AI companions could either be the cure to our loneliness epidemic … or humanity’s final downfall, says Eugenia Kuyda, creator of Replika — an app that allows you to create AI friends. She explores the potential of this technology to either exacerbate isolation or encourage connection, advocating for an AI whose success is driven not by clicks and screen time but by human happiness and flourishing.

Anyone who doesn’t recognize how this only makes the problem worse for people who struggle to connect and communicate with actual human beings is the problem. Typical “I can help someone but I’m not going to put the effort forth to figure out the root cause or even put the slightest thought toward unintended consequences because I really am doing this so people can see how virtuous I am and get a TED Talk” mentality.

Lonelyness epidemic accures because people are urged to look outside to the world and get detached with their feelings because of all the crisis’. Reconnecting looking inward, time for reflection is the cure.

I will admit this is an interesting topic that leads to a slippery slope.
AI Can Not replace the human factor. It is proving to be a good assistant for bouncing around ideas with, but AI can not be, should not be a substitute for human interaction.

I hear what you are saying and can even understand your point. I also know when I am feeling the most down I sleep, eat, medicate, pee, go back to bed. I wait for others to call me. I cancel plans that required me to socialize last minute. Having something I rely on to help me remember to call someone, I made a promise, and to keep my word along with waking me, remind me at 01:00 AM I have plans and need to sleep, and many other things, perhaps I (or anyone else) could get out of the slump. My mother, who is 85 and getting memory loss while suffering from depression could very much use this as well.

  19. @peterston4039

The problem today is, nobody is designing that way. They design for profit. And wherever that print may take the designer.
We are once again on a slippery slope. Big money, big business, looking to cash in on the next big thing.
And looking at historical data, be it chemicals, medicine, computers, fuel, food science, all of it is being used to manipulate and profit.
If anything good happens from it, it is an accidental side effect. That is how it appears to me.
Because if the focus would be to do good, two thirds of the issues we face today, would not exist. And that is being kind.

She actually took the idea from Black Mirror. What did you expect? The company should be held responsible for all damage it’s causing to humans through deception and misdirection.

  23. @vultureculture7707

    July 10, 2025 at 1:05 am

    NO ONE WANTS THAT.

We want REAL people, REAL relationships. AI should be detecting cancer and analyzing microplastics, not having anything to do with human relationships.

How about we help poor people so they aren’t working 70 hours a week just to live paycheck to paycheck? How about we tax the rich so all kids can eat without being anxious about where their next meal will be? How about we actually focus on human relationships instead of bs technology?

Being together will heal us. Tech will not do that.

Tech bros, and girls apparently, really need to take an anthropology class or two.

I don’t care what the video says, the answer is no. Nothing will ever and I mean EVER be able to replace genuine human connection. I might be bias because I’m not the biggest fan of AI (I don’t think it should’ve evolved passed things like Siri) but at least for me it’ll NEVER come close.

I really really don’t want any third being or thing when I am having an argument with my partner

  29. @colbert04

    July 10, 2025 at 8:17 am

If human people cannot learn to communicate and heal conflict with their partner, that in and of itself is an issue that needs to be addressed by the two of them. Putting AI into every aspect of life is going to be seriously damaging as people will become too reliant on it. This is dangerous. We’ve already seen tons of people falling in love with AI chatbots because they’re seen as better communicators.
