My friend Norm Jones engineers at DOD made the US military communications satellite system. He put one up in New Orleans during Hurricane Katrina. It was the only communication for a time. The iPhone could be communication when regular systems are down.

This would have been really helpful after the hurricanes that hit Florida earlier this year which knocked out cellular service for many days.

I hope that in the not too distant future this will be standard in all phones everywhere and will also include the rest of the world, calls and video calls via satellite. But I think the satellite infrastructure will have to improve to get there.

Hey CNET, can you find out for us consumers if this satellite feature increases the amount of radiation that the cell phone will emit or receive between itself and the satellite. Usually, satellite connection devices require a bit more energy to communicate with a satellite than a typical phone with a cell tower. Will this be more harmful to our health, or increase the of cancer to the user? Thank you. Im sure many of us would benefit from knowing this information.

This is soooo cool. If you’re in _exactly_ the right place, outdoors, not near any buildings, trees or suchlike, and you have one of those 5 specific emergencies, and the emergency that your _are_ experiencing doesn’t stop you reading small text, nor does it impair your ability to keep moving around to keep a satellite lock – you’re in luck!
Using the phone as a light reflecting device to attract attention is probably more feasible.

I think Starlink option should also be mentioned, when presenting satellite services to mobile phones. Starlink will be much better, in my opinion, because it will imitate ground mobile station and we will not need to have newest iPhone π However Apple was first to have this service available.
