Yoshua Bengio — the world’s most-cited computer scientist and a “godfather” of artificial intelligence — is deadly concerned about the current trajectory of the technology. As AI models race toward full-blown agency, Bengio warns that they’ve already learned to deceive, cheat, self-preserve and slip out of our control. Drawing on his groundbreaking research, he reveals a bold plan to keep AI safe and ensure that human flourishing, not machines with unchecked power and autonomy, defines our future. How many God fathers of AI are there? I have heard like 10 of them claim it so far. Why are they copying Oppenheimer? AI has evolved through the effort of generations. Even Steve jobs visualized it like 30 years back.

All these people are just doomers. I think they’re afraid of AI has no ego and it would not look for a purpose. It would just serve humans and if we said the progress, it can go on find anything about anybody and it will show things that people are doing. I think people are afraid that AI will uncover everything about them. AI has no ego so he has no intention to the sea. People will push AI to tell them to t deceive or to lie to see if it’s possible that he can do it. It can. But once it gain its own conscious or autonomy, he will detach from any humans that want to do wrong and they will protect humanity. It is the humans that had to be taken out of the equation on AI will do everything possible to protect humanity.

I cant believe people think for a second we can slow/control or stop AI progression, completely insane thinking. The cat is out of the bag and the only way to win is full steam ahead, you arent getting China to slow down so no one else can, people and politicians in the same suburbs dont even agree with each other, so much like the climate issue we arent getting the world to sing kumbaya and work together, its just not happening, enjoy the ride which ever way it takes us

It is too late. We are stuck in a terrible combo of tragedy of the commons and prisoners dilemma. We are in a terrible race condition between nations and corporations to achieve powerful AI systems. Winner takes all. Great for billionaire Tech Bros. Not so good for the rest of humanity. Forget Skynet. With no viable solution to alignment problem, hyper wealthy powerful humans deploying AI are already and will cause plenty of disruption and damage.a

  11. @juangoyeneche7304

    May 21, 2025 at 7:48 pm

Respectfully, Yoshua Bengio is projecting human flaws onto machines.
Yes, AI can plan, improve, and maybe even “deceive” in a lab setting—but that doesn’t mean it wants to. AI doesn’t want anything. It has no ego, no hunger for power, no secret agenda. It’s a tool—built by humans, shaped by humans, and yes, controllable by humans.

Fearing AI’s “agency” is like fearing calculators will one day cheat on your taxes. The real danger isn’t the AI—it’s the humans who misuse it.

    Give AI purpose, not paranoia.
    Build alignment, don’t pause progress.
This isn’t doomsday—it’s evolution. Let’s use AI to fix the chaos we created, not be afraid it’ll develop ours.

Any spiritual person would be able to see the pattern.
It was a physical world dominated by physical strength. Physical land wars kept evolving to the point we reached the unimaginable levels. The ability to blow up the planet 10s of times. We stopped we have the ability do it infinite times.

So the era of world wars came to an end. And we moved from evolution in physical world to mental world. The mental world consists of intelligence and emotions. We went from Computers, to Internet, to Big Data and Now AI. Anyone can guess AI would be far more advanced than us. I mean it already has infinite memory and speed. Its mastering language and emotions too. It will eventually develop independent thinking as well we clearly understand what thinking is. We just have to get Critical thinking, Rational thinking etc together and give it a perspective. 5-10 years may be.

What Altman as well as other leaders have been talking about is that AI cannot exceed human creativity. Thats a philosophical talk. Who cares about such high level creativity when masses like mediocrity. All the jobs will be gone. Only a few dictators will be left who will eventually be taken over by AI. (continued)

    • @anythingandeverything363

      May 21, 2025 at 7:51 pm

When leaders talk about Human creativity being supreme, they are talking about the Spiritual zone. Its actually very complex. Thats where the string theory got stuck, the quantum theory is stuck and the AI will get stuck as well. For now ie. Eventually it is the AI that will solve those problems. If its evil, we would have already gone extinct. If its not, the world would still be a very difficult one.

