We currently have enough fossil fuels to progressively transition off of them, says climate campaigner Tzeporah Berman, but the industry continues to expand oil, gas and coal production and exploration. With searing passion and unflinching nerve, Berman reveals the delusions keeping true progress from being made — and offers a realistic path forward: the Fossil Fuel Non-Proliferation Treaty. Learn more about the global initiative for transparency and accountability in phasing out fossil fuels forever, supported by the Dalai Lama, Nobel Prize laureates and many more.

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

Crude oil processing rates in China reached a record last year, rising by 4 percent over 2020 to 14.13 million barrels daily, Bloomberg reported, noting that the increase was led by state refiners.

The state-owned majors had to step in and compensate for drops in production in the independent refining industry as Beijing clamped down on the so-called teapots with a tax on dirtier feedstocks.

This year will likely see further increases in the amount of crude Chinese refineries process as two new facilities will come on stream. One of these, property of independent Shengdong Group, will have a capacity of 320,000 barrels daily. The other, a property of PetroChina, will have the capacity to process 400,000 bpd.

Libya’s crude oil production has rebounded to 1.2 million barrels daily, according to the country’s oil minister, Mohammed Oun.

Speaking to Bloomberg, Oun said Libya’s crude oil output was back to normal after a series of outages, adding that the biggest field in the country, El Sharara, was producing at near maximum capacity, which is 300,000 bpd.

Libya’s oil production dropped sharply earlier this month after the National Oil Corporation shut down a key pipeline for much-needed repairs. The pipeline shutdown led to a 200,000-bpd decline in production.

Global demand for fossils fuels is increasing. If your want change you have to first change the demand. Expecting publicly traded company to reduce production when demand is increasing is ignorance.

    • jadoei13

      January 17, 2022 at 8:33 pm

Yes I totally agree but at the same time the demand is very much price dependent. If they were twice as expensive the demand would start to decrease over time and drive customers towards alternatives. In that regard opening up a new oil field, which increases supply and decreases prices, is making the situation worse.

    • Eli Nope

      January 17, 2022 at 8:46 pm

@jadoei13 Its altering the situation. That is better or worse depending on your goals and desires. Not all people agree that this world order is a thing worth sustaining into the future.

You can do both. if you want to reduce dangerous illegal drugs, you need to both legalize safe alternatives, as well as go after illegal production.

Which is exactly the purpose of regulation, and in point of fact, the primary reason of having government at all – to protect everyone from the bad actions of the few. Sometimes you have to force profit-driven business to do the right thing. Regulation would allow us control production, which will drive prices up, which in turn motivates conversion to clean energies and reduces demand.
Part of the reason they are growing production (beyond what demand alone would require by the way) is that they are trying to keep costs low enough to help prevent people from making the switch to other sources.
But she’s right, as soon as you mine a ton of coal, or take a barrel of oil or gas out of the ground, you can pretty well guarantee that the carbon in it is going to end up in the atmosphere. If we are going to hit warming targets, we have to limit production through legislation/regulation AND change demand by propagating clean energy.

We simply don’t have time to think demand alone will get this done.

Weapons vs. Energy non-proliferation treaty. Weapons are optional and only useful to conquer and/or defend. Energy is everything else. It’s not going to be as ‘easy’.

  6. question ade

    January 17, 2022 at 7:44 pm

So what is it ‘climate change’ ‘climate crisis’ or ‘global warming’?

This poor woman is so deluded that what she is talking is complete goobledygook. Nitrogen 78%, Oxygen 21%, Argon 0.93%, CO2 0.04%
+ a touch of neon, heluim, methane, krypton (really), hydrogen and water vapour. These are the gases that make up earths atmosphere. Only a fraction of the 0.04% of carbon dioxide is man made. Termites make most of it. Fossil Fuels are the only credible power source. Alternatives like wind and solar are a total failure. They were never ever going to work and anyone who goes along with this idiocy needs their head tested. Learn about the roots of this ridiculous CO2 = bad narrative. You’ll find them in the oil industry. Look up Maurice Strong and the 1972 stockholm enviromental conference. Where it was first suggested by Maurice Strong (oilman) and Edmund de Rothschild that the burning of fossil fuels is harming the enviroment and they were going to do something about it. It wasn’t ‘warming’ back then just the opposite. By the time of the Rio Summit in 1990 what was predicted by these 2 charlatans had not materilized so they changed track and warned of anthropological ‘global warming’ which still to this day cannot be proved. Mainly because of the fact CO2 is the result of warming not the cause as is being touted by religious activist like this deluded speaker.

