“If you can’t respect the basic fundamental underlying principles with which we order society — which is ‘Do not steal’ — then what are you left with?” asks investigative journalist Carole Cadwalladr. Following her TED2025 talk, Cadwalladr is in conversation with Chris Anderson, head of TED, to warn about surveillance fascism. What happens when big Silicon Valley companies take over communication platforms and weaponize intellectual property against you? She suggests that when you feel powerless, it’s often actually because you are powerful — and explores why it’s so important to fight information chaos by supporting independent media and journalists. (Recorded at TED2025 on April 9, 2025)

Carole Cadwalladr discusses the dangers of big tech companies aligning with autocratic governments, arguing that data extraction and lawlessness in Silicon Valley are enabling surveillance fascism. She emphasizes the importance of respecting intellectual property and supporting independent media to combat information chaos.

I went from $176,000 in debt with zero savings or retirement to over $1M net worth. Long-term investors know that the market and economy will eventually recover, and investors should be prepared for this growth. I earned $1,680,000 in Bitcoin before the market crash, and now I’m buying more Bitcoin and gradually increasing my investments. I’m especially grateful to Adviser Marc Andrew Zabicki, for his expertise and exposure to different areas of the market.

The difficulty given the current market mentality, is determining when to buy or sell , which is quite easy for professionals. My portfolio has grown to $2,240,000. thanks to diversification and portfolio restructuring using growth companies, S&P 500, and quality ETFs. Entry and exit orders are chosen by my advisor.

    Complete weakness in your coup
The heads of tech have similar ideologies and seemed to align cohesive through human morals
    Example … stopped wasted spending
    Stopped illegal immigrants
    Stopping child stealing
    Bringing jobs to manufacture
How do people like this come up with ideas when the evidence is clear they are all using data for variety of reasons… having no faith in humanity based their own personal values

Here’s the deal….. silicon valley was in bed with Biden. Silicon valley was in bed with Obama… claiming this is new with the trump admin is gaslighting at best…. Look at how Zuckerberg changed his attitude as soon as trump took office. Do you really think trump gave him a call and made him? No. Zuckerberg talks out the side of his neck and changes based on his need to be accepted by the new admin. Zuckerberg lost tons of money under Obama and Biden… money is a motivator.

Passing the law that is unfriendly to the big techs nowadays is harder than before, after they have put in big money into lobbyists and become the funding backbone of the regulation hating cult that is in power. So the answer is no right now. We may have a shot in 2028 but even that depends on if people start to wake up before then.

People from Silicon Valley quite literally live in another reality—and that’s the real danger many parts of the world are currently experiencing. To be fair, I’ll give some credit to Chris for having this public conversation (I’m not sure if it’s because of her last talk or her most recent Observer column), but when faced with facts and undeniable hard truths, these guys show a complete lack of understanding of the impact technology is having on democracy and the economy. It’s frustrating how naive their arguments are in response to the chaos we’re living through.

Excellent talk. Interesting interviewee. My criticism is her inability to distinguish between digital content open to all online vs content behind paywalls. One is free for all to read and learn from with no charge, the other requires payment of a fee in order to access the content. She, like so many critics of AI practices, just repeated her mantra instead of replying to the host’s critique. The repetition annoyed me. She has no substantive response, and she needs one if we as a society are to make any headway in holding the broligarchs of America to some sort of restraint or set of rules. They won’t be held to any moral norms by the current administration, sadly. It seems to me that she is quite comfortable making accusations and charges, basing it on the other people who are making those charges.

The world could easily become more democratic as tech evolves. Capitalism however will not be able to survive in a post scarcity economy where energy costs approach zero. Once you remove the inequality and uneven distribution of production and resources there is no need for the predatory capitalism we struggle under today. We are seeing early signs of the unraveling today in the extreme funneling of wealth into fewer and fewer hands. It is their last chance to cling on to power before the great shift occurs in many cases ironically due to the very technologies the ultra rich are currently developing and profiting from. Zero energy costs mean zero production costs. Every time a society has found itself in a position to reduce its resource needs and increased its leisure time art has been what humaity turns to in its eternal quest for meaning. From cave paintings in the abundant south of France to the Intricate totem poles in Haida villages of the western Canadian coast where salmon is plentiful we see this proclivity towards art as a kind of currency when our energy and resource needs are met.