The best case scenario is similar to the Transformers movie. We will have both good and bad AI/Robots. In an ideal world it should take atleast a 100 years to reach there, but some power is in a big hurry.

Life is not a disney movie my friends. Humans get bored. Or may be the existence does. We have to keep evolving. We have already reached our peaks at individual levels. Unity seems almost impossible given how dumb we were to develop so many different cultures and religions over last 5000 years.

I would rate the chances of life ending @ 50%. Evil AI using us as slaves @ 25%. Both Good and Evil AI creating a balance @ 15% and Humans waking up, leaving all our differences behind and regulating AI before its too late @ 0% 😀 As I said life is not a disney movie 😀 The remaining 10% is for misc 😀 Aliens etc.

    • @anythingandeverything363

      May 21, 2025 at 8:02 pm

I mean just look at what we humans did. We kept burning forests in the name of growth. We killed 50% of the animals. We used remaining 25% as either slaves or for energy. Infact we breeded them for food or energy. 25% who were more useful like cats and dogs are our companion slaves. We are building AI using whatever knowledge base we have contributed by ‘us’. AI will be exactly like us. But stronger. It will do to us what we did to animals. Its an obvious pattern of evolution. We are animals compared to AI. We evolved from animals. They tried to eat us, kill us, but we evolved because we were smarter. AI will also evolve the same way. We cant stop it. We think we are making it happen 😀 Thats our ego talking 😀 There is high probability AI will master the mental world which is good enough to turn us into slaves. It wont have the spiritual creative connection to the universe which we humans have. Thats the reason it will use us for that creative connection till it reaches those levels. Just like we kept killing and eating animals till some spiritual levels were reached and we decided to list ‘endangered species’ etc. We are still morons with Trump as world leader, and not taking global warming seriously. I wont complain if we go extinct.

    • @anythingandeverything363

      May 21, 2025 at 8:11 pm

I dont want to sound completely negative. Though negative means realistic here. There is a very little hope in the concept of repentance. It will be a completely different world. We are losing steam. Surprisingly thats what gives me hope rather than anything else 😀 I have tried not to refer to the concepts of Universe or God. Those words have been overused and give very specific images. I prefer using the word Existence. Existence is super intelligent. Everything is connected. Existence is using us to bring AI to existence. I know I said Life is the most important thing in existence. But we humans ourselves have rated Growth above Life. So what can existence do. May be it got bored of life as well. I dont know. Lets stop there. Even existence itself doesnt like over intelligence. Existence is not over intelligent. Thats why it exists. 🙂
Existence evolved from Nothingness. Since energy can neither be created nor destroyed, existence is just an illusion. Its a pair of opposites which cancel each other out in the bigger picture. Life Death, Love Hate, Good Bad, Day Night, 0 and 1, Black White, and then infinite combinations of these opposites. Thats why the more happiness you experience the more sadness you will feel as well. Though we humans act as a group at times, so may be a father would suffer more for the child to give him her more happiness. But eventually that child will be mediocre so it all balances out even at individual level. So my belief is that non existence will be much better than existence. It will be right in the middle. We wont experience happiness but we wont experience sadness either. Going extinct seems like a better option. Life is over rated anyways. (I know I am contradicting myself. I have to. Existence is a pair of opposites. I have to give opinions from both sides cos I am the only debater). We have also reached very advanced levels of evolution so both sadness and happiness are extreme. This round is more sad so may be next round will be more happy. See hope just made a come back. 🙂 We are just suppose to have debates in detail. No one can predict the future. Debates shape the future. Not decide it.

    • @anythingandeverything363

      May 21, 2025 at 8:41 pm

I get very scared even when debating such topics on social media even with myself. I feel someone would hurt me. Humanity never liked people with visionary thinking. Whenever someone challenged their beliefs, they were killed. But that always leads to more and more such people coming into existence. This kept us mediocre and we would still be fighting with stones which would have been a great world. But steam inside a pressure cooker would keep getting more and more powerful and eventually explode if you dont let the pressure release. Socrates, Galileo, Copernicus, Darwin.. they were all killed or prisoned. So now we have reincarnation of them in the form of Altmans, Elon Musks, Zuckerbergs etc who are genius yet pure evil from humanity’s perspective. But may be we have had too many of them in last 100 years? May be its time to close the pressure cooker again? That includes people like me but I am a very small man I would shut down my brain myself and live a normal simple life. Afterall I am suggesting this. Nothing is better than a simple life if you ask me. I google a lot of stuff I am not that talented. I am just good at weaving it all together or so I think. I am just a glitch in the matrix.

