, first of all, let me assert my firm belief that the only thing we have to fear is fear itself–****nameless, unreasoning, unjustified terror which paralyzes needed efforts to convert retreat into advance.*** In every dark hour of our national life a leadership of frankness and vigor has met with that understanding and support of the people themselves which is essential to victory. I am convinced that you will again give that support to leadership in these critical days.

The reality is that Donald Trump has committed treason several times. The only difference is that Congress refused to hold him accountable and held up party lines. The Supreme Court has committed perjury and betrayed the American people. The law and the ‘servants of the People’ have been found lacking. Insurrectionists pardoned. War crimes committed. Funding genocide. When does ‘revolution’ become a duty?

Coaches kept telling Maxwell Pearce to stick to the fundamentals. Good thing he didn’t listen. A Harlem Globetrotter and artist, he went on to build a global reputation for gravity-defying dunks and a theory that the same playful rule-breaking is what powers progress in every field. In this joyful talk, he makes the case that play isn’t the opposite of serious work — it’s the secret ingredient behind it. (Recorded at Play@TED on May 14, 2026)
