How can I help? Is there anything I can do to help the cause of people in Gambia? It’s horribly ironic that imported chicken is now cheaper for them than the local fish they could be obtaining for themselves right there, and so sad that this is causing health problems in a country without good healthcare… This is not progress. This is totally backwards.

They’re going to have to accept that their old way of life is over. Buy if they wanted to level the playing field with the fish factory, they can either pressure the local government to increase taxes such as revenue, export, and property value on just the factory, or they can encourage new developments in the area with tax incentives. When you lose sight of your effort you can find yourself searching for home. Now, the fish. Fish are like leaves of a tree when they come for food you must harvest them all so they do not eat their food … as long as there is food they will struggle for it like the sun struggles to light each day. *_TIMESTAMPS_* & Summary (by *VidSkipper AI* ): Industrial fish meal factories in The Gambia are depleting local fish stocks, devastating livelihoods, and harming communities, leading to environmental degradation, economic hardship, and increased migration among youth.
0:07 🎣 The Impact of Fish Meal Factories
    • 🎣 Gunjur, Gambia, a fishing village of 25,000, faced dramatic fish shortages after a fish meal factory began operations in 2016.
    • 🏭 The factory, promising 600 jobs and infrastructure, failed to deliver, leading to distrust and unfulfilled promises.
    • 🐟 The factory’s primary input is fresh, small pelagic fish, a crucial protein source and economic foundation for local Gambians.
1:54 📉 Social and Economic Consequences
    • 📉 Women in fish processing struggled and lost jobs due to the factory prioritizing catches for fish meal production.
    • 🚨 Tourism declined due to unbearable smells, leading to increased crime, poverty, and substance abuse among youth.
    • 🌊 Hundreds of youth drowned in the Atlantic Ocean attempting to reach Europe, driven by the loss of opportunities caused by the factory.
3:31 🌊 Environmental Degradation and Activism
    • 🌊 In 2018, the factory was found disposing of industrial waste into the ocean, leading to environmental degradation.
    • ✊ After authorities failed to act, Jassey and others removed the waste pipe, resulting in their arrest and a six-month court battle.
    • 🇪🇺 The government signed a six-year fishing agreement with the EU, further depleting fish stocks and making fish more expensive.
5:49 🎣 Depletion of Fish Stocks and Export
    • 🎣 Fishermen began catching juvenile fish for the factory, despite regulations prohibiting it.
    • 🌍 Fish meal produced is exported to China, Europe, and South America for salmon and aquaculture farms.
    • 🤝 Jassey’s organization collaborates with international groups to empower women processors and fishermen, collecting data to inform decision-makers.