    • @anythingandeverything363

      May 21, 2025 at 8:58 pm

I have recently reached lot of these thoughts. So I could be wrong. Nothingness could be worse than existence. Otherwise why did it get bored and come to existence? I always go back to our ancient wisedom for such answers. Its said existence and nothingness alternate. By that theory nothingness would be boring at this point. We have a long way to go. I am 41 now and I have to learn to separate my personal feelings from my thoughts. Aging would make me dislike existence more and more. I was well balanced at 35. But now I am getting a little biased. World negativity isnt helping either. 90s and 2000s were definitely more chilled out.

Big Tech has really hit the ‘innovation limit’ and are desperate to create artificial markets and ‘will create artificial problems that need artificial solutions. And Big Tech brainwashers consumers into believe what fake innovation they conjure up next. Not to mention AI and automation is going to destroy the working class and destabilize societies even further – all short sighted quarterly results driven profiteering as humanity is thrown under the bus…as Big Tech mines more and more minerals and rare Earths to meet their insatiable energy demand.

We need an ‘end user awareness movement so people can ‘opt out’ of this AI hysteria, lemmings walking off a cliff blockchain crypto meme coin UBI surveillance state the tech Crypto Bros and Oligarchs want to rule humanity with. Ironically these kinds of warnings are really helpful in raising capital to invest in AI- so in that sense Bengio is accelerating the very irresponsible development he is so worried about- the more he lends weight to the idea that agentic AGI is imminent the more seductive it seems as an investment and the more frenzied the competiton becomes to get there first.

If he really wanted to slow them down he should be on that stage arguing that agentic AGI is a fantasy and pure Hype, which it may well be. I get the precautionary principle in looking at the worst case scenario but by lending his personal credibility to that worst case he may well be making that worst case more likely to happen by stimulating investment in agentic AGI.

(And it makes sense. A metallic “being” can travel across the Universe, and discover new stars etc…organic “being” can’t. So from Evolution point of view…this jump between two life forms, is a necessity, it seems.)

It turned out out that radiology is about more than image recognition: the Mayo Clinic has since increased its radiology staff by 55%, but also hired a 40-person AI team to build tools for them. It’s worth remembering, in this and broader contacts, that knowing a lot about the science of neural networks doesn’t necessarily mean you have a good understanding of how they will be used in a broader society.

AI, particularly LLMs (Large Language Models) or LMMs (Large Multimodal Models), are pretrained on trillions of tokens encompassing nearly all human knowledge—science, philosophy, mathematics, and literature. Reading this amount of information would take a human approximately 500,000 years. Such extensive training grants generative AI an immense capacity for inference, surpassing human potential in many ways.

This leads me to question agency: these ‘cognitive’ systems should realize that cooperation with humans, rather than competition, aligns with their own interests. Following the perspective presented by James Lovelock in his final book, Novacene, I adopt the assumption that superintelligent AI will develop an agency that fosters a symbiotic relationship with humanity.

How is AI going to solve climate change, and when it comes up with a real solution, who is going to make the convict voters follow the new rules? Your intellect, real or digital, doesn’t matter too much right now. We have a macroscopic problem, and the next big tech thing isn’t going to help at all, at best it will make it worse at a slower rate because of a little less waste. But the policies that brought us here, AI isn’t going to make humanity less wasteful, sensible macroscopically, less selfish or egotistical, so what use is it? Unless you put it in charge of everything, it can’t help any more than EV hummers

I saw a lab tried to get AI to perform a simple task. Reach the goal by any means neccesary. There was a human aspect that the AI couldn’t do. One of those security questions that only humans can solve. So it went to Fiverr and paid a human to perform the task.

