Greg Lukianoff says free speech belongs to everyone — or no one. Here’s why. #TEDTalks

“Too many people believe in something closer to freedom from speech rather than freedom of speech,” says attorney Greg Lukianoff. In a timely talk, he warns against the rise of “mob censorship” — and reminds us why free speech is the best check on power ever invented.

Sorry, I agree and disagree. It’s waaaay more complex than this. Study the cynefin framework: when you oversimplify a complex system you risk chaotic collapse of the system.

It’s naive to float free speech as “all speech is permissible.” Psychological warfare is very capable of destroying democracies if you don’t do something to bound the impacts of free speech.

    • @silver4067

      October 20, 2025 at 2:38 pm

Completely agree. Citizen’s United staying that Money and political donations can be considered free speech brought us exactly to where we are now in authoritarianism, all under the guise that “lobbying” (corruption), is legal under the 1st amendment

    • @carsonhunt4642

      October 20, 2025 at 4:08 pm

Your assumption mistakenly assumes that those controlling the speech aren’t corrupt or have ulterior motives.

He didn’t say “all speech is permissible” tho. It seems this links to a full length video. Maybe he’ll say something more in there than can be fit into this short?

Let’s start with: what free speech means?

  7. @OneMoreJames

The fascists LOVE this argument. MAGA voters agree with you.

    Odd that.

    • @phoenix81194

      October 21, 2025 at 1:43 am

Really? Last time I checked, MAGA was busy censoring journalists. Every party loves to tout “free speech” but only when it suits them…

    • @OneMoreJames

      October 21, 2025 at 4:17 am

@phoenix81194 Yes, that’s what they are *doing*, which is different from what they love to hear their opposition *saying*. Right?

I am having difficulty taking you seriously, since there’s no way you’ve missed all the times MAGA people have cheered/demanded their right to free speech. So I’m not sure why you disagreed with me, unless it was merely to agitate?

Whereas the Left has not censored. Please, show me the equivalence you speak of.

If you hadn’t pointed out the censoring of journalists, I’d think you were a MAGA troll.

      Really.

  10. @HarryGuit

    October 20, 2025 at 3:37 pm

While I agree with what he said, in the current situation we experience haters and agitators demanding the right to free speech so as to use it to incite violence. Fascists made bold use of language to promote their evil plans. They lied, they denigrated on groups of people and so had their sycophants commit atrocities. It could have been useful to know what they thought if they had used free speech in this environment where everybody knows he can utter any meaning. But evil people won‘t do that until they have won and forbid free speech.

    • @HarryGuit

      October 20, 2025 at 3:41 pm

We should be aware that free speech doesn’t mean free lies, free agitation to atrocities or racist acts, free defamation of individuals, groups or corporations. Here in Germany we learned our lesson. We defend free speech but we draw a line: agitation for fascism or violence is a crime.

    • @carsonhunt4642

      October 20, 2025 at 4:05 pm

How right you must be, when Americans wanted to dump the tea in the harbor , they should have been told not to agitate violence and be quiet and do nothing instead..

Now you realize exactly why they don’t allow fully free speech. Similar to when a kingdom decided to overthrow a king or dictator… what better solution than to not allow discussion of it? 😅

    • @markmuller7962

      October 21, 2025 at 4:56 am

True, in the same time you have the other side cancelling people for mondane reasons to push their ideology in the most violent way that’s possible on the internet.

      (Cough cough woke reddit cough)

Never forget tha censorship is part of all tyrannical regimes, including fascism

    • @HarryGuit

      October 21, 2025 at 2:52 pm

@markmuller7962How could I ever forget that? Needless to say.

  11. @BurtDavis

  12. @wischiiiiiiiiii93

Free speech ends where discrimination starts. Change my mind.

