Mark Rober (@MarkRober) spent years trying to land a rover on Mars. Now, the former NASA engineer turned science YouTuber with millions of subscribers is launching a new mission: to teach the next generation of big problem solvers. That’s why he’s spending 60 million dollars to build a STEM curriculum kids actually want. With squirrel obstacle courses, giant lasers and elephant toothpaste explosions, who wouldn’t want to learn from YouTube’s top engineer? (Recorded at TED2026 on April 14, 2026)

Teachers have the most important job on the planet and are totally under compensated so I’m teaming up with them to teach science class for free. You can visit ClassCrunchLabs.org to support and learn more.

Spectacle, spectacle, spectacle… Everything for short-term eyeballs and “likes”.
The opening spectacle is riveting; no argument.
Sadly, the explosion DOES NOT void the necessity of learning the formulas about gas pressure, temp and volume.
“Sugar coating” science to compete with social media is, imo, pandering to the enemy.

Anecdote: 20 years AFTER leaving school I found a need for the Polar-Rectangular conversion formulas, and logarithms… Both were tools used to as part of a lucrative contract. If not for “eating the vegetables” at school, recalling some spectacular explosions, or many colourful shapes flying through the air, would not have served any purpose.

12:28 I agree with this quote. Science is like magic. The cool thing about science is that by applying its principles, we can create magnificent things, which in turn, open our eyes to new science, and things that would have seemed magical a few decades ago! Science feeds itself and actively opposes the fear of the unknown by embracing it!

  31. @LaughingOrange

I am split on free tools in teaching. On the one side, free tools give teachers access to choose what tools to use without having to go to the government for funding. On the other side, I think those who develop the best teaching tools deserve to get paid. Mark obviously has alternative revenue streams that can help fund this free tool, but others aren’t so lucky.

  34. @Bruellhusten123

    May 28, 2026 at 8:54 pm

    Thank you Mark!
This is the first step into 21st century education.
At the start of COVID I was part of a hackathon where devs tried to come up with solutions to problems we face during the pandemic. And one major one was schools being closed and teachers trying to suddenly wing their classes via Zoom. What the team I was part of tried to tackle was an education system that is accessible by kinds as well where the knowledge is structured. I got inspired to this vision by an amazing edx course I did on quantum informatics. Of course – not a topic for middle school, but still: The principles of top notch short format learning videos with quizzes in between to check if you understood the 5 min video and a little exam at the end of every block. Being out of college for a while, I did have struggles grasping every bit immediately and I ended up rewatching some explanations multiple times until I could pass the quizzes.

Why this is relevant? Everybody can likely remember great teachers they had and bad ones. Teachers that really sparked motivation. And since devs are natural optimisers – we were wondering: What even is the benefit of so many teachers working out lesson structures over and over again. Working on the same material in parallel. And talking to teachers during that time one statement was very clear throughout “we don’t have the time to focus on individual needs of students. We present the topic. You either understand it immediately or there is just very limited time to catch up if you don’t.”

Since knowledge in science is building up on previous things learned, there is so much potential in connecting blocks of knowledge. For example: The topic ‘Gravitation’ requires Math topics ‘equasions’, ‘fractals’, (…); physic topics ‘force’, ‘solar system basics’. So if your 10yo kid had a horrible math teacher and struggles hard with the basics, it can rewatch and refresh the math topics needed to understand the ‘Gravitation’ lesson.
And to not only focus on students that struggle: You can link future topics that pupils can digg into if they want to learn what gravitation is needed for. Simply because you learn things way more efficiently that you choose yourself. Simply because it interests you.

So your platform is an amazing and probably the most crucial step in this direction: Make education material accessible, so every pupil can access top notch science classes. And furthermore: A good teacher in a different field can easily take over without a drop in quality.

I hope your project goes very big and is one of many more steps to follow in using the internet for better education.

My 5-year-old has been watching Mark for over a year. He started reading at 2 and began completing the Build Box projects independently at 4. Now he talks about projectile motion with parents at the playground and points out hydraulics at work on construction vehicles.

When you ask what he wants to be when he grows up, his answer is usually either an aerospace engineer or Mark Rober. 😂

My question is: will this curriculum be available to everyone? And if not, are there plans to make it accessible to homeschool families as well? My son will likely be homeschooled when he starts primary school, and I’d love for him to have access to these resources.

Mark was the whole reason I’m getting into early college to become a mechanical engineer, I first saw his videos specifically the sand hot tub when I was 8 and that day on I always wanted to be smart like that and frankly I’m so happy to see classes using this method! My goal is to get into MIT and work at nasa as me and my father have always adored astronomy and theorize things together after 5 years of his videos my favorite being the egg in space I’m trying to graduate highschool early with my associates through the Splendora college program to get my masters ^^ I want to thank mark and his team for being a inspiration for my friends and myself alike to reach our goal

Imagine if Elon or the top 1% cared a fraction of what he does and mobilized their resources for good like this to help underpaid teachers and educate the next generation instead of replace them with foreign workers and robots. Tax the rich.

A multi-millionaire that is using his money to actually make the world a better place.
Musk could use his money to rebuild the 10 poorest school buildings in every state, equip them with the best technology and pay every teacher in them $100,000/year for five years… and he would still be able to make ends meet.
