The roadmap to ending pollution from transportation is here, says electrification advocate Monica Araya. In conversation with head of TED Chris Anderson, Araya introduces Drive Electric: a global campaign to retire the polluting internal combustion engine in time to avoid climate disaster. And she shares some exciting news: a breakthrough funding commitment from the Audacious Project that puts the project well on its way to realizing a billion-dollar plan to supercharge the transition to electric vehicles over the next five years. Learn more about the coalition of 70 organizations powering this global action — and the role all cities, politicians and citizens can play to secure a zero-emission transport future. (This ambitious plan is a part of the Audacious Project, TED’s initiative to inspire and fund global change.)

Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

As an American I want a right to own a muscle car. The push for electric vehicles is un-American. Battery mines are illegal in the United States because they poison the ground water and the environment. Dont push your beliefs on me. You want an electric car fine. But I will never purchase a vehicle newer than 1975 PERIOD. You think the military will be using electric vehicles? You think the military has smog devices on their vehicles? Think again!

I see everyone still believes EVs are the way. People, we need a MODAL shift, not a fuel one. People need to drop our focus on vehicles in general, particularly in cities, and move to active and public transit. It’s that simple.

EDIT: re-worded to better convey my opinion.

I don’t live in the city that won’t work for me the nearest big city to me but that kind of transportation is well over an hour from my home do you city dwellers forget this part but want to control the whole world

@Mike sorry about the confusion. I meant we need to drop our focus on vehicles. They are a part of the solution, but they currently seem to be the default even in cities (where the majority of the world live btw). If you live in the middle of nowhere I’m not expecting you to walk 2 miles to the shop, but it’s undeniable that for the vast majority of people who drive (those in cities in the western world) we need to encourage them into trains and buses and onto bikes, not just to swap fossil fuels for batteries that still aren’t environmentally friendly and will eventually lead to a separate ecological disaster if we leave our current auto use unchecked.

I’ve edited the post to fix the inaccuracies in my wording. Sorry again

The mad push for electric vehicles is just a ploy to take yet more control of our lives & income by the government. We will be even more dependent on china for batteries and Americans will lose even more manufacturing jobs. We need to be energy self sufficient without the aid of other countries. Nuclear energy would be a start , it is cheap and clean and much improved from years ago. Do your research , don`t blindly believe what you are being told.

No real solutions from her except spend a lot of money. Good ole capitalism will solve this. Better quality cars, with amazing innovations, and cheaper in the long run. It’s called TESLA! And yes, they are in process of developing systems that store energy and harvest sustainable energy. No regulation required. Pretty obvious, but a lot of people don’t like Elon because he’s a capitalist. Yes! That’s how innovation and real change happens! Not from governments.

Sweet dreams are made of this. Just curious what this right side of history will do with not 100% recyclable batteries and who will loose their health doing so. Modern li-ion degrades about 10% of capacity per year even if it’s not heavily used, so after few years you need to deal with replacement, and it’s not fully renewable process, it is looks like to me at the moment that pollution will change its own form and will be moved from one place to another. If you are talking about make world better in context of your home only, then yes, it will be better for one’s, not for entire planet.

Don’t get me wrong, I build and used electric vehicle 7 years back and it’s great, but populists show you only one side of the coin and what is on another doesn’t looks like dramatically better than existing situation. I would fully support clear plan how to deal with constant battery replacement and recycling, but so far just hearing that somebody will do something when we face it.

    Good luck.

Firstly, power production must be ecological. If electricity is still produced in coal/oil based power plants, it will not be eco at all – see Germany. Secondly, most of the infrastructure must be upgraded to even send so much power needed to charge all the electrical vehicles. Right now infrastructure is still old and malfunctioning in many countries. And finally, biggest change must happen in China, USA and India, that produce together over 50% of entire CO2 emission in the world.

