“This is the first time motion capture was used to create a Disney animatronic.” Well, only in the modern sense of camera-based motion capture. There are rather famous clips of an Imagineer strapped into a physical rig that captured his movements to animate “John” for the original Carousel of Progress.
@BridgetCarey
May 28, 2026 at 12:25 pm
Very true! First time for that more modern movie-style method we know today.
@lightyear999
May 29, 2026 at 12:12 am
True. And even the figures for Muppetvision 3D were animated by actual Muppeteers, like Steve Whitmire and Dave Goelz. The movements were captured physically by servo motors instead of visually like modern mocap.
@Infinite_Ethan03
May 29, 2026 at 1:28 pm
@lightyear999, Steve and Dave weren’t performing Statler and Waldorf yet when Muppet*Vision opened. It was still Jim Henson and Richard Hunt when they were working on it before their unfortunate passings. But if you’re talking about the animatronics of them that they reused for Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster, then yeah, it’d be Peter Linz and Dave now.
@lightyear999
May 31, 2026 at 3:02 am
@Infinite_Ethan03Sorry that I wasn’t clear. I meant the in-theater animatronics for the original Muppetvision attraction. It was also before Richard Hunt had died as he was also part of that group.

Terrific! Now, please, make movies and TV shows we actually want to watch, instead of the slop Disney has produced for the last several decades. You can have all the tech in the world but who cares if they are about stories and characters we no longer care about?

They could have hired a real puppeteer….
@MarshalGrover
May 28, 2026 at 5:15 pm
That would be very taxing; that pre-show runs several dozen times a day. Even Muppet Vision had animatronic Muppets. Are they cop outs too?
@radish6691
May 28, 2026 at 10:55 pm
Just one? Even for an army of puppeteers it would be a grind. Executing the same rote motions with perfect timing repeatedly throughout the day all week long is drudgery; it’s the type of job that should be automated.

May 28, 2026 at 2:48 pm

Disney going to destroy the Muppets. 😕
@MarshalGrover

How did you get that from this at all?
@ChicagoBob123
May 28, 2026 at 5:43 pm
@MarshalGroverit’s Disney’s recent history of destroying all their characters. From Star wars, to show white. Disney has mucked up everything.

I think screens ruin the experience and is a bs way to handle the magic of Disney.
@braddiehl37
May 30, 2026 at 10:59 am
I’m with you but in this specific case they are replacing old screens with newer screens. We just hope they don’t replace real figures with screens in the future.
@chaosmachinery
May 30, 2026 at 11:07 am
@braddiehl37new screens old screens, bringter colors and deeper blacks big deal they’re going to need alot of robots with ai, and that just sounds dystopian

May 29, 2026 at 4:05 pm
So a puppeteer had themselves mo-capped to take their own job away? Jesus.
@gtclewis
May 30, 2026 at 3:06 am
This might be a case where technology mimics a human in a situation where a human would never be feasible. Imagine a puppeteer performing that task over and over for hours at a time having to get the timing just right every time. I’m not a puppeteer so I can’t say for sure, but it seems highly unlikely.
@metallicnole4514
May 30, 2026 at 6:57 am
They mo-capped a puppeteer so that the animatronic had the motion of being puppeted. Not sure what’s hard to understand about that
@mgratk
May 29, 2026 at 4:25 pm
Disney is terrible on so many fronts. They are only surviving off of Disney adults who live in their own fantasy world detached from reality.

In the world of entertainment, the Muppets are like Tiffany’s jewelry wherever they are. One of the jewels of the crown in history, far much better that all the rest of the attractions. Whereas nowadays they are also alive with their AI puppeteers.

It’s a good start with the Muppets but I need to see more, like original stories in attractions, and stop squeezing the guest pockets. Bring back extra Magic Hours, free shuttles for guests staying on property. And lastly, bring back Free Fast Passes!