Solar/wind is only cheaper for the energy it produces, but not for the energy needed when they are not producing it during uncooperative weather or that pesky nighttime for solar. NOBODY would buy oil if it were truly cheaper to use alternatives today.

Look at the South Australia case study. With current battery storage tech, they managed to solve that problem. Keeping the money flowing into their bottomless coffers for as long as possible, even if it shoots their foot in the process. I’ve never understood fossil fuel subsidies. Anybody who pays attention to stock markets at all knows that fossil fuel is a WILDLY profitable industry. Why on earth are we handing them our tax money? All we are doing is spending revenue to increase their profit margin. We aren’t keeping them in business; they’d do just fine without the subsidies.
Really, if you want proof that government is corrupt, look no further. Our legislators can’t tell their lobbyists “no, you’re done getting free money”. Even while we talk about how we can’t afford to expand basic necessities like healthcare even the tiniest bit, every year we hand big oil free money they simply do not need.

A demand for crude oil will not stop because of climate change. The burning of Crude Oil might. The petro-chemical side is in plastics, detergents, pain killers and other drugs, paints, solvents and many other modern wonders. If we do not charge more than a small land use fee for larger and larger companies to put a straw in and suck the life out of the land we will lose whether we burn the crude oil or not.

I agree with her wholeheartedly. I really do. I just differ in that I accept the fact that we have failed. Nobody cares enough to change the status quo. We have the means we have the brains we definitely have the need what we don’t have is the will. It’s going to getting a whole lot worse before it ever starts to get better. And yeah it breaks my heart too. It is sinful it is disgusting it is evil. It’s humanity at its worst. Greed is truly the root of all evil. Talk amongst yourselves. Figure it out. I’m old. It’s on the young to break the back of this beast. I won’t be here to help you but my heart is with you. I have to believe in you.

No failure has destroyed humanity before, and we’ve continued forward despite the greed that would shackle us and taunt us with the shortness of our own lives. I think it’s about time for a new renaissance, don’t you?

Have hope. The pieces are in place, and the both of us are still alive. We’ll walk into the shining future together.

      January 18, 2022 at 12:40 pm

Coal is probably the main resource for producing electricity and to say electricity is better than fossil fuels is incorrect. It doesn’t match nor come close to the output of energy produced by combustion. Plus the convenience of fast refueling is better than the charging time of anything electric. Safety is probably the best debatable aspect of the 2, but either way, both remain crucial and neither can replace the other.

The problem about the change she mentions at the end of her speech is, that change to more “stuff” is easier. We have to change to less “stuff” to fix our problems and no one is happy about getting less, thats why such a change is harder to get. No one is willing to change their behaviour to more discipline and less comfort unless it is enforced strictly.

Keep the poor poor, the cold cold. 1,5 is a made up number. So much effort put in a cause that is based on a crazy Idea. Back to basics – CO2 is plant food. An increase from 300-400 ppm makes plants grow better. CO2 does not affect weather in any significant way. The only reason smart people agree on man made climate change, is because they want to keep their job or business. “Believers ” have taken over the western world. The same type of believers that thought kommunism was a good idea. Reality won there, but the urge to belong to a higher cause is strong. Nobody who wants to be included dares to ask the wrong questions. How dare you!? I would be fun to listen in on the conversation she has with her grandchildren when she explains that we use to travel and fly to experience other parts of the world. The children sitting with masks and implanted citizen chips waiting for their monthly vaccination, forbidden to leave their compound. -She won.

