You don’t need it. You aren’t required to get a new computer every year they make a new one.

This chip seems to be insane! If the performance and efficiency claims are even somewhat true, it will be amazing! The whole industry will likely be changing within a few years because of this.

Yo man, have you noticed they said just TO PREVOUS APPLE MAC? not X windows laptop or PC?

They just took one out and shoot it. They may have better optimizations than WIN Laptops cos all components are build in-house and built in it too and you get almost all apple apps.
Apple’s like a mircosoft for its own apps. Which is why it is so popular for creativity work like musicians etc…

If I compare just share power and gaming capabilities from let’s say from #1 RAZER laptop, it’s gonna crush MACs
But they are also at 2-3000$ price range.

Also MAC has only APU chip. Means GPU wont be as powerful in games. If you want to game new titles like Valhalla AC or CyberPunk
this laptop wont do. It has only 2.7 TFPs
compared to newer high end GPUs they are having 40TERAFLOPS+
Older GPUs like 1070 have around ~7TFPs

      Ryzen 4900H(S) has 1.7 TFPs

Plus VRAM is a big player in current gen games.

Where I’d say this laptop comes in handy is creativity work and nth else.
Windows laptops are good, even better LINUX if you know your way around.

What i dont like is they compared MAC against PCs… I wonder against which one. For 1000$ I can build incomparable PC with that amount of money. That means no RGB and some used parts, but used doesnt mean bad, it means cheaper and if you know how and where to look it can saves huge chunks of money for better quality components.
But then you have also Displays that you put chunks of money into it and peripherals like mouse keyboard and speakers etc… then mics and headsets…

But once you buy all of that you are set for the rest of your life. all you have to do is resell it every year or two add 10-20% more and you have new and better toy again. Like with iPhones or cars, value drops overtime so you can have the most out of it by resell it when it is still fresh.

But i cant imagine MAC packing awesome display quality be that good colour spectrum, resolution that is at least QHD (1440p) or more.
Quality chassis with quality keycaps that dont get mushy or that are not mushy even better. And that is all for just $1000 …
It is true what Apple claims to be. that no laptop in that price range compares to windows laptop than then won in that segment.
I mean look at Razor 2500$ laptop. it’s awesome same goes for ASUS laptops. But I just dont know… Too good To be True.
Quality Mic, maybe even speakers? Good Camera?
Things they touched are not even looked by other companies that make windows laptops, they just ignore it..
But I dont like keycaps to be honest.. But a little thinner bezels would be appreciated anyway.. every mm of 13″ laptop scree counts..

@Klemen Kovačič I’m mostly referring to laptops and not desktops. What Apple has shown looks really promising. Yes, they only compared them to previous MacBooks, and yes, the graphs in the livestream were stupid but on the website it is at least much clearer. We will have to wait for reviews and especially comparisons against Windows laptops before we can know how great the chip actually is.

Windows laptops, especially gaming laptops like Razer ones have dedicated graphic cards so of course they will play games better but for what it is, the M1 APU is right now looking mighty impressive. For the price range the MacBook Air is in, you will probably have a hard time to find a more powerful Windows laptop and definitely not one with as good battery life as the M1 chip MacBook but like said, we don’t know much yet so can’t be sure. Apple will most likely also have dedicated GPU’s in their upcoming MacBook 16” with Apple Silicon next year and who knows, maybe that will be impressive as well.

As for desktops, Windows PC’s will probably always be better for most people because they can just build a PC exactly how they want it. I would probably never buy a Mac unless it’s a MacBook because I do really prefer Windows over Mac on desktops. It’s only MacBooks that I find interesting, especially if the new M1 chip actually is so powerful!

But if the M1 chip is so powerful and efficient, then we will probably so more and more manufacturers moving to ARM on the Windows side, at least in mobile. AMD and Intel may have to move to a BIG/little design and maybe even ARM sometime in the future. I know that Intel are already working on a BIG/little design for Alder Lake and beyond, although still on x86.

Either way, it will be really interesting to see how Apple Silicon compares!

      November 10, 2020 at 9:39 pm

@ne0tic Yea I agree. but for 1000$ this is almost like a 2000 to 3000$ worth laptop.

      AMD already purchased Xiling.
Same as Nvidia did with ARM. Nvidia is now rightful owner of the ARM.
The one company that supplies tech to Apple.
But for what AMD will do with Xiling, who really knows… Xiling is prob sth similar to ARM tech. Both companies will benefit from it in the future. their NET worth went for billions up or rather will go.

Tech future seems promising that is all i can say for sure, but macbook rn is another matter. I just hope they are quality enough to stay quality for at least 2 whole years.

      November 10, 2020 at 9:58 pm

@Klemen Kovačič Yeah, I mean, you’re not really buying MacBooks expecting the best bang for the buck. How much they are worth it depends on how well they perform and if they stay reliable for longer which many previous MacBooks hasn’t like you say.

It will be interesting going forward with Nvidia having bought ARM, well it hasn’t been approved yet but it most like will. Apple and Nvidia have never really been good friends so it will be interesting how they will work together in the future. Rumor has it that Apple got a perpetual license for ARM tho so Nvidia buying ARM probably will not affect Apple that much. Right now, Apple doesn’t really even work with ARM because they design their completely own architecture based on ARM unlike most other companies which just uses core-designs made by ARM so going forward Apple will likely continue on their own without really having to work together with ARM that much.

Yeah, tech future definitely looks promising and interesting!

So only 16GB of ram, for all the models. 16GB of ram for both video and system. They don’t seems to have a proper. meonory hierarchy. The memory limits are what one can expect from a SOC design. I notice PCIe 4 that is good.

Look, I love the MacBook and all I even have the MacBook pro 2020, but the battery is not as long as they said. For wireless web browsing, maybe about 4 hours. Video playback would be about 5-6 hours. Idk how they believe that the battery lasts that long.
