Film historian Tony Maietta joins WIRED to answer the internet’s burning questions about the old days of Hollywood and the U.S. film industry. When did the “golden age” of Hollywood begin and end? Why is the US film industry based mostly in Los Angeles? When were the first Oscars? Why was Marilyn Monroe such a transcendent star? What impact did Charlie Chaplin have on the art of film? Did silent film stars bother to learn their lines? Answers to these questions and plenty more await on Old Hollywood Support.

Loretta Young later admitted that Clark Gable had drugged and SA’d her. Due to her upbringing she believed it to be a moral failure on her behalf.

20:15 a black and white film with very modern pacing is The Invisible Man (1933). It has very good humor, no fluff, tons of tension and is a brisk film at only 70 minutes long

Adding to Tony’s comments at 5:30 about the Mid-Atlantic accent being used so that listeners could easily understand — this is still a thing! It’s why Australian and British singers sometimes use a slightly American accent when performing in the USA.

Sunset Boulevard’s last line is not only one of the most iconic, but also one of the most misquoted. And yes, Marilyn was a powerhouse. No one could EVER fill her shoes.

There wouldn’t have been a Dracula without 1922’s Nosferatu. 1927’s Metropolis was the first blockbuster sci-fi film and has some of the most innovative special effects that blows the minds of modern day effects artists.

  16. @neskire

    June 17, 2025 at 8:54 pm

Charlie Chaplin used special effects in some of his films. In the film Modern Times, a scene where Chaplin’s character appears to be skating on the edge of a tall building was achieved using a matte painting. The effect was created by filming the skating sequence on a studio floor with a ledge, and then integrating it with a photorealistic matte painting on a sheet of glass placed in front of the camera. This technique allowed for the illusion of Chaplin being on a dangerous precipice without actually putting him or the set in harm’s way.

Very interesting and enjoyable! However, we should all be clear that Thomas Edison did not invent the electric “light bulb“. Edison merely made practical what many others had already made possible. In fact, Joseph Swan demonstrated an electric lamp just under a year before Edison. A good reason why it’s been called the “Swan-Edison“ lamp.

GONE WITH THE WIND is not difficult for me to watch. It’s a beautifully made film. It’s one of my favorite movies. I have it on DVD so I can watch it whenever I want. SIDENOTE: I have never seen a more beautiful woman than Vivian Leigh is in the scene where Scarlet goes to Ashley’s B-day party. I say that out of admiration, not a romantic thing

I’m wondering what the definition of a “Film Historian” really is.
When I heard your comments about the child of Clark Gable & Loretta Young, I thought I had always heard something different. So I Googled it, and I was correct.
Loretta Young waited 19 months to adopt her child, not a “few” months as you claimed.
How can a “Film Historian” not get that information right when someone like me, just a regular old gal, who loves movies, can easily get the correct information??
Now I don’t know if I can believe anything that you say knowing that you have been incorrect about something you claim. 😠😠

  75. @OzSteve9801

    June 19, 2025 at 9:26 pm

Yes, Gone with the Wind was about slavery but it also gave its slaves character, something unheard of at the time. Clark Gable said he wouldn’t attend the Oscars if Hattie McDaniel wasn’t allowed to attend, but decided to attend anyway when she was refused entry. Marylin apparently had an IQ of 140 but knew that people wanted the “dumb blonde” act so she gave it to them. She was said to be friends with Albert Einstein. She was deeply insecure as a result of her childhood and always thought she needed others to support her.

4:21 also incorrect. The code was enforced by Hurst publishing, not Hollywood itself. The reason being, if you didn’t follow the code Hurst wouldn’t cover your film which meant to advertisements. Hollywood was not policing itself. Hurst is still located in NYC to this day

Anyone who dismisses Marilyn Monroe’s career hasn’t watched any of her films. What he says is absolutely accurate, whenever I watch her films, there’s no one else I want to look at. She’s just so good at drawing your gaze like that. And she had the most impeccable comedic timing.
And yes, she absolutely outstages Laurence Olivier in The Prince and The Showgirl. That movie was so difficult for her to shoot but ended up being such an amazing film.

EVERYTHING about the story, the characters, and the setting (although visually, it was stunning given its era). I wanted nothing more than to b-slap what’s her face off my screen. Very few times have I have a more visceral reaction to a film than to that one (and I have seen some awful films). Just hearing it mentioned prompted my having the same visceral reaction again.

There is a scene in Metropolis that was likely an erotic dance at the time. It is laughable now when it cuts to the men loosing their minds. I feel like that dance can be fixed with AI. Are there any other bad effects, poor sound, missing moments in classic films that come to mind? Easy fixes?

