Still just about managing with 5gb. But… sometimes iCloud reports I have gone above 5gb when I haven’t so I have to turn off iCloud backup and then back on again to fix that.

I have never paid for iCloud storage. I have Dropbox on both my iPhone and my Mac, so every photo and video I take is synced automatically to my Mac, complete with the names changed to date and time, so I know exactly when I took it. Every day, I clear the Dropbox folder on my Mac and drag the files I want to keep to a local folder that isn’t synced with Dropbox, so I never reach the limit for free Dropbox. Then I can keep or delete the files on my iPhone as I please.

I recently decided to un-iCloud. Had over a thousand videos, over 17k photos, 4k+ screenshots 😱 and here I thought I was good at only saving my favorites 😂 still going through photos though. Moved all my files to a hardrive and soon will downgrade my iCloud plan. Something I should’ve done years ago. My greatest tip for anyone is: every time you take photos or videos, go through them right away and delete the ones you don’t want. Digital hygiene is a must-do.

She has 2 TB of garbage saved in iCloud. I barely have 200 MB saved in one of my iClouds. I will never get to the 5 GB of iCloud on any one device. Our house has a lot of devices, but we get 5 GB of iCloud per device. We are currently rocking 65 GB of iCloud for free.

To everyone deciding to store their files, pictures, videos, etc on DVD, NAS, hard drive, thumb drive, etc. please remember that if that media is damaged, stolen, burns up in a fire or is ruined in a flood, you’ve just lost all of that data. Most people don’t backup in such a manner that they have a second backup in some separate location in the event the primary backup is lost. Additionally, make sure the backed up data is encrypted to prevent the bad guys from seeing it if your backup media falls into the wrong hands.

I have 574 GB in messages in the cloud
4.7 TB in iCloud Photos
283 GB in iCloud Drive
8.6 GB in Voice Memo
3.4 GB in Notes
And just so you know the information in this video is incorrect. From iPhone storage with Messages, what you delete there does not delete it from the cloud. That’s only what stored on the device. If you want to delete that video from the cloud you have to delete it from within the Messages app.

Now another way I use I delete my old iPhone back up and then set what to put on the next update cause Facebook and instagram and most account based apps have your data you don’t need to back up that too. If you’re downloading large files on your iPhone though maybe you should minimise that too because those end up on the back up.

The idea to have extra iCloud storage is to make sure everything is being backed up periodically. In case if something happens to your iPhone your data is saved on iCloud. You can then restore it to your another or new iPhone. If you are gonna have everything locally saved there is a risk of data loss.

One thing about using SSDs is that they aren’t intended for long time storage. Its physics. SSDs have an issue were the nand trapped electrons leak out over time causing data corruption. To prevent this corruption, plug in SSDs into your PC or Mac for at least 1hr so the device can refresh those nand with fresh electrons every 3 months. HDDs are better for longer storage so long it’s kept in a cool dry place. You still need to recopy the data every 3 to 5 years because the magnetic field weakens over time and mechanical arms and motor.
The most precious memories or files should stay on the cloud and others you want to archive go on external storage. Always have a backup for the back up. One failed drive away from losing all that data isn’t wise.

When you offload anything, now you have the only one physical media with important data, and if it fails you lose everything! Now you have to take care of your data safety by syncing it across many medias.
When files in the cloud you are not risking physical media loss.

They want you more in their ecosystem by having more of their devices, but you don’t get more storage space the more devices you own, and each device needs its own back up space, not to mention that you often have the same app on multiple devices, and they all get backed up

I hate That they give you limited options to delete things. You should be able to choose how long you want to keep messages for. 30 days, one year or forever seems really limited. Just like iCloud, it should be that you can choose Your backup option On a scale, Not just The three options.

I setup 2 SSDs in RAID1 setup with my Mac mini using disk utility, then used Tailscale and Mac folder sharing setup, along with always wake settings, so that I can access them from anywhere (iPhone, iPad, MacBook). One time setup, not too complicated, and save money over time if you have a desktop Mac. If not, dedicated NAS or portable ssd.

Paid the 99p a month for 50GB years but dam they got me for 2.99 so my new iphone and new iPad could could back up. I bought a external drive but it needs formatted for Apple when it’s my pc back up.

Google One, so Apple should do this too, we copy each other for a good reason, suggests which videos etc to delete on your storage like huge videos such as my gaming videos. But yeah, good idea to an external drive. I have a USB dongle or few for saving video etc to a flash drive, I have a 256gb one and I can also connect cables to my laptop. That Apple One top tier is great! I’m glad they’re doing something similar.

I have a different method for keeping my cloud storage under control:
I have a Photos library for each year. At the end of the year I copy that year’s library to external drives and delete it from iCloud. Then I create a new library for the year ahead and set the new library to sync to iCloud. So I only have the current year’s photos (and videos) on my phone.
I keep the old libraries on a 2TB USB4 Sandisk SSD external drive, which is convenient to carry and quick to access on a Mac if required. I also keep a couple of backups of each library on slower spinning-platter drives too, as just in case the SSD fails or is lost or damaged.
At the end of last year, 200 GB of iCloud storage was enough for my photos and videos etc.

It’s a real pain to backup your phone data like photos let alone the thousands of photos you send through the messages app. You can’t just download the photos and from the app. My wife and I have a lot of photos that we’ve been sending through messages. It’s very difficult to get those off the device fast. I have an older model with lightning and that connection is wildly unstable. It takes over a day to get everything off. Also you need to batch it otherwise it will disconnect.

A good tip is to type a date into your photos, such as 1 January and then go and delete what you dont want from that date. So if you do it every day, 5 mins of clean up of that date (for every year) – it is a quick way to cleanup

I find the easiest way to do this is to log into iCloud (this assumes that action is taken before icloud storage is full and assumes all your photos are in iCloud). Mark all photos you want to download and download as unmodified originals. Once the file is downloaded, delete the photos that have been downloaded. It’s easy to identify these as they are still highlighted. Job done.

I have a synology nas and moving pics and movies to it via their Photos Mobile app has been pretty great. Only downside is it takes a while over the lan and you wanna just leave your phone alone while it’s doing it. Best to do over night