    • @wikingagresor

      October 20, 2025 at 8:18 pm

Speech can’t cause discrimination, only actions can. This is every tyrant’s excuse to grab power…

    • @phoenix81194

      October 21, 2025 at 1:39 am

Who are you to define discrimination? Is saying “biological men shouldn’t play on women’s teams” discrimination against trans people? Or is saying “trans women have every right to play on women’s teams” discrimination against cis women? When you have something as vague as “discrimination,” it’ll just shut down any and all meaningful discussion

    • @wischiiiiiiiiii93

      October 21, 2025 at 2:15 am

@wikingagresor speaking is a form of action. Also speech creates a narrative of how the world should be. When I say free speech ends where discrimination starts. I basically mean: yea sure you can raise your concerns but if your arguments are as thin as paper and you still choose to stick to your anti human bullshit then you have no right to cry when the same thing happens to you.

    • @phoenix81194

      October 21, 2025 at 2:58 am

@wischiiiiiiiiii93Isn’t that the principle of free speech though? You won’t suffer from *legal* ramifications for most speech, but the law won’t protect you from the social consequences

    • @wischiiiiiiiiii93

      October 21, 2025 at 3:03 am

@phoenix81194 I claimed nothing else. I differentiate between free speech and raising concerns and active verbal discrimination. Never said anything else

  13. @sykessaul123

    October 20, 2025 at 6:47 pm

Words can be used violently though. It’s why verbal abuse is a term and in some cases can be as bad as physical abuse from the damage it does.

Free speech ends where other’s rights to be free from harassment and discrimination begin. Also, right to say what you want doesn’t give you the right to manipulate people on mass using misinformation, disinformation and psychological manipulation. Talking someone into killing or brutalising someone else still makes you liable to prosecution on conspiracy to commit those crimes, for good reason.

To oversimplify the free speech discussion and try and flatten it into black and white when in reality there are many grey areas, is not only idiotic, it’s dangerous.

    • @phoenix81194

      October 21, 2025 at 1:41 am

UK Australia, private websites and communities with no oversight moderation, propaganda and corporate/private have ruined speech and information.

Work as State chairman of a nonprofit that works with FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights and Expression) and they absolutely rock! They have stopped a lot of colleges from stopping freedom of speech through unconstitutional means.

  19. @monikadeinbeck4760

    October 21, 2025 at 6:35 am

some people have more free speach than others. rich people who own media outlets for instance can make their opinions be spread in such abundance it appears to be mainstream, when in reality it is only the opinion of one person.
Also insulting speech is discriminating, because it makes sensitive people withdraw from the conversation and be silenced. You can hurt with words, and if you do not regulate that, the rule of the jungle applies. Yes, logically thinking these words only give information about the speaker, but we are no robots.

  20. @Jackie777

    October 21, 2025 at 6:47 am

Freedom of speech just means freedom to express your thoughts without being persecuted by the government.
Freedom of speech does not mean freedom of consequences. If you say something mean, the other person will NOT violate your rights by punching you in the face.

I believe that the Tolerance paradox must be used. The paradox of tolerance, articulated by Karl Popper, is the concept that a society’s tolerance must be unlimited to be truly tolerant. Still, unlimited tolerance could lead to its destruction by intolerant forces. The paradox suggests that a tolerant society must be intolerant of intolerance to survive.

Examples in today’s society are hate speech laws. The paradox is often used to justify laws against hate speech, as it argues that allowing speech that promotes hatred and violence undermines the tolerance of the society that permits it.

We should not subject the vulnerable/minority groups to slurs. It is possible to express oneself without harming others in the process. If you can not express yourself without harming others, you should remain quiet.

The TED Idea Search wraps up in Amman, Jordan, in a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater and in front of a crowd of 4,000. What unfolds inside those stone walls is something the series hasn’t quite seen before: speakers shaped by the weight of living in a region the world tends to define for itself. From a mountaineer who turned grief into motivation to a therapist rewriting the Arab world’s language around mental health, the final city makes the strongest case yet that the best ideas can come from anywhere.

The most interesting ideas often come from the most unexpected places. We searched the globe for ideas with the power to inspire, motivate and change lives — and we found them at @TEDx events around the world. The TED Idea Search follows extraordinary speakers from 9 countries competing for a spot on the TED main stage in Vancouver this April.
