YouTube TV finally has everything I need to cut the cord

Recent changes to YouTube TV have left it with more content, but at a higher price. CNET’s Logan Moy ran the math to see if its new offerings were enough for him to finally give up cable television.

Thanks for watching! What’s your favorite live TV service, and why?

    • Steven McSteveington

      July 2, 2020 at 10:10 pm

YoutubeTV is still my favorite despite the price hike, it added enough content to worth it to me, and the nice interface, unlimited dvr, and it has premium channels I look for (take notes Slingtv and Fubotv) best value on the market, full stop

      July 2, 2020 at 10:45 pm

      @Steven McSteveington Agreed! 👍

Philo for me is great. Cheap, has the channels that I enjoy, unlimited DVR, and great customer support if needed.

I don’t care too much for live tv. I am happier with the less expensive and higher video and audio quality of VOD services from Netflix, Amazon Prime, AppleTV+, Disney+, and normal HULU without the live. Besides I question what’s the point of paying higher prices for live channels if I would end up DVRing most of them? 🤔 I get news from a roof antenna. (before anyone says it, yeah I know not everyone can get an over the air antenna – but I can though)

I had YouTube TV and loved it. I switched to Hulu Live because I wanted the Disney Plus ESPN bundle. I think YT has a much better interface but other than that I like them both equally. They are the only 2 that have most sports channels as well which was very important.

      July 3, 2020 at 2:26 pm

channelname1111 yea, that’s what was on at the time. the lines looked crisp, the colors vibrant, and the audio sounded dynamic. Watched a lot of live action stuff that night too and it didn’t change my opinion.

      July 3, 2020 at 2:50 pm

I cancelled Youtube TV and switch to Sling TV Blue $30. As for now, SlingTV is my favorite because offers what we want & price!!!!!

    • Steven McSteveington

      July 3, 2020 at 2:53 pm

@Rebel Slick so long as you don’t care about dvr or adding on hbo or cinemax Slingtv will be worth it to you, though I’m told the add-ons for the more obscure channels can make the price tag jump up considerably so do take if you go that route

    • pleasantcrew

      July 3, 2020 at 7:28 pm

@LloydChristmas318 I don’t understand why more reviewers aren’t mentioning Philo as an alternative. It’s good for $20 per month

    • Frank Rustyak

      July 3, 2020 at 8:06 pm

Right now, because they have the channels I actually watch (youtube tv doesn’t have AHC, Cooking Channel, Great American Country), and because there aren’t any sports to watch, I’ve been watching little ol’ Philo, and it’s mere $20 per month has helped out a lot.

    July 3, 2020 at 12:09 am

This is like your mileage will vary. I have Fios and Ooma. So right there I pay $90 for the past 8 years. I get rid of internet and I pay more if I drop tv. I bought my 4K TiVo with lifetime subscription a few years ago so I already paid for it. People talk about cord cutting because they pay like $200 a month. Never in my life have I paid that. You bundle and you get one DVR, not one for each bedroom. Throw a HD antenna on for the rest of the rooms. Make sure the bundle doesn’t expire and you negotiate.

  10. QuietStormX

I had YouTube TV a while ago, I left because they didn’t have Viacom channels or shows I liked or wanted like BET. I had to turn to SlingTV then. I left them too for AT&T TV Now for my Streaming TV service with HBO/Cinemax. I kept my Showtime subscription on the Showtime app on Amazon HDTV.

Nope it is not compelling to me. Since I have a sub to all on my cable the streaming services when optioned ends up costing way more. May be if I had a limited subs this could be ok. One thing does YouTube stream in higher that 1080 using Apple TV?

Ok, you can get the basic DirecTV package for the same price as YoutubeTV, so you’re not saving anything. “Cordcutting” is about saving money, with the price hike Youtube failed.

Good review man. I was wondering what this service would look like and you just gave an excellent walk through.

Love YouTube TV. Been a subscriber since the beginning. Still cheaper than what I was paying for satellite service.

