Forte cofounder and CEO Josh Williams does a deep dive on “Opportunities for Crypto and Gaming.” Williams explains that blockchain technology could have an even bigger impact on gaming than the internet because it’s not just connecting people, but potentially changing business models by aligning the incentives of developers and players. It can do this by allowing players to truly own the assets in games and verify their provenance, and by enabling developers to code rich incentive systems and rewards into games. By incorporating these mechanisms, Williams believes, an already exploding gaming industry will grow and create multi-billion-dollar marketplaces within games that will truly benefit players and developers.

I think there are a lot of parallels in gaming and crypto, the target market (predominantly male, 18-34, tech/digital enthusiasts) and the investment in time + money in a repetitive action to attain mastery. Great content and learning material! Really grateful that this is available to the community for free 🙏

Crypto gaming has got started getting adapted, I played on @BitcoincomGames & it’s really secure, fast & combining #BTC, blockchain& gaming by BCH is just awesome & in other hand cwv.io allow us built our own games, the real world virtual games where imagination is our limit!! Their so-called blockchain3.0 is the fastest secure & reliable chain I’ve known!!

Some good points. Specifically, players should absolutely own their in-game account & items. They invest their own time / effort / money into acquiring these assets. The only reason game developers argue they don’t own these items is because they are virtual. But I think society is coming around to the realization that virtual products and physical products are ultimately the same thing.

One critique I have here is the dismissal of third party websites and the gray market. This industry has evolved considerably through the past decade. There are highly-functional marketplaces, trustworthy websites & brands that have been in business for over 10 years. The idea that players are taking a big risk of being defrauded when using the gray market is completely false.

In fact, most of these websites are safer & more reliable than marketplaces like Amazon or Ebay. That is because the products being sold come exactly as described. When you buy 1000 Gold on WoW, there is no chance that the gold is counterfeit, or degraded. Meanwhile, when you buy a Nike T-Shirt on Amazon, there’s a chance that shirt is counterfeit, the color looks different than the picture, or the material/fit is not to your liking. The only way to truly know the physical product you are buying is to see it & touch it in person.

So while I look forward to the integration of crypto into gaming, I also must point out that the p2p markets for these games have progressed immensely already. A lot of the features you are describing already exist in efficient formats today. I think crypto integration in gaming needs to look beyond the low hanging fruit, which is tokenizing in-game assets.

Tokenization will simply amplify the bigger challenges in games today if they are not addressed first. These are bots, account hijacking, assisted gameplay & other exploits. Tokenizing in-game assets will make these exploits more lucrative and prevalent. It is my hope that blockchain finds a way to improve the integrity & security of these games, which will ultimately result in a much improved experience when the in-game assets are eventually tokenized.

Crypto in gaming is a fabulous innovative idea which has already been implemented in games.bitcoin.com where you could simply earn bitcoins by playing casual casino games such as blackjack, roulette, slots and many of their exciting games. It is extremely safe for deposit and withdraws as you can see in the video. There is also an event going on now names as Daily Drops and Wins which have a wonderful prize pool of over 2 million US dollars.

The inexorable mechanics are that games need micro-transactions, so that majority of players _can_ participate .. it follows that only cryptocurrencies with very low fees are viable in games – with a token like Nano you can actually have 100k players each pay 0.3333 USD to unlock a game feature or asset. You’ll get a much healthier game ecosystem this way – better for players, better for game developers.

As a game developer of a decade, I wholeheartedly am of the opinion: this is a grift.

They mentioned nothing of Diablo’s auction houses? Second Life? How Entropia Universe allows you to convert to USD? And Roblox has a currency exchange and item stock market?

How does the blockchain help at all?!

    • dBug404

      February 1, 2022 at 11:35 am

I am pretty sure, there will be SOME cool uses of the blockchain in the future of gaming.

But with every point i hear, i ask myself, why do i really need a blockchain for that. Most things already exists.
Sure there are points that are true, like you really have the ownership, even if the company closes. But what is the benefit in that? When the game closes you can imagine what items are worth you cant use anymore. Sure they could have a collection value, but i highly doubt that. So in the end, you are still dependent on the developer to run a successful game.

For me this sounds like a salespitch of things they are invested in. As a core gamer i always ask myself how does this benefit me and in there example, i only see things, that affects game design decisions in a bad way for the gamer. It’s like trying to convice some one why loot boxes are a good thing for gamers. They aren’t. They just exploiting human behaviour and greed to make more money. Sadly thats what most of the mobile/social games are all about.

Don’t get me wrong. I think blockchain is really cool. Usually its not about the tool, its about how you use it.

  42. Matthew Smeraglia

    December 31, 2021 at 3:28 pm

I mean i get many other situations where it’ll be useful and different than the current game model, but for what he says at 10:11, is that not what Dark Souls already does without any underlying blockchain? Maybe its just a poor example, but blockchain/smart contracts in this instance doesn’t seem worth the added complexity unless i am missing something. I mean I guess instead of just receiving additional points, you get actual tangible “currency” but if you can only spend that currency on things (similar to DLC or various game company “points” that we see today) then i guess im still confused on the appeal?

    • Inukai

      January 4, 2022 at 12:44 pm

Well yeah. Almost anything that is promised by crypto-bros can and even is implemented without it.

    • Wayne Balzan

      July 22, 2023 at 3:09 am

@Inukai today in game virtual currencies value are determined by the developer no the community, if virtual currencies/items are on chain you can go to an exchange sell/buy and players make the market for them.
