Lots of people with ADHD jiggle their legs; lots if autistic people look at lips instead of people’s eyes. I advise you to learn more about psychology.

8:43 see this is why I barely talk to people, I always keep it short and I don’t approach people. I don’t like making people feel stuck in a conversation.

When I take my glasses off during an intense conversation it’s usually to make myself blind so I focus more on my thoughts. Like turning down the volume to see better.

One thing about the hello gestures. Where I live we have many differents nods and waves. Sometimes I unconsciously use different ones for different people, but whenever the other person doesn’t do the same movement as me, for example, they wave and I nod, it feels like I disrespected(?) their salute in some way. Or, vice versa, if they just give me a nod and I wave I feel like I acted over excited to see them. So yeah, I’m wondering why now.

I don’t think the question about autism was answered sufficiently. I’m neurodivergent myself, adhd, autism, and anxiety, but most people would not see or notice that unless I told them. But, what does happen is my body language and vocal tone often could be read as “oh, that’s a lying tell” when it’s not. For example, I constantly have random thoughts and connections running through my head, and my body language is often three or four steps ahead of what my mouth is saying, so it looks like asynchronicity (a lying tell) when it’s actually not, it’s synced up with my thoughts which are going much faster than my mouth is. One notable thing, adjacent to this, that got me into trouble was I was caught in an uncomfortable situation and let out a nervous laugh (nothing flamboyant… just like a “heh heh…”) and was chastised for “making light” of the situation. This bothered me because I thought that certainly they know what nervous laughing is… but apparently mine doesn’t sound that way… or something? So yea, what I think he should answer here is how do you make sure someone like me doesn’t get falsely accused based on criteria used for neurotypical people?

My dad would always stare directly at me while speaking and I would get nervous and begin looking away or would start to fidget- one day he called me out on it, and ever since then, I’ve honed my skills of eyecontact out of pure unadulterated spite.

  58. Splotch the Cat-Thing

    July 2, 2021 at 11:12 pm

If eye contact intimidates the crap out of you, it’s probably because you’re a really cat in a human costume, and nobody told you.
‘Cause, you see, it’s a natural instinct for a cat, to feel threatened when somebody’s staring at them like a hunter. Being a natural hunter yourself, you fully understand that it means they want to eat you.

If you turn out to be a particularly small cat, that might mean you’re standing on another cat’s shoulders under the trenchcoat.

  59. Sam McKinlay

    July 2, 2021 at 11:26 pm

Irish and Scottish folk have a tried and tested phrase for ending conversations: “I’ll let you go now”
At no point did the other person say they had to go, however by instigating the exit with this phrase implies you are concerned with taking up too much of the other person’s time.

  60. Joanna Bulik

    July 2, 2021 at 11:32 pm

So disappointed he didn’t mention the “triangle” method when wanting to leave a conversation. Basically you look at the mouth then one eye and then the other eye. Keep repeating until conversation subsides 🙂 subconsciously the person will pick up that you want out.

These are things that can be learned, just like he has, and once its understood how the interviewer is going to interpret “body language” it can be used to “lie” or mislead the same as words can. There are studies and classes on these types things and once learned it is something that can benefit individuals on both sides of the interview.

The FBI and the CIA are absolute clowns. They are not cool nor smart. They’re basically the same level of dipshit that you get at the DMV except worse because they’ve been profiled and recruited based on their level of potential psychological manipulation.

I don’t mind eye contact. It lets me know they’re listening to what I’m saying, and vice versa, I want them to know that I’m giving them my full attention. I’ve noticed a lot over the years however, that people tend to look away a lot while speaking. If I’m talking to someone, and they look away, I try to look away a few times during the conversation so they don’t feel so awkward. If they don’t look away, I don’t either. I will admit however, that once at a job, I had a higher up tell me it made them uncomfortable. I made sure to make as much eye contact as possible 😂 To be fair, they made lots of other people uncomfortable, so I figured they needed a taste of their own medicine 😬

I take my glasses off during an interview and such because I’m focused on doing a decent job amd forget that im nearsighted and don’t need them any more. I just take my case out of my purse, open it, take off the glasses, gently close it and put them back in my purse so I don’t forget them. I’m mostly just trying to prevent losing them and avoiding giving myself a headache because they fit snug.

Turns out it was a bit of a pet idea of the Head.

Some time later, two members of staff were dismissed in separate, unrelated incidents of inappropriate behaviour with pupils. Obviously the eye contact method failed in their recruitment.

I literally look everyone I pass’ face to read their intentions, state of mind, and to register my surroundings in detail, down to the person. If I make eye contact I soften my stare but I don’t turn away. If someone stares back I assume they’re doing the same. It’s also pretty interesting to note, that when I pass people and turn around, a lot of them have turned around to look at me too.

Absolutely I love it. The sign of dominance is a sign of power. It’s a sign of I don’t give a crap what you say and I see through what you’re trying to tell me you liar.

