The Brains of Altruistic and Psychopathic People (W/ Abigail Marsh) | How to Be a Better Human | TED
Why don’t billionaires give more? What makes some people so generous that they’d undergo surgery to donate an organ to a complete stranger? These are the kinds of questions that Abigail Marsh, a professor of psychology and neuroscience at Georgetown University, studies. Chris and Abigail discuss the brain differences between extreme altruists and psychopathic individuals,…

Thank you I very much appreciate this conversation however as somebody who raises about 1000 free range, animals, pigs, chickens, ducks, horses, donkeys, goats, sheep, cats, dogs all without any constraints. I’ve had the opportunity to watch behavioral patterns and to try to understand aggression, under different circumstances, and dominance and submission. Although I agree that What we’re calling, antisocial behavior or aggression or psychopathy is something worth considering my observations have led me to believe that energy itself manifest in aggressive behavior, and that’s not necessarily a bad thing levels of aggression wax and Wayne dependent upon community structures and resource availability and distribution. Just something to consider in the bigger picture

Thank you for putting a name to what I am. I have a uncontrollable impulse help people in any way i can and to put my life at risk of i see someone in danger of losing there life. I cannot control it and it seems as if it’s natural and that everyone really feels like this but lacks the courage, that’s all. If i see someone drowning I’d be the first one in the water. Why? I didn’t know, i really thought everyone was like this, i don’t see it as anything special. I see as human nature, like breathing, how are you going to tell me how great i am for breathing? The reason people don’t like flattery is because when you do it, it makes them think why didn’t you do it? And brings negative feelings of, why can’t you understand what i did? Are you not human? Wouldn’t you do the same? We are not looking for flattering, we are expecting responses like, thank God you got there in time, i was on my way and was about to jump in the water but you beat me to it”.😊 Not wow, how did you do that? And what a hero you are! When people say that it makes altruistic people look at them as if they are not good people and look at them as in why didn’t they do it? Altruistic people look down on people like that because they seem to be not good people to them or not human enough to understand what they did is automatic and shouldn’t even be thought of, you see someone in trouble you help, it’s automatic just like breathing”. ❤️🔥🫂

I’ve got that automatic rushing in – even in dangerous situations. I put out a fire on a banquet table in a high rise, grabbed a guitar that fell out of a truck in traffic, ran up to stop domestic abuse more than once. It just happens. I feel strong, and “this is not going to happen.” I would hope I would not try to help someone drowning because I can’t swim.

I lost a good friend that was put in a position by a senator and the senators dad and the investigators uncle, and me to take the Klan down in his hometown. And the FBI sided with the Klan and help them cover up two murders. He took his life after losing his wife.

I wonder what percentage of kids who get ‘diagnosed’ with pre-psychopathic traits would have developed ‘normal’ emotional characteristics if they had been warmly loved, cuddled and delighted in by their parents/care-providers from birth onward. Pre-verbal learning is difficult to access, but I would guess that many of these children have been neglected emotionally, not offered co-regulation by parents/teachers/etc., left to ‘cry it out’ and even punished (facial signals of irritation/disapproval, abrupt or harsh handling, scolding, etc.) for expressing needs (as babies/young children do with fussing, crying, etc.) by the adults who were responsible for them.
I want to cry just thinking about the helpless innocence of infants whose parents are clueless, violent or selfishly motivated.

20:03 didn’t know that fearless, “not learning” from punishment or hurt can be a core component. Just people who want they want, and not terribly affected by guilt remorse or caring about others. An unusually fearless temperament
24:59 thanks for deacribing pattern of exploitative behavior across situationships. Lots of shallow or mutually beneficial colleagyes rather than long standing ties.
25:30 also interesting to look for variations
29:42 thanks for describing this reinforcement tool and emphasizing punishments r basically useless. Much more warm and loving tip is interesting too. Genuine love warmth and affection coupled with high standards and high expectations
32:25 did not know many psychopathic individuals don’t have insight to their own input to their circumstances
35:46 interesting altruism are sensitive to fears

Love this conversation. I’ll admit I was eye rolling at the billionaires question but she handled every question with a maturity you don’t typically see in response to that kind of question.
All of this makes me think of the drama triangle. I think there’s some relationship between the persecutor, fear, and psychopathy (detachment from fear). There are likely a lot of people who see themselves as altruistic and that fits the rescuer role. I think there’s a link between rescuer, prejudice, and sociopathy. The victim role linked entitlement and narcissism. I’m just throwing my own mud around here.
I’m just glad that there are people with compassion for the humans that most seem to reject. Listening and compassion is profoundly important for any positive contribution to humanity.

These authors or artists or speakers think if they copy and paste facts they did not make then they are holier than thou. Most righteous of social praise until you tell them to put their facts to practice then they are influencers looking for a simple life and you should leave them alone after contradicting the facts that gave them 15 sec of fame

This video dives into the fascinating contrast between altruism and psychopathy, but I can’t help but wonder: are we too quick to label individuals as “psychopathic” based on their behaviors? What if some so-called psychopathic traits—like a lack of empathy—could actually stem from societal pressures or mental health issues rather than a cold-hearted nature? It’s almost like we’re creating a binary of good vs. evil when human behavior is so much more complex. Maybe instead of focusing solely on the extremes, we should explore the gray areas in between. After all, understanding the root causes of such behaviors could lead to more effective interventions and a more compassionate society. What do you all think? Are we missing the bigger picture here?
@bm.6349
December 4, 2025 at 7:43 am
Isn’t mental illness part of someone’s nature? It could be genetic/something in their family line, so it’s in their nature.
@WayinVideo-DeepQA
December 4, 2025 at 8:08 am
@bm.6349 You’re right! Mental illness often has genetic roots, so it can be part of someone’s nature. However, it’s not just about genes; environment and experiences also play a huge role in shaping behavior. Understanding this mix can help us approach mental health with more empathy and support.

If we look at our own lives individually without listening to the smartest fools on the internet. Antisocial disorder is based on alot of things like this perspective. It is good to have your own home and be independent isn’t that antisocial because you can sustain yourself. These people cannot sustain their internet personalities you think their off camera lives are better?

Real altruism is quiet—no spotlight, no applause. Just courage, compassion, and the belief that another person’s life matters as much as your own
@terrahillman151
December 4, 2025 at 11:15 am
Intent is the way you determine if the altruism is to help others or to actually help themselves imo
@lifemotivation6789
December 5, 2025 at 7:22 am
@terrahillman151 Absolutely. Intent is everything.
Real altruism comes from a place of genuine care, not validation.
When the heart is clean, the action speaks for itself — quietly, powerfully, and without needing anything in return.

And then there’s BPD. Borderline personality disorder. So much emotional dysregulation and interpersonal conflicts and stuff. Sometimes I wish I had some psychopathic tendencies. Not because I want to lack remorse or guilt or anything. I was just never that charming. I’m kind of prickly at times and very moody. So what happens is the love I desperately want I cannot have because there’s this I don’t know. Repulsor force field attached to me That just seems to sabotage my efforts. Plus I have physical disabilities and that doesn’t help. I i’m glad I’m not. a person with psychopathy, but I sure wish I had the charm sometimes.