      December 21, 2021 at 10:15 pm

You are right, though I think it does gain some efficiency (which would mean less fossil fuels for the same amount of power) when the fuel is burnt and power is generated in centralized plants instead of car engines (although some would be lost in power lines, and idk if combustion or EVs use their power better). It does have to happen, but this group is focusing just on the cars ig

Exactly. The only reason for this switch is new money to be made. If they actually cared about the environment they’d build better public transport infrastructure.
Kinda like if they cared about trees they’d implement forest management, not just plant more trees to cause wildfires. But again no one actually cares, only care about where there is money to be made

Here in the US, we cannot properly utilize our resources. We do not have the infrastructure or investment to upgrade it to be able to support electric transportation. How can a shopping mall afford to put charging stations for the number of vehicles that will require them? If I want to drive from LA to Las Vegas where do I charge my car when I visiting? What if we don’t have time to wait for a car to charge?

    • Pinstripe Jim

@kevin scott Semantics? Tesla is doing great things but our government can’t keep up with Tesla and Tesla can’t solve all the problems until our government at all levels utilizing budgets and contracts effectively.

    • Taranizs

      December 22, 2021 at 4:54 am

@Pinstripe Jim Keep up with Tesla? If the President and his little “EV summit” are any indication, the government doesn’t even recognize Tesla exists. Seriously, they had a conference to discuss EV’s and didn’t invite Elon Musk? And then to make things really stupid, Biden went and heaped praise on Chevrolet as though they were the ones doing the best work and leading the way for EV’s. Meanwhile in the real world, the Chevy “Bolt” has a recall on it because of a tiny issue where, you know, it seems to spontaneously burst into flames and burn to the ground……

    • Pinstripe Jim

      December 22, 2021 at 10:43 pm

@Taranizs Yes, I agree. They will not acknowledge Tesla or companies like them until it benefits the government. Space X didn’t get any US gov launch contracts until they spent their own money and proved they could do it cheaper and more efficiently. Same with EV infrastructure. I’m sure the Gov is sitting back watching Tesla install all the EV charging stations at their expense and will bring them in when the Gov needs them. I see this crap daily.

If you want to push EV’s as a serious thing, going off on your own tangent at this point is a waste of effort. What you should be doing is trying to work with Elon & TESLA, because he already has it figured out.

I am 100% for going electric and I also know what cars are the safest and fastest (not to mention best looking IMO). I have questions about this talk like where this data about legacy automakers actually pushing for electric is. They’ve been dragging their feet the entire way while one manufacturer of car is leading the way because electric cars are what they do.
I love TED talks but this one is seriously distorting the facts. I think campaigns like this are awesome but giving half hearted credit to the company who showed the way is just plain disappointing, especially as all the others laughed at them and only now trying to make the switch because they have to.

Can someone smart explain this – where does electricity come from? 80% World electricity=Burning fossil fuels, 20%= Clean ie wind, solar, hydro etc. The fuel is being burnt in a power plant instead of an internal combustion engine. Used car batteries eventually will end up in a land fills/oceans. Electric vehicles are like my mobile phone. It doesn’t emit CO2, but when we’re charging 7 Billion of our mobiles every night, there’s a coal/diesel plant burning somewhere to charge it. Ratio varies with countries, but on a global scale fossil fuel generated electricity still dominates 80% share by far. Before going electric transport, shouldn’t we actually be shifting the source input to more clean / renewables?

      December 23, 2021 at 11:24 am

@MrBallen I’m actually advocating for cleaner full sources *before* the EV revolution. I think the priority should be to first scale up renewables – hydro, solar, wind – before making billions of batteries charging them with fossil. All I’m saying is that renewables should be upped before EVs, otherwise EVs may be self defeating. Unless you could give me a better explanation, may be something which I might have overlooked?

    • Kyle Nolan

      December 23, 2021 at 5:40 pm

@Just Me, I’ll give you the benefit of a doubt but understand that if you really wanted to know, you could easily find answers, and that your questions indicate RW disinformation consumption.

Renewables are the fastest growing energy source, so you’re mistaking today’s situation with what is rapidly coming.

The two efforts are not mutually exclusive.