When a company mines gas, oil, or coal, do they do it to store it and never sell. No. The match consumption. We all enjoy heat, cooling, transportation and other comforts. Yet, we insist it is not our fault. Energy companies are simply supplying what we need and want. I prefer to run my furnace rather than freeze to death. When there is no demand, the companies will transition. So let’s focus on switching electricity to green sources, stop going to far away places for vacations and conferences, buy locally grown food when possible, and insist on not using single use plastics (40% of all plastics created). It is time to accept that we are causing climate change because of the way we live our lives. And yes, let’s keep pushing our governments to introduce reforms that incentivize us to reduce reliance on fossil fuels. Better insulated homes. More efficient appliances. Energy from green sources. No more gas guzzling vehicles.

    January 18, 2022 at 11:01 pm

This actually doesn’t matter if we do what needs to be done and begin to replace the natural systems that existed and sustained all life prior to the Industrial Revolution. We can keep burning fossil fuels if the coal and oil sand companies were willing to buy double the land, half to mine, and then half to rehabilitate into wild natural resources. If the offshore drillers are willing to rehabilitate twice again as much coast line as they threaten. And properly according to scientists fluent in natural ecology, not according to corporate expense reports and brand recognition.

We can put 5x as much carbon as we’ve produced so far back into the ground in the form of microbial mats. We can apply these overabundance models to global agriculture models and end food scarcity. Bring back the farmers and the idea that keeping land healthy and productive is the only truly noble way humans can live. Make being a farmer a choice anyone can make at any point in their lives and be empowered and provided with what they need to succeed. Put all the unemployed people to work sustaining their own lives and selling their abundance.

There is no reason to continue pretending this climate crisis isn’t solvable. Creating policy that benefits everyone is not only possible, but simple. And the only reason we aren’t passing these policies into law globally is because of localized pissing matches between life-long lead-poisoned geriatrics who’ve been runnin with autopilot behind their eyes for decades. They are too cognitively impaired to understand what is happening and they are replacing logic and reason with tribalism and aggression. Very clearly the result of their lead soak birth and subsequent lead showered lives prior to the 1980’s.

The solution to everything is to put back into the soil what was taken. All carbon can be turned into bacteria, fungus, plants, insects, and animals. ALL OF IT. So much so that we would need to carefully regulate how much abundance we create, and how we manage the waste, to avoid rapidly cooling the planet as quickly as we warmed it.

I just saved the future for billions of kids who haven’t even been born yet. But all you monkeys are busy fighting over who gets to wear the rubber pants. Extinction might just be the moral and ethical thing at this point.

      > We can keep burning fossil fuels if the coal and oil sand companies were willing to buy

@Bernhard Schmalhofer lets agree to disagree. It’s -21c here where I live. There isn’t a person here that will go without gas to heat their homes. Their isn’t enough solar panels in the world to heat the whole country.

@Ichiban Noodles I understand that some changes are easier than others. Electricity being easier than home heating. Here in not so cold Munich, I’m currently also heating with natural gas. I think I need to pester my landlord some more, so that I can switch to the nifty geothermal district heating system.

@Bernhard Schmalhofer Have you seen the carbon footprint that solar power leaves ? Also the pollution created to make lithium batteries. and then the garbage that’s left behind from these batteries ?

Ted shutting down comments about China is the height of hypocrisy. I suggest everyone unsubscribe if you believe in free speech.

    1) One billion humans alive today do not have access to electricity. 2) Powering our electric cars (like the one I drive) will require doubling our electric grid. So how are we gonna do this? She illustrates in her talk that wind and solar alone are not strong enough. But wind plus solar plus generation iv fission power is a powerful combination that can provide abundant energy for 8 billion humans on earth while eliminating fossil fuels. People who learn about generation iv fission power learn how we can CONSUME old nuclear waste and CONSUME nuclear weapons and produce affordable, sustainable power for a thousand years while we learn to do fusion power. Go ahead and hate on the old fashioned fission power that we still depend on today for most of our reliable carbon-free power today. Learn about LIFTR. Learn about Thorcon. Learn about Terra power. Tell our governments that when people invent safe clean fission power, they should be encouraged to build it. Wind and solar can do a lot, but not enough! Gen iv fission power is the essential ingredient. In combination these can provide the energy to be fair to all humans and also reverse the damage that oil companies are doing to our planet. There is hope! Cheers!
