About time we can fix our own iPhone but they still have a hold on us by getting us to ring to configure iPhone lol ????

Helpful video. You should highlight that you need to have at least 2000 bucks on your credit card if you want to do it yourself. SMH

      Not true.
Only if you want to use their tools. You are free to use your own once you have the parts.

most people don’t have the time nor patience, but those who want should have the right to repair their phone

Most people don’t constantly drop their phone either, or at least I hope not. I have been buying them since iPhone 4, never dropped a phone, or had to repair one, ever.

This whole programme is really interesting. It shows thought that apple just wants you to give your iPhone to them to get it fixed (price wise).

An 80 page repair guide, playing where”s waldo with the code, a 1200 dollar hold, and making sure that the customer knows that replacing the screen at the apple store is cheaper (129 vs 179 doing it yourself), and contacting the repair team for system configuration. Yes apple now allows people to fix there phones but the company really is doing everything it can to discourage people from doing so.

If Apple truly cared about the *environment* and the *consumer* , they would have approached things very differently:

    1. Devices need to be repairable by design and if possible upgradable as well.
    2. Parts need to be affordable and accessible.

They clearly don’t care, and they obviously designed their self repair program to be as unattractive as possible.
If Apple ever mentions sustainability in any way, it’s greenwashing…

The manual does not say how to use the tools in the kit like that suction thingy for the screen? 76 page they could have at least illustration on how to use these things

Instead of supporting the professional mechanics
Apple just turned a proffesional tech reviewer or anchor into an amateur mechanic…
Well indirectly Apple turned us all into brainless monkeys…
    Hatsoff for your strategy apple…
Your pricing is not economical to actually opt for self repair..
Apple single handedly killed right to repair and its advocates with a single bulletp

How in the world is this guy, or CNET for that matter, not criticizing Apple more for the convoluted hoops they designed to purposefully discourage people from repairing products themselves? Can only repair from iPhone 12 onward. The hold on your card. The cost of DIY with this equipment vs. taking it in. What a joke.

    • Tech4now

      June 2, 2022 at 1:46 pm

What exactly is your point? You aren’t required to rent the tools. The program starts with iPhone 12 and could be expanded. It’s got to start from somewhere.

    • CO

      June 2, 2022 at 7:41 pm

@Tech4now It’s not just the tools. The pricing for parts is just laughable and you have to contact Apple to be able to complete the repair. That’s ridiculous. They also started the program with the most recent models of iPhone when there are a lot of users trying to fix their older phones which are more likely to have issues. It’s not “starting somewhere”, it’s non-sensical. They have those parts and equipment because they still sell the SE, which shares with previous models of the same form factor. The program is a joke.

I’ve dropped my Android phone so many times that I’m now getting this small but growing black line on my screen that you can tell is a digital error.
Does anybody know if this thing is going to keep on growing until it wipes out such a large part of my screen that I’m going to have to throw my phone away or get it repaired?
I know this is an iPhone video but thanks in advance for any help with this Samsung J7 Sky Pro related problem.

That‘s weird! The iPhone 12 and 13 generation Tool Kits do also come with a separate box including a heated display removal fixture and pocket. For the same rental price.

It’s a step forward in the right direction, but there’s so many unnecessary parts and fees that would sway the average consumer to just send it in to Apple.
