“For the first time, we are forced to consider the real risk of destabilizing the entire planet,” says climate impact scholar Johan Rockström. In a talk backed by vivid animations of the climate crisis, he shows how nine out of the 15 big biophysical systems that regulate the climate — from the permafrost of Siberia to the great forests of the North to the Amazon rainforest — are at risk of reaching tipping points, which could make Earth uninhabitable for humanity. Hear his plan for putting the planet back on the path of sustainability over the next 10 years — and protecting the future of our children.

This talk was part of the Countdown Global Launch on 10.10.2020. (Watch the full event here: .) Countdown is TED’s global initiative to accelerate solutions to the climate crisis. The goal: to build a better future by cutting greenhouse gas emissions in half by 2030, in the race to a zero-carbon world. Get involved at

“Ten Simple Things You Can Do to Help Protect the Earth

    1. Reduce, reuse, and recycle. Cut down on what you throw away. Follow the three “R’s” to conserve natural resources and landfill space.

    2. Volunteer. Volunteer for cleanups in your community. You can get involved in protecting your watershed, too.

    3. Educate. When you further your own education, you can help others understand the importance and value of our natural resources.

    4. Conserve water. The less water you use, the less runoff and wastewater that eventually end up in the ocean.

    5. Choose sustainable. Learn how to make smart seafood choices at http://www.fishwatch.gov.

    6. Shop wisely. Buy less plastic and bring a reusable shopping bag.

    7. Use long-lasting light bulbs. Energy efficient light bulbs reduce greenhouse gas emissions. Also flip the light switch off when you leave the room!

    8. Plant a tree. Trees provide food and oxygen. They help save energy, clean the air, and help combat climate change.

    9. Don’t send chemicals into our waterways. Choose non-toxic chemicals in the home and office.

    10. Bike more. Drive less.”

Why is nothing being done about climate change?
Making the world a better place isn’t profitable, and the people who seek to make a profit at all cost will rest at nothing at acomplishing that goal. Sadly theres no movement to truly confront this capitalistic greed in any meaningful way.

@Forest Green. The climate change industry isn’t profitable? I think you mean it isn’t economical. Al Gore profits off climate change policies. . .

This video is a fact that content creators get more money than scientists. In this case, the pseudoscientist decided to put his career in the pocket by promoting a 7 minutes video of world catastrophe. For the haters, hold your horses before the fire, I am environmentally conscious and teach my children to be so. I strongly believe we MUST take care of our planet and there’s no other way because is just the right thing to do. I just don’t get this sort of cheap promoters using storytelling techniques above the science.

    Change and the profit motive…
In order to effect the kind of change necessary to stop and then reverse the approaching Apocalypse, a new economic system is necessary. But, the term “new” scares those in charge to the point they’ll keep their heads in the sand of their gated communities. So, can a global effort, one that involves every citizen willing to work, be enough to push back against the looming fires, floods, freezes, and other global catastrophes. It can if profit can be realized by those willing to do the work.
There is enough credit to pay for change if we’re willing to borrow against the value of our lands and waters. It’s estimated the value of real estate in the US alone is north of $70T. Add in the value of harvesting our coastal waters and the US is probably worth more than $100T. Now consider the collective of each continents resources, and there’s plenty of equity/credit to pay for a massive shift away from consuming resources without regard for sustainability, to a system the rewards not just sustainability but encourages repair as well.
Someone, or some group somewhere must step up to the plate and swing for the fences or we’re doomed to the sunburned zombies that will be crossing borders by the tens of millions.

Children know only what they are told… dont pretend that they ‘see’ anything you don’t want them to see or hear.. as for the fires jn Australia, even the CSIRO could not link them with ‘climate’ changes… but they did link them to the enormous build up of fuel that used to be removed through fire management burning for decades until all the recent ‘ experts’ knew better… its amazing how smart everyone under 40 is these days, despite most not actually doing anything except theorising.