Great discussion. On the point of data theft, I’d like to point out that th crackdown on filesharing platforms made the point that it is theft. If we accept big tech stealing data then we should stop prosecuting file sharing platforms and server owners. Big tech can’t be above the laws we have to follow.

    • @lynnxe

      April 26, 2025 at 4:25 pm

I’m with you on the first part because of the law that was enforced on behalf of large corporations against consumers. I’m not sure tearing down the laws gets us to a better place though – it would be better I think if the existing laws were updated but more importantly, enforced.

  65. @andrewhorton481

    April 26, 2025 at 4:48 am

I think there was something missing from the analysis of why the tech bros were able to be held hostage by Trump. Assuming they did weigh up, individually or collectively, their stance when faced with autocratic threats what motivated them? I think it’s pretty clear that they towed the line because their priority is feeding their own hubris cycles…they didn’t want to risk any zeros on their bank balances, or risk losing power. If it’s true that Trump needs them, they had the ability and the means to protect democracy and they chose not to. Because when do the rich and powerful ever really risk anything? If it comes down to it, it will be poor and vulnerable people that will have to shed blood to protect the world from tyranny, and these ghouls will make billions in the course and the aftermath of that bloodshed. Their cowardice and complicity needs more examination and exposure here. They hold open Pandora’s box but take no responsibility for the evils it unleashes.

Carole Cadwalladr is right in saying that a Big Tech coup d’état has taken place in US. But she is wrong on one point: this is nothing new in the US. After all, the first coup d’état was carried out in the US by bankers at the end of the 19th century and it came to an end with the 1929 crisis. After the destruction of the bankers’ private power structure, the US began to be governed by a new coup d’état led by the business-as-usual cartel of oil companies and arms manufacturers. Big Tech emerged and grew in the environment created by the neoliberal state of exception, but they became so rich and politically powerful that they decided to rule everything and everyone in the US. To do so, they were forced to push the oil companies to the margins of power and grab part of the military budget that was enjoyed only by arms manufacturers (military hardware). In the US, there has been no room for politics for over a century, because the power of money has always prevailed in one way or another. It suffered some restriction during the period of Franklin Delano Roosevelt and that is all.

The way this man keeps going back to “compensation” as though that somehow resolved the problem, without ever touching on the notion of CONSENT. If someone steals your car, them paying you a fraction of the value after the fact is not actually justice nor fair. The IP was deliberately stolen with the intent to steal it and “get around copyright” in their own words – in a court of law, intent matters. No one should be forced to accept theft because others see it as beneficial to get to use what has been stolen.

The point is that that we don’t actually have a choice whether or not to agree to the terms data thieves make us agree to while at the same time saying we need AI (or A1 depending on your age bracket) in schools because anyone who doesn’t learn AI will be swept into a trash can labeled irrelevant 17:25

How about tech companies get regulated to make sure they aren’t manipulating us first, then we can talk. If these inherently virtuous tech companies are doing it anyway then what’s the problem? 19:18

We lack the global values to attend this issue. Values conversations regarding AI and information property are essential.

When Chris Anderson suggested that AI is more important than the political decisions being made he lost a lot of respect from me. How utterly naive. Confess you don’t understand the world. He is desperately trying to justify his worldview while not really getting what’s she’s saying at all.

Does this man have investments in AI? He sure talks like it. Acting as if AI didn’t get to this point by literally stealing the copywritten works of everyone without their consent. If you and I had started ANY business doing that we would be in jail

Close, the Tech Bro’s captured the US Government. The Bro’s are running the show. The need a autocracy rule on place to control everything.

Chris Anderson is a total fool and has no clue about this topic clearly.

Why are you wasting Carole and our time talking complete nonsense to someone who is as switched on as Carole?

26:37 the fascinating part of this whole exchange is how the tech companies would absolutely lose their minds if you turned the argument around.

If they get to scrape everything that everyone has ever created, with no credit, permission, or compensation, then it’s open season on all IP.

Go ahead and torrent those movies, music, books, and software. Download a car. It’s all out there, so it’s completely free for anyone to take, right?

The Experiment That Tried to Weigh the Human Soul

It’s a little complicated to weigh a dying person on a hospital bed, but that didn’t deter Duncan MacDougall.
