No one will care, but southpaw is only more effective against orthodox because southpaw stance is an unfamiliar way to have your opponent positioned in front of you for an orthodox fighter. Southpaw is consistently negated by another southpaw, but they often look like really awkward fights, so are rare. So merely learning to fight in southpaw stance is a great way to neutralize another southpaw, because even if it’s unnatural for you, it’s at least unnatural for them too.

As I understand it, that whole “I’m a lethal weapon” warning has always been a myth fabricated by McDojos to pull people into classes. No country I’m aware of has ever had a law on the books stating you had to register or warn someone about being trained. That being said, if it works to deescalate the situation, roll with it.

1:33 This baffles me, to be honest. Basically, you’ve mastered self-defense, but you’re not allowed by the law to use it. Now, of course there are secondary benefits for mastering martial arts, like discipline and overall fitness, but if this law exists, it ruins the main purpose of it. In 8th grade, I had a green belt in taekwondo (I started late, I know) and a guy in another class had been mocking and bullying me all day long. Knee strike to the thigh, a right dollyo chagi to the back, a left one to the chest and that was it. I didn’t announce him, and I could’ve got in a lot of trouble, but the surveillance system showed the truth.

Also I think kickboxing is great! That being said anyone who wants to learn to fight but can’t immediately axe kick someone or otherwise isn’t flexible…take boxing. Boxing is such a good basic fighting style. You don’t have to be flexible.

Injuries are too common in martial arts. Ive learned over the years how to prevent alot of problems. Its mostly conditioning, acupuncture, and protecting yourself right. Condition what you use to strike with. Condition your body parts that receive hits. Thats why you see that shaolin monks have durable bodies on what they do. They can be kicked in the balls, spear handed on the neck, the back of their head is conditioned as well and gives an upper hand. All they need to protect is their eyes. Want to condition your shins or forearms? Roll beer bottles over your shin or forearms and it will create micro fractures and it will feel smoother

High ranking TKD practitioners are dangerous. Years ago a drunk high school kid came in with his friends to order some food in Hawaii. This kid got out of hand and the TKD instructor killed the kid with one kick! In Hawaii, this was big news and he got life without parole. Any martial art can be deadly in the mind of a lunatic. Live and learn kids. Agreed Scott “They Live” fight scene was brutal and I believe much of it was full contact.

Southpaw holds an advantage simply because only 10% of people are true southpaws. Those southpaws will fight 90% orthodox fighters, so they gain a natural advantage by seeing something 90% of the time, while orthodox fighters only see southpaws 10% of the time. It’s the same in baseball, especially at younger ages. In the Majors, they see enough lefties that right handed batters actually hold an advantage, and vice versa for left handed batters vs right handed pitchers. At younger ages, there are so few lefties that an average left handed pitcher can be extremely difficult to deal with for right handed batters, and vice versa.

His reply about shins is wrong. First its called conditioning or body hardening. I did it on 2X4s kicked the 3 1/2 inch side (yeah its not 4 inches a 2X4 is 1 1/2 inch by 3 1/2 inches) i kicked them a lot. It hurt a lot. Ill be honest i cried once a little bit. Eyes welled up with tears. Your nerves die and the done gets really dense and hard. I got to the point i could kick steel beams (tony ferguson style) as hard as i could. No pain no injury. I was ready to have a leathal leg kick. One of my plans was to kick the opponent shin with my shin.

Man I am so glad he’s finally getting some more attention and recognition after his role in Ip Man 4, it’s high time more people learned about Scott Adkins because he’s legitimately one of the best martial art actors and stuntmen out there and can bring a lot to the table in major action movies. I’d like to see him in the role of the main character in a major movie next time, he deserves it, I am tired of him getting sidelined to playing side-character roles with 2 or 3 lines and a single action scene. Hopefully this will change sometime soon.

The problem with southpaw is that it exposes your liver. In the regular orthodox, the right arm naturally covers the liver except when thrown. But in southpaw, the right arm becomes the jabbing arm, thus exposing the liver more.