I intimidate many. I don’t care. I walk with confidence. I look directly in your eyes when I speak to you. And trust me I am reading you I can read you very well by your mannerisms as well as by your energy.

If I intimidate you good. Am I sorry, no. Are you weak, yes.

Do I consider myself an apex, yes.

Some people are just born with certain traits. Some are born to be leaders. Some are born to be followers. Can you learn these different traits, yes but can you follow them through with your energy and your stance and your mannerisms? It’s a lot to accomplish. But can be done.

Yeah it comes to second nature for those of us that are the Apex.

I truly believe it falls in line with intelligence. As well as those that are gifted. It’s not wrong or bad for one to be one or the other.
    It’s just who You are.

Related to cultural differences a huge interesting difference can be seen between East Asia and North America/Western Europe. In the west people tend to look at the mouth/lower face to read emotions, and in East Asia people tend to look at the eyes/upper face. This can also be seen in the differences in emojis! Western emojis also tend to have the biggest variation in the mouth vs East Asian emojis tend to have the variation in the eyes.

You have no idea how many people get glasses that are too tight fitting, or even have the wrong prescription. And since glasses are expensive, and most companies don’t offer returns (some offer you the opportunity to change for a different frame for a fee) you’re just kind of stuck.

Is it just me or is his example with eye contact and apes not a question of, intimidation by the dominance hierarchy and or your superior/person capable of violence rather than an unaware subconscious intimidation of which is a product of the “too intense” eye contact?

  248. Nick Carter

    July 12, 2021 at 11:42 am

As a person with Asperger’s/PDD-NOS I’ve made this observation about my own body language: I have the same nervous tics as ‘neurotypical’ people (pacifying behaviors, eyes wandering down/away during conversation), but they’re so prevalent and numerous that it doesn’t take an FBI agent to notice them. I believe people should view Autism Spectrum Disorders as a set of observed behaviors, not personality disorders. The social contact is usually more disconcerting for other people than the Aspie themself: we’d be fine if people could just accept us as-is.

A friends 16 yo child was tackled by a cop and sentenced to juvie for “cracking his knuckles”, the cop took it as a “preparation to fight with the officer”.

The problem the Terry v Ohio precedent is that the cops have since trained themselves to exploit meaningless gestures or habitual behaviors as “threatening”.

That precedent must be challenged, because that child has had arthritis since infancy and pops his knuckles constantly for pressure relief.

2:03 I think the actual answer to this question is that the interviewer is likely wearing reading glasses. Removing them could be either to signal that they are done looking at the document for now or to remove them so they aren’t a distraction to either party.

Another possibility is that the act of removing their glasses allows the person to exercise control over their environment, thus just removing the glasses might be an adapter in itself.

I liked Joe’s explanations too though.

When someone overuses eye contact I think it’s creepy, or the person is manipulative. But it doesn’t intimidate me. I think it’s more irritating. Is that a common thing? I get equally irritated when people avoid eye contact. Both come off to me as disingenuous.

Glad you pointed out that what’s behind the camera plays a role in the person in question’s body language.
Also, I wonder if some reasons “they” don’t usually teach body language in school is because: 1) They don’t want everyone to be able to read body language. 2) They don’t want everyone manipulating their own body language. 3) Many teachers wouldn’t be as knowledgeable and expressive as this ^ guy, and could be putting incorrect information out there.
Some criminology or psychology classes might offer a bit of this.
    Anyway, I love this guy

Eye contact never made sense to me. In fact I think it’s much more appropriate to not stare into peoples eyes. I respect peoples privacy. I don’t believe anyone is hiding anything. A lot of people are insecure about eyes. If they’re symmetrical or not, lazy eye, cross eyed. Because that’s what goes through my mind. It’ll never be a sign of dominance either. Try looking at a certain dog in the eye for too long and he’ll come biting your neck off.

I don’t know how I feel about teaching body language because body language is a natural thing we all do and its a more authentic expression of our confidence and interest, so if you teach people certain things they could lead a life of manipulation. I understand there are certain situations where you might want to manipulate like a job interview, but in general I don’t know how much people could keep it up.

I keep on hearing about Asian’s getting verbally or physically abused on social media and the news, but I just don’t see the evidence. Not saying it doesn’t happen, but this so called rise in violence towards the Asian people seems to be more political BS. Well it’s not like my opinion matters anyways because I’m a white straight male who also likes nerd culture like Anime. Where is the eye contact question?

Many years ago I worked in an office as an intern and I was in a not so happy time of my life. One day one of the partners of that firm, an old guy, came near me and said “Dear, you always smile but you are not really happy. The sides of your eyes never wrinkle when you smile.” I was shocked and said everything was ok but he was sooo right. I thought i was fooling everyone including myself. 🙂

I take off my glasses to make more intimate eye contact when trying to ignite conflict. Works well.
