So how does Apple repossess an iPhone if you stop making monthly payments? The cost of repossessing a car is economically viable, because a car is worth a lot. But a phone? They could shut the phone off and make it worthless, but Apple won’t recover it’s costs if the default happens early in the contract. I suppose people might make their phone payments over their rent in hard economic times, but the potential for Apple to lose money if this becomes the standard means of owning an iPhone seems high to me.

“Renting” a phone is a stupid idea. You can buy used ones online, do a payment plan for a new one or just keep what you have until it breaks.

    April 2, 2022 at 6:29 pm

Nope don’t like renting. I like buying my devices out right. Would never own another apple device anyway. Samsung all the way for me!

In the near future, everything will be a subscription and we won’t own anything

And if you say something that goes against the view of the corporation, your subscriptions get cancelled.

  15. Jason jay gregory

    April 2, 2022 at 7:42 pm

Of course it will be cheaper you can’t sell the device after you give it back

  16. SecretOfMonkeyIsland

    April 2, 2022 at 8:31 pm

People used to rent gadgets back in the 80’s as they were too expensive to buy outright (tv’s, radios, VCR’s), this seems like a return to those times (Are we moving backwards).

Yea you’ll end up paying more over time and you’ll lose your right to repair since you don’t own it

Leasing = more environmentally friendly is total BS
They will crank out more phones than ever and expend energy while producing more waste byproducts. E-recycling is just code for old electronics sent to poor country so people paid 5 cents an hour can open them up to extract the minuscule quantities of precious metals inside.

The only thing you should ever lease is an apartment when you are starting out in your career or in school and have a good chance of moving in under 2-4 years. Ownership means you answer to no one, are free to do as you like, and build wealth by not being subject to inflationary pressures. If you own a house (and these crazy days even a car) you at least keep up with inflation.

As long as a phone does what you need it to do there is no reason to upgrade. Most people just make calls, take photos, email, text, and watch video on their phones. iPhones have had these capabilities for a long time.

    April 2, 2022 at 10:48 pm

I’m sure it’ll be like AT&T NEXT. I only get a new iPhone every year cause I use the camera for work. If I didn’t use it for work I don’t think it’s the best idea to get a new phone every year.

  22. Tech Nerd

    April 2, 2022 at 11:00 pm

If Apple requires a contract, no deal. That would be the Comcast Cable model. If they say pay as you go and return it any time, then maybe. That would be the Netflix model. The only other good thing I think is that the phones would be unlocked instead of the carrier locked versions. Don’t care about the planet and neither does Apple. That’s corporate spin to give idiots the warm and fuzzies.

  23. Adipose Rex

    April 2, 2022 at 11:23 pm

I like the idea of a subscription. I like to upgrade frequently so this would work for me.

If it’s a subscription then I can cancel anytime, give the phone back and re-subscribe anytime. Then potentially I can change to a different color iPhone every month.

    April 3, 2022 at 2:33 am

Just call it leasing, because that’s exactly what it is. You’ll also still have to eat the sales tax in the beginning on the full value of the phone.

  36. gamester1416

    April 4, 2022 at 12:23 am

Cheap is only if apple would hand them out just for $5 a month with no down payment. For people not to complain if they accidentally miss a payment. But it’s apple. So they’re not going to be cheap.

  37. Thomas Lautenberger

    April 4, 2022 at 3:20 am

I feel like this video is a bit tone deaf. Recycling a phone is not nearly as eco friendly as getting a new phone less often. You can’t have getting a new phone and creating less e waste. A subscription model will not be more affordable. If you can’t finance an iPhone se you shouldn’t be buying a new iPhone. Apple has no incentive to introduce a competitive subscription model. This is all about control they want to prevent right to repair, and sideloading.

  38. Slimy feet

    April 4, 2022 at 4:18 am

This is absurd, the only way to get value out of a 1300$ phone is to buy it outright and use it for 3-5 years. Upgrading annually is a waste of money, i don’t know anyone that does anything on there phone that makes the A15 struggle. This is definitely going to be a predatory Business practice that forces expensive smart phones in to peoples hands that can’t afford it. I love my iPhone 13 pro max, but if they transfer all iPhone usage into some sort of subscription I will certainly be leaving.

  44. Mark

If it’s good for Apple, it will be bad for consumers.

  45. Tim Twining

    April 5, 2022 at 2:07 pm

This is a quietly powerful move. It will quickly consume the entire market. Everyone of the negative comments below is missing the big point here, residual value is as relevant to smartphones as it is with cars. With the advent of a mean price of $1000 per item and an upgrade cycle of a completely new and improved device every year, depreciation of the asset is rapid if not instant. By leasing the asset the depreciation isn’t an issue anymore. There is so little retained value in high end phones as against the rapid upgrade cycle it makes no sense to make it a capital purchase and take the massive loss in value. I guarantee you, everyone with significant liquidity will prefer to lease rather than purchase and this will quickly become a dominant means of owning a high value smartphone in 24 to no more than 36 month terms. It’s going to sweep the industry. This is bank folks. Like it or not. This is big.