    July 3, 2020 at 9:44 pm

Or you could get the fire stick it’s cheaper than screwtube or put a TV antenna on your roof and get 60 to 100 channels OTA thanks to dishtenna but the powers that be shut em down cuz they were too good cable companies didn’t want them

  38. John Salazar

    July 3, 2020 at 9:53 pm

Cnet, I’m sorry but I am calling BS. First off, no your cable is not going up, all anyone has to do is call them up and tell them that you will cancel if trey jack up your rates and they will put you on another promotion. If you are going down in features, grow a spine and learn to negotiate.
Secondly, Phone? Get a Google Voice line for free. You can even port a landline number over to them although it does require jumping a few hurdles, but still, free for life.
Internet, I’m paying $65 with taxes for 1000gb fiber, shop around.
TV, there are these things called Antennas. Or just stream free content, you probably already subscribe to Netflix amongst other services.
Sorry, but $65 for YTtv is waaaaaaaay too high!

  39. John Salazar

    July 3, 2020 at 9:59 pm

4:58 Wants to save $$$ but adding in HBO Max. Makes no sense.

  40. John Salazar

    July 3, 2020 at 10:00 pm

Why do you need DVR service when most of these services have on demand?

  41. miker6570

    July 3, 2020 at 10:07 pm

That is way too much for that service. There is a good chance you could spend less subbing to all of those services individually. Example all of those local channels you are paying google(youtube tv) for you could get for FREE with a OTA digital antenna. Which are widely available online or by buying them at Target, Walmart, Best Buy, etc.

Dude, you’re late to the party. YTTV use to be great. But the price has increased 55% in exactly two years. NO WAY THIS SHOULD BE ACCEPTABLE TO ANYONE. Sorry, but I’ve cancelled my subscription and I encourage all other subscribers to do the same.

I have had it since it was $35/month. I record like three shows. Is that worth $70/month, especially since Rick and Morty is only 10 episodes a year? I could just buy each episode and come out way ahead. I am sad to cancel, but I am.

  49. travelinSmooth

    July 4, 2020 at 1:23 am

Not sure where and what service you have but I have internet/tv with a download of 200mbps and I have about 140 channels and I’m just paying 120

  50. Corey Fischer

    July 4, 2020 at 4:25 am

More expensive then cable, and with less. It’s comical because streaming services basically turned into cable channels, and to get all of the content is now more expensive. It’s like a Droste effect.

  59. Carl Radcliff

    July 4, 2020 at 11:36 am

I would have considered it at $50. But not now. The value decreases each time them decrease the difference or advantage of cord cutting. At this rate in another 12-18 months you will be paying the same as if you were back with cable or satellite. This is what happens when greed and lack of listening to your customer does. Consider this Google (Youtube), would it not be better to have millions of subscribers at a lower rate which in effect make money for you or thousands at a higher rate. The lure of a service like this is to save money over traditional tv services. Now you are just like the rest of them. Learn what you customer wants and stick with it..Bad Google Bad…!

I got the price increase email at 5pm on June 30th. I cancelled my Youtube TV service at 11PM. The main reason I got the service was for local sports. Since there haven’t been any sports lately I was considering cancelling the service, but kept it because the virus had me at home most of the time. I’m back to antennae tv and the free content on Roku. Right now I’ve been enjoying the free Pluto stations. I just wish YouTube TV had an option just for local sports. That is the only thing I will miss… Oh well… 🙂

We have YouTube TV, but only because PlayStation Vue shut down. We miss the 4 show picture-in-picture feature, and the YouTube TV guide doesn’t remember where I was and goes back to the top making me scroll forever to keep reviewing the guide. And, we no longer have the NFL Network.

We are also frustrated with the price increase. We don’t watch any of the new CBS/Viacom channels, so for us this is a complete waste of money.

  87. GraceInMadness

The entire reason people are fleeing cable is having to pay exorbitant prices for channels they don’t watch. Inserting commercials on top of it is adding the proverbial insult to injury. This is a a comically antiquated business model being shoe-horned into a modern interface by tone deaf, ivory tower executives.
