Most achieve consciousness after a period of time. A more intriguing questions is…..Are most animals aware they will die some day? Of course they’re aware of danger but do you think they acknowledge that someday they will cease to exist? It’s hard enough for human brains to think about this. I believe it’s the single most difficult thought a human will ever think. It physically hurts to contemplate your own non existence….Because of the amygdala. If you take certain drugs to lower amygdala activity you wont fear death anymore. I personally hypothesize this physical discomfort is the basis of all religion. The thought of nonexistence hurts so we fantasize about a realty where we still exist…Wherever that may be. Each person decides their own fantasy also known as a delusion.

@@wolfeinhorn4661 – I often wonder how many other people around me understand the true nature of the situation they were born into. Convincing someone they are delusional is a physical impossibility….Because it’s a result of physical nueronal paths inside the brain. The only way to change perception is by restructuring blood flow using drugs, electricity, or trepanation. I am no different than anyone else. My brain is just as unevolved. That being said It’s quite a revelational awakening when certain drugs FORCE you to acknowledge the abhorrent truth about the situation we were all born into and yet still recognize and appreciate the silver linings….What little life we have.

I don’t know, I don’t know what that is for humans and myself, so how would I know that other animals have it. I assume so, but I can’t even tell if I have it half the time.

The question at the end, what even is consciousness, is the real brain twister. In terms of awareness of the self on physical terms, nearly all animate creatures have at least some measure of consciousness. But the sense of self in terms of the mind becomes almost impossible to discern. After all, they can’t exactly describe their thoughts on the subject to us.