Many older films can seem boring to today’s audience who are used to short scenes and quick cuts. The older films are paced differently and, in some cases, feel more like a stage play. Regarding Citizen Kane, it doesn’t feel revolutionary on an initial viewing because so much of the technical advances and the cinematic language of the film became commonplace. It showed filmmakers new ways to tell their stories.

I love seeing the influence of early cinema on modern movies. Without Chaplin and Keaton, there’d be no Jackie Chan and Tom Cruise. Some of the most inventive scenes of today stand on the shoulders of silent giants, e.g. Keaton’s boat flipping scene inspiring shots in Inception and Euphoria, The Phantom Carriage being referenced in The Shining or the Cabinet of Dr. Caligari creating the blueprint of psychological horror twists for decades to come.

A line of dialogue cannot be “iconic,” nor can any sound at all, for that matter. A movie SCENE, however, Could be – and Swanson’s last scene in Sunset Boulevard IS.
Only Imagery is iconic – i.e., a person or thing whose Image is famous, usu. with the implication that it has become emblematic. (The word Icon, in orginal Greek, MEANS Image.)
In addition to being the most overused word on YouTube, Iconic is also, by far, the most MISused – misusers seeming to believe it means simply “widely known,” “instantly recognizable,” “memorable,” etc., without specific and sole reference to imagery. Increasingly, too, it is being employed, mistakenly, as a synonym of “very famous.”
This case of misuse has spiraled due to the YouTube Feedback Loop – wherein video-makers parrot and propagate each other’s speech errors.
A troubling consequence of such wide misuse is that dictionaries – as a matter of long-held policy (now in need of revision in this age of the viral Internet, for obvious reasons) – will update definitions to reflect vernacular usage, setting up a slippery slope towards our language’s ultimate debasement, driven insidiously by Synergistic Ignorance.

That film is the Blueprint for Sci-Fi and so much of what has followed can be directly traced back to it. – And no, the French 1902 film Le Voyage dans la Lune (Voyage to the Moon) isn’t the first Sci-Fi, it is far better categorized as Surreal or Fantasy.

I delivered groceries to Gloria Swanson as a teenager in 1980-82ish…. she morphed into her Sunset Boulevard character when I saw her in her 80s. As a kid had no idea who she was but my parents knew.

    – She lived at 2 East 73rd Street on the ground floor (corner of 5th Ave)
    – Always had a yam boiling in a clear pyrex pot on the stove
    – She actually had a bald man servant guy, maybe in his 40s I’m guessing
    – Never tipped me until just after her last marriage, then she tipped $1
    – First and only time she ever spoke to me was when I forgot her blueberries in her delivery one time. She opened the door, looked at me and said “Shame shame shame, isn’t that a shame.”

That’s all. Betty Ford tipped me $5 for a 1 block delivery. That was $5 in 1980. Yea Betty!

I loved that this discussion referred to scandals without some of the darker rumors clouding the light but not shallow tone they were going for.

I remember as a teen I was like why is Marilyn so iconic is it just because she’s pretty? So I started watching her films and she’s a capital A actress.

Definitely felt bad hearing the story and damage the black listing did to a titan star like Chaplin as it had long term effects on him and especially in the US. But then came that historic day in 1972. At that year’s academy awards, he didn’t just accept an honorary Oscar award, he also received the longest applause ovation in the academy history. Lasting over 12 minutes by those in audience as a profound gesture of atonement and industry admiration to this legend. As he walked onto the stage, you can see the emotions he felt when receiving such an immense ovation. It was an emotional moment for Chaplin as he even struggled to express his gratitude.

Marilyn Monroe was a dope fiend. Full stop. She wasn’t talented. She had the complexion for the connection and slept her way to the top

Munroe was a mediocre actress but a good comic actress although most of the jokes are about her being dumb or naive. She wasnt a great comic actress compared to say kathleen turner

    1. The late 60’s and 70’s are referred to as a ‘Silver Age’ among film scholars, not a second Golden Age.

    2. The Production Code mandated that screen kisses could be a maximum of four seconds, not five.

    3. The haughty accent that the East Coast boarding schools affected and spread among the American ruling class was the ‘Transatlantic’ accent, not the Mid-Atlantic.

*OLD HOLLYWOOD FACT:* Kirk Douglas brutally raped Natalie Wood when she was a teenager and he got away with it, because he was seen as a distinguished, older male actor, so everyone refused to believe Natalie when she spoke of it. F*ck Kirk Douglas.
