You can control your ASMR with some practice. Problem is, it’s VERY powerful, your entire body can feel like it’s vibrating intensely, it’s tied to emotion.

Some scientists believe it’s a genetic mutation that only occurs in less than 2-4% of the population.

The MRI at my old hospital was relaxing. Take me to a new MRI put on those headphones they had and scan my brain. I full on fell asleep in that thing. There are people you can test just got to find people who respond well to mris. Older crapper ones yes are loud but newer machines I’ve had no issues with.

  37. Autumnpixx ASMR

    May 25, 2019 at 2:40 pm

There’s definitely a hereditary component, because at only 18 mos old, my daughter prompted me to scratch and tap her textured baby books close to her ear, and her eyes would droop in relaxation right away. As well, it would be good to research not just visually-triggered people. There are those of us out there who are sounds people, and we simply need some crinkling, tapping, scratching, etc. noises in our ears, and boom, good night moon. I use it whenever I need to fall (back) to sleep. This huge piece wasn’t really touched on by the psychologist.

There’s nothing maternal for me; I’m not even into the personal attention ones. I prefer the noises, like scratching, tapping, crinkly things. I think the reason ASMR is so hard to understand, is because it’s different for everyone. Not everyone likes the personal attention ones, just like not everyone likes the ones I like.
So, in essence, they just don’t get it.

I wish she had asked about people who DON’T find ASMR soothing. My son and I both have ADHD, and we both find ASMR videos annoying and cringey. In trying to find out what all the craze was about, I discovered that I can’t make it more than 30 seconds before I have to turn the video off. Many of the examples shown in this video actually set my teeth on edge. I like the sound of ME doing something like playing with slime, but can’t stand listening to someone else do it. Sensory sensitivity is a common ADHD symptom, so I wonder: Do those who don’t like ASMR have ADHD or some sort of sensory sensitivity, and/or do most people with these issues tend to find ASMR irritating rather than soothing?

    • 1999

      May 27, 2019 at 12:01 pm

The only thing I can think of is Misophonia. People who have it experience psychological and physiological distress as a response to certain sounds.

Or maybe you’re right that since sensory sensitivity is a common symptom of ADHD, you and your son have a negative response due to ADHD.

Or maybe you just don’t like ASMR and it’s just a preference thing.

When I was a kid, I experienced the tingle for the first time… I thought I was the only person that felt it ever… And I always asked people if they ever felt it before. Not until the ASMR craze on youtube did I put 2 and 2 together.

The best kind of ASMR is massage ASMR with no talking. You fall asleep feeling like you’re being massaged in a very relaxing environment. I hate it when there are whisperings or “soft-spoken” voices, it ruins the whole purpose of me wanting some alone time while sleeping and resting.

What if ASMR appeared so recently because people are attempting to recreate an experience of intimacy without truly involving other people?

    • driiifter

      May 27, 2019 at 2:14 pm

it didn’t appear recently. i’ve been watching GentleWhispering since 2012 and the first ASMR videos that popped up were unintentional and also women didn’t record their faces in them, most were faceless.

    • Noora Black

      May 27, 2019 at 4:57 pm

+driiifter I still kinda think we might be attempting to create intimacy without involving other people. ASMR kinda solves the problem.

  95. Margaret Lynch

    May 27, 2019 at 2:50 pm

I appreciate they tried, but the Wired employee needs to use “like” less in her questions because it makes her seem very underprepared. Her questions are all essentially the same, and this whole video boils down to, “ASMR is a thing which appears to be both psychological AND physiological but it’s not well understood yet, TLDR needs more study.”
Also I had to google mukbang, I think Wired is erroneously conflating a lot of popular internet items into the ASMR world.

I used to feel the tingles in my head and spine since I was kid int school and this specific girl in my class was assigned to read something. I thought everyone had this. Some years ago I found out ASMR while people still called it whisper community. Back when Lita Ford was the queen of relaxation. With me only talking works. All the other weird noises that people do actually freak me out: tapping, mouths sounds, ear eating, slime, sand, mukbang.
Yikes. I’m 100% soft spoken anything. Even just explaining chess or tutorials

I can actually cause what I am guessing is an ASMR feeling at will. At least I assume, I can experience a tingling sensation down my neck and spine. Though ASMR videos don’t do it for me.

Intriguing. I have MRI scans every year. Sometime I fall asleep as the rhythmically loud magnets dampened down by ear defenders are actually quite soothing! If anything it’s a chance to lie down for 40 mins and an opportunity to practice beatboxing ? I severely need it..

Her vocal fry is very distracting. Why did they film this video this way? Why not have her video match his?

    June 9, 2019 at 11:19 am

So what this say ASMR is a psychological substitute for our need of being close to another person? Like a mental masturbation?