Electric vehicles are more efficient and less polluting even if FF derived electricity is used. Power plants run at much higher thermodynamic efficiency than ICE’s. Even with transmission losses, they come out ahead. Then add in regenerative braking. Rapidly approaching is large scale vehicle to grid power which will level out demand from power plants. This both increases the efficiency of their operations and often eliminate the need for “peaking plants” altogether, which are usually natural gas fired.

Batteries will absolutely be recycled. Their constituents are far too valuable not to. Some major investment opportunities in that very industry

    • Just Me

      December 25, 2021 at 5:22 am

@Kyle Nolan Thank you, now that was an informative answer which I was looking for.
Ref your comment on RW disinformation, firstly I’m ex Armed Forces in India. From what I can gather from your message, you’re probably from a Western country, likely the US, with whom we’ve had several joint training sessions. An IED blew my legs off and partly severed my lumbar spine. The ambush also had an militant sniper who missed my head just because I has flat on the ground, with no legs. Although sometimes I wish he’d got my head.
So I have no interest or association with any W whatsoever. My 20 year career in the Indian Armed Forces, which is an inherently non aligned, apolitical organisation in India, has been hard wired into our brains right from our probation period at the National Defence Academy when I was 18 years old. So you could discard at presumption. It would help.
“Rebewables are the fastest growing energy source” – Yes, maybe true for richer countries, but it’s not happening here in India, where majority of electricity is from coal fired plants.
We simply don’t have the money to diversify into cost intensive renewables, which don’t make economic sense with a country of 1.4 Billion people, GDP of $ 3 Trillion. As opposed to the US, 330 Million people, GDP $ 21 Trillion. Those dynamics don’t allow us to do things richer countries can. Our Govts are still focussed on human survival basics – food for the hungry (approx 400 million live below the poverty line, less than a dollar/day), shelter, and clothing. That’s where we are. Our below PV population of 350-400 million, is greater than the entire population of US, or UK or any Western country
So what might be happening in your part of the world, is very different from what’s happening here.
I’m assuming your study on thermodynamics & efficiency is correct, looks like you’ve done your reading. But we’re talking from very different perspectives. Renewables are not the fastest growing source at least, in most of Asia. So I’m all for EVs, but I think we’d agree that the source input for those batteries need to be clean, even if TD efficiency of coal plants is higher than ICE. Batteries being recycled is new for me, and if that is truly happening, without polluting the soil /oceans, that would make this while eco system more greener. Have you got a good link where I can read on recycling EV batteries?

Electric cars aren’t any cleaner than fossil fuel powered cars. Just because they say its 0 emission, behind the scene they burn 12 to 13 times more fossil fuel to just get the lithium-ion batteries. It is already 13 times more harmful for the environment. The cobalt is found under water and the machines that are used to get the cobalt for the batteries are using thousands of litres of fossil fuel to produce a single car with un-reusable batteries that cannot be recycled because of chemicals inside of it. You already can see that people with older Teslas are selling them because Tesla charges you 20k to 25k for a new battery and its not really worth it for something like a Tesla model 3 that the battery is roughly the same price as the car, so the owner sees no point at changing that battery. Even if we replace petrol or diesel powered engines, the batteries become even a bigger problem since they are not even recycle-able with all of those chemicals that are not possible to separate. Second problem comes in when we want to replace the petrol powered cars. There are more than billion cars on the road now. Even by 2035 there is no way that all of these cars can be recycled and re used for electric cars of the future. We are talking 1 billion automobiles excluding bikes that each weigh over a ton of metal and plastic and copper. The system of these cars is out of hand. Some companies are rejecting this standard like Ferrari or Lamborghini. The emission of todays supercars are so close to 0 that it doesn’t make any sense to purchase an electric car. In my opinion rather cheaper cars like VW group cars or Toyota’s automobile industry should go electric that will be more budget friendly for the mass market. Something like bmw M or AMG has such a low volume of sales that it isn’t even worth spending money to make the soulless and electric. companies like Bugatti, Porsche or Pagani altogether sell 1/5 of what Toyota RAV4 sells in just North America. It is an absolute waste of time and thought to make these masterpieces electric. Third of all, electricity comes at a cost. The money that government spends on a single wind turbine is absolutely insane! And lastly, it is absolutely impossible to make Asia go electric. People in Asia, specifically Middle East is already struggling with finding their own daily electricity to just turn on the lamp and you expect them to buy a 33k dollar Tesla that is already 13times more harmful than what they have in the parking. Just imagine trying to replace only the taxis in India or china! Good luck tho…

