This feels like a propaganda piece trying to talk regular people out of buying gold so the wealthy can keep stacking it without competition and hoard it like dragons. Look, people have every right to own gold if they want to. It’s not some exclusive club and realize humans are a part of nature too.

    • @Silver_French

That’s exactly what it is. Much more of this is coming

Would you rather have clean air, clean water, clean soil and clean food, or have a shiny chain or bauble or trinket? What about your grandchildren? Choosing for them. If the elements that sustain life are too toxic to provide for life, the piles of gold will be worthless anyway.

    • @Silver_French

It has application in technology and industry, not just trinkets and baubles.

Ronald McDonalds wasn’t the first clown, but he was the first clowns we all knew 😀 McDonald’s is the story of living with piggy, all jumbled up in the small world we call LaMurika. For the whole lot Rip sails home to the mother land, which is: a) Spain b) Russia c) Africa d) all of the above ? Consult _your local_ farmer for the answer today. a [🐖]👉🤷

  11. @fnaticLoda

    October 30, 2025 at 12:55 pm

I don’t know why we should care about this. this can be solved locallly as it’s a bunch of greedy gold miners destroying their sourroundings. very odd timing and framing.

    • @AnnieB-v8j

      October 30, 2025 at 8:36 pm

China, US, Russia also mine gold, using large-scale devastating methods of water blasting and leaching with cyanide gas and chlorine in the process. The sluice ponds are often open and can rupture and poison lakes, rivers and aquifers. Wildlife and ecosystems can be destroyed. We all, all living beings, need clean air, clean water, clean food from healthy soil, in order to keep living.

    October 30, 2025 at 1:24 pm

you forgot to mention a very important issue. Why dont govt and ONGS try to limit the “manufature” of mergury and treat it like a drug and combat those who offer it as drug dealers. If gold miners cant get mercury the problem is strongly limited

      October 31, 2025 at 12:40 am

@AnnieB-v8j sure, let the ones with all the gold give it back.. or better yet the ones printing fiat currency ( central banks ) that allow for exponential growth of the top 1%… its not poor people driving the demand…

    • @AnnieB-v8j

      October 31, 2025 at 1:01 am

@CoPaVolvo Gold has many industrial uses, in technology (cell phones, circuit boards, semiconductors e.g.), electrical wiring and components, automotive, medical, dentistry and aerospace, including satellites. We are all driving the demand.

    • @CoPaVolvo

      October 31, 2025 at 9:28 am

@AnnieB-v8j that is not what is driving up the price.. the inflation of the dollar is.. maybe the rich who have aquired the most wealth in history over the last 5 years can worry about it….while the middle class has lost the most.. and the welfare class has been subverted against the middle class..

    • @AnnieB-v8j

      October 31, 2025 at 12:09 pm

@CoPaVolvo Divide and conquer. If the air, water and soil become too toxic to support life, even the rich will perish, and the gold will sit in gleaming piles.

  14. @3377ftw

    October 30, 2025 at 1:28 pm

Just so you all know, all Amazonian countries combined produce less gold then China does alone, every year. Add Canada, the US, Australia, and Russia and the Amazon is dwarfed.

    • @AnnieB-v8j

      October 30, 2025 at 8:21 pm

And even if the methods don’t use mercury, the landscapes can be devastated by water blasting and the other chemicals used are CYANIDE GAS and CHLORINE, which also leach into sluice ponds and poison wildlife and fresh water (ponds, lakes, streams, rivers and aquifers can all be affected). These chemicals move with the water system of evaporation, movement by wind, and eventual precipitation over wide areas.

  16. @empireofpeaches

    October 30, 2025 at 1:53 pm

One possible solution is having licenced government “toll” treatment plants. Makes it easier for artisanal miners to process gold in a safer manner.
Lots of issues to overcome to make this work, but it is worth trying to get the poisonous Hg out of the local environment.

  17. @elishaminor2900

    October 30, 2025 at 2:18 pm

I can recall the big scare when the discovery of Mercury dangers was found poison . Yet has so many other uses as a mineral for keep you temputure regulated in and individual home to paint checking the temputure in a human as well those little think that testing or periods of history develop.

As consumers, we must demand traceability and ethical sourcing, recognizing that a booming investment should not come at the expense of planetary health and human lives.

    • @homewall744

      October 30, 2025 at 8:45 pm

Silly. Gold can be melted and mixed and thus has no “trace” to follow.

    • @totvabe1

      October 31, 2025 at 3:31 am

@homewall744 While it is a challenge, gold can be traced. Certifications like Fairmined already exist to guarantee responsible sourcing, and technologies like blockchain allow its path to be traced from the mine. These certifications implement a ‘chain of custody,’ keeping the certified gold physically separate and documented at every step, from extraction to the jeweler. The final product receives a unique stamp or serial number, allowing the consumer to verify its provenance and compliance with ethical standards. Consumer demand for ethical sourcing is what drives the industry to adopt these systems.

  27. @starfleetau

This should be the hidden cost of buying gold from this one specific region/group. or the hidden cost of buying artisanal gold not just ‘Buying gold’ As it ignores how Gold is processed in countries like Australia etc.
Ted’s now apparently going on the click bait route..

  28. @lifemotivation6789

    October 31, 2025 at 7:07 am

This is a powerful reminder of a reality most people never see.
Behind the gold we wear, there can be forests destroyed, rivers poisoned, and entire communities harmed. Mercury pollution isn’t just a local issue — it spreads through the air, the water, and the food chain, reaching places as far as the Arctic.

What’s happening in Madre de Dios shows the true cost of “cheap” gold: lost ecosystems, toxic landscapes, and long-term health damage for humans and wildlife.

Nature is priceless — and once it’s gone, we can’t buy it back.

    • @martinesejour3361

      October 31, 2025 at 11:26 am

Why are humans often so slow to understand and, at times, seemingly foolish? While many claim they don’t want a “woke” society, being “awake” actually means recognizing the harmful impact of certain elements in our world and ecosystem and making progressive changes to reduce this impact.

    • @lifemotivation6789

      November 1, 2025 at 8:48 am

@martinesejour3361 You’re right — being ‘awake’ simply means being aware of the consequences of our choices and caring enough to act. Understanding the damage we’re causing isn’t weakness, it’s responsibility. The more people open their eyes to what’s happening to our ecosystems, the faster we can push for smarter decisions, cleaner practices, and a future we’re not ashamed to leave behind

These type of things can’t be fixed until the government does something about it. Sorry, but her noble cause is a lost cause and the Amazonians will end up killing themselves.

    November 1, 2025 at 5:25 am

What u are doing is good, but will they really have time to do as what you told to avoid touching mercury–time is money right? maybe they know mercury is bad but they don’t care or don’t have the time

  32. @okwatever3582

    November 1, 2025 at 6:42 pm

Can you convince me why governments around the world are still buying gold if there is such a big hidden cost?

The TED Idea Search wraps up in Amman, Jordan, in a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater and in front of a crowd of 4,000. What unfolds inside those stone walls is something the series hasn’t quite seen before: speakers shaped by the weight of living in a region the world tends to define for itself. From a mountaineer who turned grief into motivation to a therapist rewriting the Arab world’s language around mental health, the final city makes the strongest case yet that the best ideas can come from anywhere.

Watch the full talks from the TEDxAmman Idea Search:

The most interesting ideas often come from the most unexpected places. We searched the globe for ideas with the power to inspire, motivate and change lives — and we found them at @TEDx events around the world. The TED Idea Search follows extraordinary speakers from 9 countries competing for a spot on the TED main stage in Vancouver this April.