Fever is a human reaction against virus, earth temperature rising is a reaction against us

  19. Jimmy Kelly

    October 16, 2020 at 8:20 pm

According to CO2/global temperatures charts from ice cores that stretch back 800k years we have passed the tipping point. The earths processes have already been set in motion. The earth wants to be in the cooling period. We have artificially kept the temps up and at this juncture of our civilization we have a real problem. If we were to go carbon free we will allow the natural process to accelerate into a deep freeze reminiscent of the snowball earth of eons ago. Our mission should be of balance of an already manipulated climate system. The amount the population emits needs to be controlled so that warming is negated. Green plants/trees/vegetation is absolutely crucial in order to maintain the balance. The deserts of the globe needs to be made green through solar distillery lakes to use the natural process of evaporation to re-condensate as rain to green the Sahara/gobi in order to do two things. 1.take out existing fresh water out of the oceans.2 pull CO2 out of the air through the veg Iration natural process. Geo-engineering on a global scale is absolutely essential if we are to have any semblance of a normal climate environment.

I read about 30 of thas a comments. I read Manifestos about corporate greed. Comments about how it’s the old peoples fault, about buying light bulbs or planting a tree, and comments that we are just doomed. I wish we would start talking about the third rail of this climate crisis, especially these expert. Namely, our extreme overpopulation. Oil and gas extraction aren’t the cause of deforestation, overfishing the world’s oceans, and declining water tables in much of the world, too many greedy mouths are. Population reduction is the one thing that positively addresses all our environmental concerns. Long term, population reduction must happen or no matter what we do technologically, or through changes in behavior, life on this planet will fundamentally change.
The most sickening thing about this, is that it is always put in terms of our own survival. Our survival is not in doubt. We are like cockroaches. We are the most adaptable large animal on the planet. We will survive the world we are creating. Unfortunately many of the amazing animals we share this planet with, won’t.
The sad/hopeful thing is, we have the ability now to return this world to the garden of eden it once was, AND have a prosperous future.

Just stop pretending the humans are in charge of anything & least not their own ‘evolved’ behavior. Human are a collective megacancer that will NEVER voluntarily give up any & all economically extractable energy. Same as all life forms. No choice. No free will. Tipping points & runaway climate change means there is no way to make it go back to the way it was (stable). There are many dozens of positive self reinforcing feedback loops underway & humans can’t stop most of them. A few can technically slowed, but the humans would need to alter their core drives & behaviors so radically as to be an entirely different species. There are a great many things that are ‘technically’ possible, but are not humanly possible & especially not collectively possible. This is not my first rodeo. I’ve listened to much ‘save the planet’ cheer-leading & followed the science & consequences (CC since 1988 – Hansen) since I was a teen many decades ago. I’ve heard all the plans, ever more dire warnings & untold empty promises. It’s past the time to stop. The cruelest cut of all is giving people false hope. Just stop it. It’ll be much better for the planet if we just took our bow & walked of the evolutionary stage with some decency & dignity……for once.

    —‘Facing Extinction’—

“Give up the fight with evolution. It wins. The story about a human misstep in history, the imaginary point at which we could have taken a different route, is a pointless mental exercise. Our evolution is based on quintillions of earth motions, incremental biological adaptations, survival necessities, and human desires. We are right where we were headed all along.”

I humbly suggest to the splendid scientist Johan Rockström to change the focus of his talk. He cannot speak like a scientist in favor of the planet, presidents of nations like Donald Trump (USA) and Jair Bolsonaro (Brazil) do not believe in science.
Instead, the scientist needs to say that corporate profits, big fortunes, countries’ domestic product will be of no value if the planet goes out of control.
It must be said that the floods caused by the melting of the ice will cause the United States and the European community to spend trillions of euros to contain refugees and to shelter homeless compatriots.
Today’s world is in the hands of those who only understand the language of money. Unfortunately, these leaders only understand those who speak the same language.

Funny how no one ever mentions the worlds biggest CO2 polluter when they talk about climate change. It’s always the Wests fault despite China emitting 1/3 of the planets CO2 emissions (and rising) .. When there is a plan to tackle that problem, I’ll start showing this fear mongering more respect.
