Hip-hop gets blamed for being a bad influence — but the data shows a different story #TEDTalks
Hip-hop often gets blamed for its controversial lyrics. What if there was a way to actually measure its impact on people’s lives? Analyzing 40 years’ worth of radio station data and lyrics from rappers like Tupac, Dr. Dre, Jay-Z and Kendrick Lamar, economist Roland Fryer puts one of culture’s most notorious debates on trial.

Entertainment ought to be entertaining. Not boring.
Maybe provocative, so people reflect.
Maybe cathartic so people can feel some release of the pent up emotions they have.
Why impoverish people’s lives when this hasn’t even been shown to cause worse outcomes?

No no! GTA causes mass schootings and not the unmitigated access to firearms and extremely limited access to mental health support and evaluation. It has always been this simple but even when you pull the data line for line, point for point, year over year, as you know, the rampant racism keeping the country with a foot in the grave will never stop perpetuating the propaganda.

Yes, if lyrics are to go with. Next generations of doctors, lawyer and engineers, maybe that’d listen and not follow their steps but sadly far and few in between who actually think “gangsta and hood life” is all they have, and end up all they have due to their actions. I feel like Black community isn’t harsh enough on realty, MLK would have been ashamed. Lift people up, not push them down.

September 9, 2026 at 11:29 am
@oo7PorscheMGS the fact that rap or hiphop culture has does not affect black communities? I think it affects ALL communities. It influences behavior. All forms of art does.
@oo7PorscheMGS
September 9, 2026 at 11:33 am
@ericmathurin1913 the data shows otherwise 😂🤷🏻♂️. People been crying about hard rock and videogames and comic books for decades. There are other, MUCH bigger influences.
@ericmathurin1913
September 9, 2026 at 2:40 pm
@oo7PorscheMGS Video games, hard rock, TV shows, movies, music—all forms of art have influence. I don’t trust the data claiming hip-hop has no impact. The bottom line is that our five societal institutions (religion, education, government, economy, and family) have a massive impact on our behavior. In a capitalist society, art falls directly under the economy, education, and government. As a young Black man, I looked up to my favorite rappers. Because they were rich, considered cool and influential. That means once upon a time, I thought it was cool to talk, walk, and act like them. Just the other day, I was sitting at the dinner table and my niece recited a lyric from Sexyy Red about her “coochie pink” and “booty hole brown.” Mind you, my niece is 25% black 75% white and she’s only 10 yrs old!. I also know young people who think it’s cool to be a gangster because of the influence of gangster movies and rap songs.Trying to ignore the impact of the art we consume is wildly irresponsible. My argument is that all art influences everyone’s behavior—not just Black people. Lastly, its not just the art itself that influences us, but it sure is a piece of it!
@oo7PorscheMGS
September 9, 2026 at 3:26 pm
@ericmathurin1913 other things have MUCH more impact than listening to a song does. I don’t go out and shoot people just cuz I listen to aggressive music by Tupac, Dre and Eminem. Use your brain, there are MUCH bigger factors than music and games and movies 😂

@Toebeans-mp3ef
September 9, 2026 at 4:05 pm
Well, do people know and understand the lyrics? How many people make up lyrics until they know them 🤔🤭 Music creates a flow – the underlying flow in hip-hop is achievement and drive. From there, you get a tempo, focus, and synchronicity. That’s why music like Daft Punk is good for certain office work. Tuning the uni-verse requires many (spinal)cords in-pitch and on key 🤓✨🫸🎹⌨️🎼🫷🙇♀️
