The first pro board I ever got back when I was 12 or 13 was one of Tony’s signature Birdhouse boards. I was lucky enough to get it signed by him a year or so after I got it and I still have it hanging on the wall in my garage some 15 years later.

Couple of thoughts:
Tony Hawk is a true legend and a nice guy. He owes no one a thing but if you say hi to him in public he is really gracious.
Tony Hawk helped to define Gen X. How can people think of him as a boomer?
I remember when I first got into Tony Hawk Pro Skater. I got a sample Playstation disc with my pizza and it came with the first level and a couple of skaters. The next day I went out and bought the full version.
Those slip on Vans though. I love the smell of new Vans in the morning. Smells like…… victory.

The only skateboard I ever wanted was one of the first of yours. I thought the bird skull was the coolest thing ever seen as a brand. Unfortunately I never got any board and never learned to do a kickflip. The awful Nash I was given by a friend wouldn’t even roll two feet after a kick. Those were the good ole days 😀 Too old and broken now to even get near a board.

Easily one of my favorite parts of the past couple of years has been seeing a Tony Hawk resurgence in the public eye. Everything sucks until you see something involving him. I admit that I’m bias as I grew up playing the games as they came out (T.H.U.G. forever!). His face was everywhere and he was a huge part of my childhood but even as a thirty year old adult I find more reasons to admire and cherish him. Also the THPS games gave me my taste in music.

Tony’s one of the good ones, as far as I know. He could be a skate brand tycoon with all of the negative power in the industry, but instead he’s the first half of that descriptor and remains down to earth and supportive of the sport as a whole. He’s made some good money, often for relevant reasons and true gold-worthy investments in skating’s future (lookin atcha THPS) and it hasn’t really affected his public presence as a supportive dude. School me if you must.