    • Nikan Pakbin

      December 24, 2021 at 2:21 pm

@Kyle Nolan I don’t see that in car community these days. I’m a proud fan of petrol powered cars and it isn’t this easy to replace all of these vehicles just under 15 years. A billion dollars is a bold amount of money to spend on such a project. if you claim that producing Lithium-ion batteries aren’t any harmful, then how some companies like Tesla or Lucid are still using coal mines and fossil fuel powered sources to make these batteries. If this is what you call eco friendly I don’t know what else you call ecological? Last of all, you might be right about China since they are selling pretty well there. But how about India, Iran, Saudi Arabia, the whole Africa, somewhere like Kazakhstan or Azerbaijan is the struggle with electric car sales. These people can’t even keep their country clean, and you want them to buy an electric car. My point here is, that for this transformation you need 50+ years for companies like TATA or Mahindra that are have the sales of the mass market for budget vehicles to think of an affordable option for people. Managing this market is way harder than you think. Japan and China or Korea are already ahead of the game but the rest of Asia is struggling really bad…

Electric cars is a fantasy of cost savings. 500 tons of earth have to be moved to get to the minerals that are in ONE car battery.
In looking on what it takes to produce electricity with other than fossil fuels, the cost quotients actually rival that of fossil fuel.
Wind and solar power production is simply never going to take over because both entities do not have the energy density to substantiate gross amounts of usage.
Another energy source needs to be discovered or utilized.
The aspect of promoting electric cars with the current reasoning, is total bullshit.

The cars, buses, trucks etc is nothing compared to the 65.000 transport ships that pollutes as much as 1.000000 cars each. Besides. most of the power used to power electric cars are coal produced

It would still help. That’s the point. It’s a step. Are we just supposed to do nothing because we don’t know the fix-all answer? Lol

    • Jurgen Hutmacher

      December 23, 2021 at 8:14 am

@MrBallen It would help basically nothing. We need to start with the big companies who can afford to change. Not us consumers. I can’t afford a 30.000 dollar electric car. What i am saying is that all out cars would not cause global warming alone. Its a spit in the ocean. thats how little it is compared to factories, transport ships etc.

      December 23, 2021 at 10:38 am

@Jurgen Hutmacher you can go look up the statistics for yourself, but you’re incorrect about that. The road-transportation sector is the biggest contributer to greenhouse gas emissions by far. I think we are just seeing a lot of back lash to ev’s because of a false narrative being pushed by those in the petroleum industry.

  39. Jurgen Hutmacher

    December 22, 2021 at 4:16 pm

And do you know what roads are made of?

No doubt Mrs Pamela Morgan service is really good, I invested $22,000 and made a profit of $81,000 after a week. I still wonder how she gets her analysis

Most people remain poor only because friends and relatives stopped and advised them against Investing and trading Bitcoin and forex trading while the wise ones kept Investing and growing financially.

More Climate Cult Lies, if you really want to use Electric for more things then you’d be pushing Nuclear…………..Beyond that anyone that thinks the Climate is in Crisis is not a serious person and these Antiscience Clowns need to be ignored, ridiculed and ostracized for their Science Denial.

This is bullshit. What proportion of eléctrical energy these cars use is made by Green energies? If It’s not generating that electricity by Green energies, It’s the same thing, but called Tesla.

There are plenty of existing organisations aiming to electrify transport. Why are we giving this organisation no-one has heard of, a billion dollars? They don’t even appear on the first page of google results for “Drive Electric”.

No one still rides a horse to work because it isn’t logical. EVs still have that bar to reach! Common sense is gone in media and politics, but not with everyday humans.