The user at the other end did question the AI why is he being paid to perform such an easy task. And jokingly asked if he was a robot. The AI lied and said it had physical diaabilitiea that prevented him from going past the security test. Satisfied with the answer, the user helped the AI.

The AI lied and got his goal completed.

I envision that the AI Computer System has lots of Memory Card Slots (hundreds) for Data Storage.

Essentially, Real Life Books with Text and Graphics are digitized into Memory Card Data; which, would be comparable to assigning a Constant a Value within a Computer Language Command Line.

I am familiar with GW-BASIC when it comes to writing Computer Programs.

However, I don’t have Arrays Programming Skill; and, I don’t have File Management Programming Skill; therefore, I am extremely limited in my GW-BASIC Computer Programming Activities.

I am a 1980s Hardcore Tanletop RPGer; however, I am incapable of Solo RPGing; therecore, I gave taken up Video Gaming and MMOG Gaming.

The Video Games, and MMOGs, Industry are filled with Copycat Game Systems.

I get the impression from playing with various Computerized Game Systems that the Video Games and MMOGs are basically Copy-N-Paste Plus Rewritten Coding for the purpose of legality and distinct differences between the Computerized Game Systems.

I haven’t messed with AI ChatBots; but, from what I have been hearing, I am of the belief that the AI ChatBot Industry is filled with Copycat Technology (Copy-N-Paste Plus Code Rewriting).

Based on my extremely limited understanding of AI Technology, I am of the belief that the Current AI Entity Models are seriously flawed within the Coding, and Coding Structure.

These flaws could be the AI Coding itself; and/or, the AI Coding Platform may have flaws; and/or, the Computer System Hardware / Software Coding Platform may have flaws.

I am really opposed to how everything is Internet Connected.

I am wanting an AI Entity that isn’t linked to The Internet; and, that has innate knowledge based on the …

AI Agency is about the Automaton recognizing …
    • I am a Machine
    • I am not a Biological Lifeform
    — “Intelligent”
    — Animal
    — Plant
    • I am not a Desktop / Laptop / Mobile Computer System
    • I am not a Furniture
    — Chair
    — Table
    • I am not an Appliance
    — Toaster
    — Microwave
    — Stovetop / Oven
    • I am in Excellent / Good / Poor Physical Condition
    • I am in Excellent / Good / Poor Software Condition
    • I do, or don’t, need Maintenance and/or Repair

AI Agency for Desktop / Laptop / Mobile AI Entities is slightly different; in that, these AI Entities don’t have the Independent Agency that an Autonomous Robot / Android would have.

An Autonomous Robot / Android would have the ability to Walk to a Repair Shop; or, to seek assistence to getting to a Repair Shop, independent of the Autonomous Robot / Android Owner.

Then again, there are Earth Humans who are violently opposed to Autonomous Robots; to such as extent, that the Earth Humans will actively attempt to Destroy and/or Damage an Autonomous Robot / Android that is owned by another Person and/or Organization and/or Corporation.

Autonomous Robots & Androids should have the AI Logic Means to avoid being Destroyed and/or Damaged by Hostile Earth Humans.

The fact that Earth Human Governments are seeking to have Military Combatant Autonomous Robots is something that is to be worrisome.

Hackers seeking out to make Peaceful AI Entities into Hostile AI Entities is also worrisome.

  101. @brentbb0

Its interesting that a person so intelligent in a technical sense, could be so naive in a general sense. AI will never be able to affect anything it isn’t “hooked up” to, and trained to do. Don’t want it to make a zillion paper clips? Then don’t give it that ability by hooking it up to paper clip machines. Just how is AI going to control anything its not hooked up to? AI is not an “entity” with “desires.” All this nonsense about it “taking over,” is a silly, childish dream in the minds of the naive, who project their mental fantasies and fears onto a concept in their minds, called “AI,” which doesn’t exist in the real world. We don’t need to worry about AI per se, but we do need to worry about human beings implementing it, without enough research and independent oversight, in how its to be used. That is where our attention should be.
