VR for Your Car: I Tried Holoride and It Surprised Me

Holoride is now launching VR games to be played in cars, selling its first VR packages to work in Audi vehicles. Bridget Carey took it for a test drive in New York City, where the game reacts to drivers’ actions in real time to help avoid motion sickness. Is this the future of backseat entertainment?…

ehhh audi has a lot of gimicky software in their cars and have yet to implement any app support for spotify or other 3rd party streaming services. think they should focus on making their car experience more seamless then focusing on gimmicky software…. i digress its a cool concept but I doubt audi will maintain or even fix bugs that arise given my experience owning and dealing with audis.

From what I remember one of the reasons for motion sickness is because the motion detected by your inner ear does not match what your eye’s are seeing, such as looking at a book or a phone. (Way back when, before vehicles, etc…, when this happened it was probably from eating something toxic or poison , so throwing up way a to get ride of whatever it was). Since the VR is matching the car movement to what you’re seeing, it makes sense that it might actually help for people who normally get motion sickness. However, I’m surprised the lag from bluetooth is not an issue.

Audi pronunciation should rhyme with howdy. Good job otherwise. Thanks for taking one for the team. Now I know I would never want this.

I cant see this product taking off, far too niche and expensive to get proper developer and customer buy in beyond the super wealthy. Will be a 5min novelty for most users.

You’re supposed to be driving. Not playing games while behind a 2 ton vehicle. I interpret any person who is wearing this is clueless about their surroundings.

Another subscription aside, people don’t want to have their full FOV overtaken while riding in an Uber or the backseat of someone’s car. This is a solution to a problem nobody had.

7:26 that floating screen mode could be great for when you want to get some work done

just looking at a phone or laptop screen gets most people nauseous, because when you are looking down in a car you don’t really see much outside and don’t get the sense of movement, but your body experiences it, which makes you nauseous
seeing stuff move directly next to the virtual screen probably gives the brain those queues of movement and you’ll don’t get sick as quick 🤔

This is funny, because my kid will take meta quest on a road trip, and link it to his phone hotspot. Most road trips arent inside the city anyways, but on long stretches of highway. So, not sure how valuable a specific headset is that much of an advantage.
