As someone who puts up signs for the public, it sure would help if we had a functioning educational system. Literacy is pretty low and common sense and problem solving is even lower. Curtesy towards others feels like it’s at an all time low as well

I’m subscribed, long time fan, but this is the first time Ted has popped up in my YTshorts algorithm.

Reaching the end of a short, dying to hear the rest of the presentation instead of just scrolling, reminds me of the fascinating long-form content I used to love here.

Thanks for snapping me awake, looking forward to catching up with Ted Talks

I’m surprised there wasnt a sign saying to only flush toilet paper or “do not flush _____”. I see those everywhere

    • @XoIoRouge

      June 21, 2026 at 7:11 pm

@trealelizabeth9176 those signs aren’t actually in the same vicinity she’s talking about. She is taking about sign DESIGN and how they help guide us. The signs you’re talking about are warning legality signs, because flushing the wrong thing can cause damage which will lead to lawsuits.

    • @trealelizabeth9176

      June 21, 2026 at 8:02 pm

@XoIoRouge How would that lead to a lawsuit? The company is the one that owns the building and they don’t know who caused the damage so there is no one to sue. And if it was for legality then wouldn’t every business have these signs?

  10. @chaoscommandant

    June 21, 2026 at 3:58 pm

I love it when such unnecessary, handwritten, almost illegible writing also contains 5 spelling mistakes per word, or when the grammar is completely bananas.

  11. @kvtiebug

    June 21, 2026 at 4:14 pm

Wait why is that actually so cute of humans 😭 we’re like “I see that a lot of people are having issues, let me gently guide them” idk that’s kinda wholesome

    • @TheDuck666

      June 21, 2026 at 7:42 pm

The moments where we whose to help rather than judge are always the best imo

  12. @NuclearAmouri

1:23 that “no chip” sign could be because there’s a card skimmer

“Push then pull” is because that electric door strike doesn’t have pre-load capability. Essentially, it is jammed by the pressure of the door and can’t release unless you take the pressure off. Newer strikes have fixed this problem, so I would agree it is bad design.

  18. @williamedward3198

    June 21, 2026 at 7:54 pm

    “Redesigners”

  19. @wednesday55

    June 21, 2026 at 8:59 pm

I would have thought the “this is a light switch” sign was covering up the light switch… which just happened to be above the fire alarm.

    I’m gonna need an arrow.

  20. @Leftysrev3nge

    June 22, 2026 at 1:32 pm

Part of the issue of ingenious human problem-solving is that people still don’t read the signs.

    June 22, 2026 at 1:43 pm

Red light switches and outlets in hospitals typically mean that if the power goes out and the generator is powering the hospital, the red switches and outlets are connected to the backup power from the generator while the normal colored ones are not as they are not a necessity. I always have to explain to the family visiting patients what the colors mean bc they don’t want to touch them.

  27. @theders249

No sign would convince me to use that light switch. Either reinstall a normal switch (literally any other color) or I’m just gonna always assume it’s a fire alarm

  28. @MrINBM

    June 22, 2026 at 4:07 pm

Soo we need to make sure functional design is actually optimizing for the human brain.. not just what is assumed to be efficient

  29. @barrycole5930

    June 22, 2026 at 4:09 pm

So I am a flight attendant trainer. Every 18 months, flight attendant certifications expire and they need to be renewed. Per the FAA rules, they have to come through training again for a one-day refresher course. So I teach the same material every single day to thousands of flight attendants, some of whom have only been on the job 6 months and some who’ve been here for 50 years.

Needless to say, patterns emerge extremely quickly. We have signs like these and disclaimers absolutely scattered throughout the training day 😂 we’re constantly telling the FA’s “make sure you do this!” Or “make sure you bring that to your next lesson!” Or “please don’t touch this button, just pretend!” Over and over again on repeat lol

Assign that I love is in most pit toilets in national forests. It says something like “please don’t put trash in the toilet, it is very difficult to remove.”
It reminds good people that there is a human on the other end of their actions, and that that human is going to have a difficult time if they proceed. I just think it’s really beautiful, and for me very effective.

Things that are used frequently are easier to get confused by when there are slight variations. Doors, POS card readers, etc are things that are so ingrained in our use that just one aspect being different than expected throws what should be an easy autopilot

  48. @HollyRockets706

    June 23, 2026 at 1:27 am

Is this the difference between design and service design? Love it

    Wtf have TED talks become?

  50. @TamaraSummen

    June 23, 2026 at 6:08 am

Subtitles are needed, not just for those with disabilities but so people can watch your videos without needing to plug in headphones. If you want people to watch your stuff, it needs subtitles

  51. @zigge1989

    June 23, 2026 at 6:38 am

WHY is that light switch still red? Why?

  52. @the_switchboard

You should see the signs all over the shop I work in.. like “480volts. That means don’t stuck your tongue on it moron!” 😂

  54. @trofl

“Fixing the original design for actual people” is so relatable, especially as someone who works between software engineers and users.

Of course they’re designers, they make the-signs

  58. @hwolfe0911

    June 23, 2026 at 11:49 am

I feel that some of these are not represented as the presenter described. Some “coaching” appears to be ensuring accuracy or simple notice. For example, with the broken clock instead of allowing somebody to possibly be swayed, not realizing that the clock is off it’s just information telling you that it is such. Additionally please use other door. Could just be a courtesy for a person stating that one door is locked while the other one is open instead of allowing somebody to possibly access a door which is locked become a little inconvenience and or partially frustrated.

  59. @petermoegenburg1873

    June 23, 2026 at 12:03 pm

    Bad original designers

  60. @cheasychu

One of the zoo’s here in my country was obviously made with accessibility in mind so there’s a sigh that says “stairs are awaiting you” on one of the paths.
