Growing up in the public eye, multi-hyphenate creator Bryce Dallas Howard experienced the familiar pressure to share her life with the world on social media. But with her mother’s steadfast guidance, Howard learned to set personal boundaries and savor the beauty of private moments. In this personal talk, she draws on three generations of family wisdom to remind us that “a private life makes a public life worth living.”

Confidence comes by having “Wealth and Privilege” because if all else fails you can always fall back on those two. Also a vast majority of the Elite families of America’s past forgone “Coddling” and many of those people turned out to be chaotic and have no heart later in life.

We are already under the eye on personal information that has to be shared that limits from trying to own a starter house (which is now unattainable) and not able to afford rent for a one bedroom apartment (which is becoming more unattainable).

Unless you own a home behind a Gated Community with 24 hour Security with enough funds to hire a legal firm to protect your personal information, you won’t be able to protect yourself.

Richy Cunningham may of been a joke, but in our new “smaller community” thanks to the internet, the rest of us wouldn’t mind being described by that name if it came to being able to live a comfortable life away from worry…we already “are sitting on it” and it’s hurting the rest of us.

Someone can learn something from the experience that other people shared… Don’t to much live in private… It seems annoying…

8:01 Wait– WHY is opting out supposedly “not the answer”? I don’t accept that. This stuff is bad for our health. “Meta” executives don’t let their OWN CHILDREN use their products. You later ask “why” post, or “what is the purpose?” The answer is– there’s no good reason. It’s just attention-seeking. We don’t need it. Everyday non-famous people should connect with their own local communities. That’s where we need the most connection for a better society.

Well, I think you missed the point.
Try telling a kid that you cant start a youtube channel because of this complicated reason. First of all, they wouldnt understand this reason and rather think of this as an attack. A restriction. Its like you are imprisoning that kid. You might think it is exaggerated, but that is how kids think. Not only that, you would only force the kid to hide the fact that he started a channel without telling you. That would definitely create trust issues.

Great presentation Bryce. A fine example of how to speak clearly and concise. I live an exemptionally private life. And enjoy every single day and not taking advantage of the oxygen I breathe. People have become obsessed with sharing every detail of themselves. And thus, nothing seems rare or surprising these days. Everything is instantly shared. Obsessive amounts of selfies shared online. For what purpose? I’m thankful I live a peaceful and joyful life. I like modern technology. When it’s used appropriately.

I had a wide grin when she said “two day delay”,
remembering how for most of my 11yr+ “youtuber” life (as of 2022), .. I have followed at least ” 1 YEAR DELAY “.
As in, I scroll back on my phone, and post memories from last year .. if and when I can remember them.
The social network gets to hear about my trips years after I’ve travelled, and by then have moved on to other interesting things.
It has been very ‘counter-productive’ when you think from a “youtuber” perspective (since almost everyone seems to wanna blow up),
but very very sensible thing to do, to actually LIVE a wonderful life & for Inner Peace.

Whether we spend that time focused on what pushes us apart? 🤔

    or
whether we commit ourselves to an effort — a sustained effort — to find common ground,

🤔to focus on the future we seek for our children? 🤔

and to respect the dignity of all human beings?🤔.

It’s easier to start wars than to end them.

It’s easier to blame others than to look inward.

It’s easier to see what is different about someone than to find the things we share.

But we should choose the right path,
    not just the easy path.

    Thank you.

Great story telling, insight and food for thought while raising a teen myself with very limited social media. What gets me, actually crosses boundaries, when others choose to post photos without permission on social media. Wish they would ask permission before posting (rather than me reminding them not to) in addition to following the 48 hour rule. Great advice!

I don’t *have* a “life”. Just an existence. 🙂 I work on my series, and that’s about it. In all honesty, I’m GLAD no one calls me, talks to me, bothers me, nor follows me. I’d like my last few years on Earth to be devoid of as much human contact and interaction as is possible, and I’m mostly already there.

I remember while l was listening to her a piece of story from ‘And The Rock Cried Out’ by Ray Bradbury

‘Do you read the papers? Of course, you do. But do you read them as I read them? I rather doubt that you have come upon my system. No, it was not exactly myself that came upon it; the system was forced upon me. But now I know what a clever thing it has turned out to be. I always get the news- papers a week late. All of us, those who are interested, get the papers a week late, from the Capital. And this circumstance makes for a man being a clear-thinking man. You are very careful with your thinking when you pick up a week-old paper.’

‘Well,’ said the old man, ‘I remember once, when I lived in the Capital for a month and bought the paper fresh each day, I went wild with love, anger, irritation, frustration; all of the passions boiled in me. I was young. I exploded at everything I saw. But then I saw what I was doing, I was believing what I read. Have you noticed? You believe a paper printed on the very day you buy it? This has happened but only an hour ago, you think! It must be true.’ He shook his head. ‘So I learned to stand back away and let the paper age and mellow. Back here, in Colonia, I saw the headlines diminish to nothing. The week-old paper — why you can spit on it if you wish. It is like a woman you once loved, but you now see, a few days later, she is not quite what you thought. She has rather a plain face. She is no deeper than a cup of water.’

AI is shaping every aspect of our lives — but only a handful of tech giants have a say in what this technology can do. So what’s going on with world governments? Bilawal Sidhu, host of “The TED AI Show,” sits down with geopolitical expert Ian Bremmer to unpack the UN’s just-released plan for “Governing AI for Humanity,” a report that focuses on the urgent need to guide AI towards helping everyone thrive, rather than just the powerful few. Together, they explore the complexities of AI’s rapid growth on a worldwide scale and take a clear-eyed look at the pivotal decisions facing us in the very near future. (Recorded at The TED AI Show on September 10, 2024 )
