“The Lord is my shepherd; I have all that I need. He lets me rest in green meadows; he leads me beside peaceful streams. He renews my strength. He guides me along right paths, bringing honor to his name. Even when I walk through the darkest valley, I will not be afraid, for you are close beside me. Your rod and your staff protect and comfort me. You prepare a feast for me in the presence of my enemies. You honor me by anointing my head with oil. My cup overflows with blessings. Surely your goodness and unfailing love will pursue me all the days of my life, and I will live in the house of the Lord forever.” ‭‭Psalms‬ ‭23:1-6‬ ‭NLT

Very interesting takes on these characters. I would love to see a video where you go more in depth on just a couple (Arthur fleck for example). I have a feeling because of how many villains you were covering that Wired edited your responses down quite a bit.

@Shut Up I Am Your Mother I wrote some of my thoughts on Dano’s Riddler for the British Psychological Society’s website (The Psychologist) and related thoughts for Psychology Today, which should be up by Monday. The Wall Street Journal interviewed me about the film, which includes some other thoughts on the Riddler.

Brilliant dissertation. You’ve earned yet another degree. You’re now DoubleDoc, the greatest Batman villain of all because you thoroughly know everyone so well.

This gives you the innate ability to know everyone’s next move before they do. You may not be the best fighter but when you know what’s going to happen you don’t need to be.

DoubleDoc. And we thought Lex Luthor was the most brilliant of the bunch.

My only possible criticism of what was otherwise a perfect analysis was missing out on how Max Shrek was essentially an allegory for Donald Trump, like many 90s movie villains were, without trying to be. The only difference being that Shrek actually liked his son 😂

      March 25, 2022 at 3:38 am

When talking about the penguin you stated that he had a “Napoleon Complex” or “Short Man Syndrome” seemingly confirming the existence of such a personality trait. There’s multiple high quality studies disproving the existence of “Short Man Syndrome” and it’s widely accepted in psychology that it’s a derogatory social stereotype. So my question is, why are you perpetuating a derogatory stereotype?

Poison Ivy is a classic Histrionic woman. Her grandiosity is extreme, wealth oriented (gold digging) and a master seductress.

2019’s Joker was a Borderline collapsing into a Psychopathic state. He accumulates all of the beatings and trespasses against him until the psychopathic state (protector) takes over. It’s important to note he is not like that the whole
Movie he is collapsing into that final dark psychopathic stage…

Harley Quinn is a classic co-dependent. Joker in animated series is a Narcissist. He needs to be “mothered” by Harley Quinn and none of his “games” are that destructive. Mostly game plying and wanting “attention”.

Sometimes the most dangerous people alive are those who do not hold special powers, or titles, or authority. Sometimes the most dangerous among us are those who have simply lost the will to care for their fellow man or the pain their goals cause.

I guess this is a fun, innocent waste of time for those who like to indulge themselves in nonsense.
But sometimes I wonder: do some people think this is really profound stuff?
Are we taking seriously totally fictional, outrageous characters in what started out as cheap entertainment for pre-adolescents? You think the authors of these two-dimensional “personages” took them seriously? Of course not… they weren’t trying to bring forth any deeper understanding of the human condition (certainly not during the Silver Age.) They just wanted to entice little punks, such as myself, into coughing up twelve cents… what comic books cost way back when. The Joker, Penguin, Poison Ivy, et.al, were made up to play colorful outrageous roles doing ephemeral “battle” with the equally outrageous Batman and Robin team in some single 32-page pulp-paper magazine sold at the local drugstore.

The way he referred to the cat woman version with Halle Berry is kinda rude and as he described Anne Hathaway’s version right after with more consideration with the character development of Anne’s version. I felt in Halle’s that she too underwent a lot of changes in self confidence to learn how to become Cat Woman. I just wish he showed as much regard for hers as well as Anne’s. Even if the plot was not really the same the characters both are displaying their emotions and thoughts with how they have to adapt to their new lives.

I read it somewhere but found it interesting. Batman the entire thing is played out in Bruce Waynes mind after losing his parents. The entire cast of characters is his imagination running with the horror of his parents murder. It is entirely inside his mind. None really exist, his mind creates these characters to deal with the trauma.

