This is very good, but I won’t be surprised if this same garbage clump reappears after some time. Why not close many plastic manufacturers to force the system to clean up and recycle the collected plastic?

I’m not a global warming believer but I really like this idea. We don’t need birds feeding plastic to their chicks anymore. I’m glad you haven’t given up on this. I’ve always said in the future they will mine garbage landfills for plastic, but now they are doing it in the ocean. This is very good progress. The time to develop the way will be worth it when the time to do the clean up will be shorter.

I saw a video on the pacific garbage patch earlier this year, and it has weighed on my mind to this day. I actually had a couple sleepless nights as I couldn’t fathom at first the immensity of this. But I am thankful that there are individuals out there willing to tackle this head on. I know the news will probably never report on this, which is quite unfortunate. But that is what we have YT for.

This is great but I have concerns that the majority of the plastic in the ocean is found below the couple of metres this project is capturing from.

    • Lancer the body bag

      November 4, 2021 at 1:28 am

I’d start with transforming to a participatory economy, with a totalitarian environmental ideology until we get back in balance. After that, continue with participatory economics and increase liberty, while maintaining earth balance. Have a focus on technologies that increase our freedom from drudgery

Corporate socialism, the bailing out of fossil fuel companies has to have the string attached that they become far more active at reducing the use of single use material.
As for the use of salvaged material some countries are now using it for road construction and I’m sure there are a lot of good uses out there waiting to be discovered.

This is an awesome story, but is this type of cleanup catching micro-plastics or just the larger pieces? For memory the vast majority of plastic in the oceans is currently micro-plastics, and while it is these larger pieces that directly kill animals, the toxins from microplastics are likely to have the bigger long-term effects.

There is also the Sargasso Sea Atlantic Ocean gyre, which is chock full of garbage and the same size as the pacific garbage patch. I love how literally no one ever talks about it /s

I hope people start to realize that the trash in the ocean is mostly from countries that don’t have proper waste disposal.

I just saw a Mark rober video where he is cleaning up the coastline of somewhere in the Caribbean with mr beast and Mark literally said he saw people throwing garbage in the water.
This trash is a direct result of third world countries not having proper garbage pickup and disposal protocols and until they find solutions for that problem, the ocean will never be clean.

Propagandist. You can’t even being to clean up before you stop the dumping. But the dumping is done by countries that you can’t shame. So instead of doing something useful you will virtue signal and create more incentive for the major ocean polluters to pollute more; people will just clean up after them! Shame on you; this is a scam.

This sounds a bit bogus to me. I thought that the big patch is made mostly of micro particles and this will not be able to collect them. Also the amount of fuel you will spend on this would probably be way more then plastic you collect. And finally did we already not figure out that recycled plastic was just happening and most municipalities that say that they are recycling are in fact not doing this.
