Women’s sports are surging in popularity around the world, with record-breaking viewership, attendance and revenue growth. And yet, social media algorithms still skew towards covering men’s sports. Olympic rower Kate Johnson, who now leads global marketing strategy for sports and entertainment at Google, unpacks why this is still happening — and what it will take to level the playing field for women’s sports. In my country the male football World cup games are shared between a state channel and a paid channel. I was expecting the same to happen for the female football World Cup, but all games were behind the paid wall… VPN ended up being the solution to watch the games and it was quite refreshing that they were not rolling on the ground as much as the men sometimes do

Look… People only care about things if they make money, and women’s sports not only don’t make money, they are propped up by the proceeds from men’s sports. I’m all for gender equality, but what you’re asking for is people to pay for your special treatment so you can feel better.

I’ve never seen a man whining when they searched for the best paid Hollywood artist and the answer was Julia Roberts when they actually wanted to know actors (male) only. Same with modelling and Gisele Bundchen or Naomi Campbell showed up. Most women’s sports don’t have visibility because nobody cares! And no, this is not an ambiguous or sexist comment. Not even women themselves watch women’s sports, hence the lack of visibility (and revenue, and profit, etc etc etc).

You ever thought that maybe, just maybe, people want to see activities performed by the best? Like why is the WNBA unpopular, but women’s gymnastics is far more popular than mens? Is it because the whole sports industry is sexist, or, and I know this is a radical thought, could it be because one gender is better at dunking a basketball and the other gender is better at activities that reward artistry and flexibility?

What do you do when the world declares something impossible? When physician-scientist David Fajgenbaum was dying from a rare disease and social entrepreneur Kiah Williams was confronting the realities of economic hardship, they began asking a different question: What can I do today? In this conversation, they discuss how turning hope into action can drive meaningful change — one step at a time. (This conversation is hosted by The Audacious Project’s Alexandra Tillmann) (Recorded at TEDNext 2025 on November 10, 2025.)

The TED Idea Search wraps up in Amman, Jordan, in a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater and in front of a crowd of 4,000. What unfolds inside those stone walls is something the series hasn’t quite seen before: speakers shaped by the weight of living in a region the world tends to define for itself. From a mountaineer who turned grief into motivation to a therapist rewriting the Arab world’s language around mental health, the final city makes the strongest case yet that the best ideas can come from anywhere.

Watch the full talks from the TEDxAmman Idea Search:

00:00 – Intro
3:24 – Rehearsals
16:00 – The Talks
36:28 – Deliberation
38:48 – The Winner Is…

The most interesting ideas often come from the most unexpected places. We searched the globe for ideas with the power to inspire, motivate and change lives — and we found them at @TEDx events around the world. The TED Idea Search follows extraordinary speakers from 9 countries competing for a spot on the TED main stage in Vancouver this April.