It’s been theore as the scarecrow of Batman‘s villains is not actually insane that he’s just pure evil. Basically total antisocial personality disorder. In the past comic seat expressed a desire in scaring animals as a kid as a form of intimidation. Early warning signs of a serial killer. The only frightening thing about scarecrow is the fact that he tends to enjoy it or at least fascinated by it. It kind of reminds me a little bit of Freddy Krueger and his psychopathy.

I love what was raised about Jared Leto’s Joker. What people forget when commenting on this interpretation is that Joker in Suicide Squad is merely an extension of Harley Quinn’s story, told through her eyes, showing us the audience why Harley has this attachment to him as despite his awful, psychotic tendencies, he does show her affection she craves.

    • Emily

      March 23, 2022 at 5:56 pm

      March 24, 2022 at 1:32 pm

Good point. Actually, I explicitly said that but it didn’t fit the final edit of the video. We don’t really see that Joker except through Harley’s eyes and later in Batman’s nightmare (JL Snyder cut).

Becoming obsessed with someone else and trying to be them? I have never heard of this with BPD and it makes sense that ya wouldn’t because the whole thing is having an emptiness within ones SELF. We will shave our heads and get tattoos and even change our names but it’s not ever intentionally to become someone we are obsessed with, just trying to find what feels like “me” because the sense of self is, again, incredibly low. But again, we will seek it endlessly within our SELF, and when we don’t find it >>> feelings of eternal emptiness. The cycle continues. Just saying. Never head of BPD making folks obsessed with others.

Also never heard of people woth BOD being likely to stalk ppl. SMH the misinformation on this disorder!!!

    • Travis Langley

      March 27, 2022 at 12:38 pm

There is research on that and the stalker connection. Overwhelmingly most people with BPD are NOT stalkers, but studies (such as Meloy & Boyd; Sansone & Sansone) identify a large number of the non-psychotic stalkers as showing BPD – a clumsily nicknamed “fatal attraction syndrome.”

The dismissal of Leto’s version of Joker was brutally true. I love that dude spent about ten seconds on it and just immediately moved on abruptly.

      March 28, 2022 at 3:17 pm

Lol ikr. That entire movie was so poorly written. The characters were shallow af and you could actually see the actors struggling through the screen lmao.

“When Max presents his public face, he’s showing who he really is.” So Travis is saying the villain Mr. Shrek is not a psychopath that pushes people out of windows? Maybe this psychology professor isn’t familiar with “masking” and has a secret crush on the uber wealthy.

The moment this person said the Penguin had a napoleon complex, he lost all credibility. Every study into the so called napoleon complex has shown there is no discernable difference between short men, average height men & tall men in terms of aggresiveness and dominating behaviour. One study even showed that short men are less likely to be aggressive than average height men. Maybe it was the editing of the video but either way you’re perpetuating a derogatory social stereotype and you should correct it.

Ok so I have Batman and Psychology, is there a difference or should I also get Batman and Psychology 2nd edition?

    • Travis Langley

      March 27, 2022 at 5:16 am

Second edition has 3,000 edits, info regarding the past decade of movies and TV, some updated villain case files because there are new things worth talking about (for example, with Harley and the Scarecrow), a new re-introduction by Batman/The Batman executive producer Michael Uslan, a new chapter about Batman’s views on guns and killing, and a new chapter about Batman’s power to inspire people in both his world and ours.

What about Bruce Wayne as a villain? The richest man in Gotham City decides to use a violent alter ego to attack criminals instead of investing his wealth and power in citywide systemic change that would reduce the crime rate? Isn’t that a egotistical way of dealing with crime? Only he can be the savior or Gotham?

    March 26, 2022 at 8:56 pm

If Bruce Wayne is so rich, why doesn’t he pour more funding into Arkham so they can provide the doctors and treatments these mentally ill villains need? It’s because if he did, he wouldn’t get to be Batman anymore.

I think the scariest now was dano’s riddler, you got the egotistical megalomania of the riddler, with a little of the zodiac killer, and just a dash of jigsaw, the fact that he also got a following, and these people were willing to also murder is just chilling

His notation that we hardly know anything about Crane in TDK series speaks volumes of how much he was underutilized.

He needs to be better explored on the big screen.
