For anyone who believes poetry is stuffy or elitist, Amanda Gorman — the youngest inaugural poet in US history — has some characteristically well-chosen words. Poetry is for everyone, she says, and at its core it’s all about connection and collaboration. In this fierce talk and performance, she explains why poetry is inherently political, pays homage to her honorary ancestors and stresses the value of speaking out despite your fears. “Poetry has never been the language of barriers,” Gorman says. “It’s always been the language of bridges.”

The TED Talks channel features the best talks and performances from the TED Conference, where the world’s leading thinkers and doers give the talk of their lives in 18 minutes (or less). Big surprise, you’re 27 seconds in and you already made it about race and gender – congratulations, how thought provoking. On the other hand, race-baiting poetry is a good career choice for you, since you seem intellectually immobilized to do anything else.

YES!!! Definitely an inspiration to poets, speakers, women, young kids, I mean anyone really. Such praise and elegance in her recital today. Is there a part that you love most? How do you feel about “We’ve learned that quiet isn’t always peace”? I would love to hear your thoughts. Would you want to hear more from Amanda? I definitely do!

    • Sarah Hardy

      January 21, 2021 at 1:00 am

@My Abdias it was the “grieved, grew, hurt, hoped” part that made me sit up and really listen. The cadence was like a rap, well to me it was. I thought the whole thing was very clever.
She seemed to almost play with the words and her gestures and tones gave meaning and subtlety to the poem whilst there was a hint of steel. Absolutely fantastic. I hope to know more of her work. I’m not sure if it would have the right gravitas if I read it myself, but I really want more for her.

    • My Abdias

      January 21, 2021 at 1:09 am

@Sarah Hardy I love how you described it as a rap. Interesting concept! I believe poetry has similarities to rap because of the lyrical words… which she clearly had today. I’m sure this is not the last we hear of Amanda. I see many organizations reaching out to her for more recitals or for US to get to know more of her and her beliefs & thoughts. Thank you so much for that reply. ☺️

Being an artist myself, and as odd as it is, I was never much interested in poetry before, but this young lady (half my age now and younger than my son!) got me! This was incredible, and by far the best performance at the inauguration and the only one with a message! Wow! Thank you so much for this, Ms. Gorman, and all my love to you! <3

Amanda Gorman really added such a beautiful infusion of passion and elegance to the inaugural festivities. America was left so scorched and parched from the most recent antics of civil unrest in our Nation’s Capitol. She poured cool, much-needed water onto our land, to help to quench America’s thirst for freedom and democracy. Thank you Amanda. Godspeed to you. Well Done.

  49. Mirko Bozic

    January 21, 2021 at 10:33 pm

If there’s one thing I learned as a writer in my part of Europe, it’s that tying your poetics to any kind of politics is always a bad idea, because ideologies have an expiration date, whereas sublime, authentic poetry does not. Which means that, when the ideology changes, certain authors-though gifted- are labeled as cultural pariahs. For authors, supporting politics is rather being willingly enslaved by it, but poetry should be about freedom. I was told by American colleagues it’s apparently unpopular labelling her inauguration poem as a monologue declaring political ambitions, which it obviously turned into. I’m sure she’s talented, so it’s a mystery to me why she needs it.

How do you use your voice when social media deletes your account or contacts authorities and has you arrested? Is it really a political choice if the things you say are status quo and not even controversial?

  51. Casey KirkHart

    January 22, 2021 at 7:42 am

A Black woman with speech differences, she’s an amalgam of Kamala Harris and Joe Biden. That’s poetry.

    • Mirko Bozic

      January 22, 2021 at 1:36 pm

You described her perfectly! Though there’s not much poetry in that, merely a writer with political ambitions. That’s legitimate, but remember how things went for Peter Handke, Gabriele D’Anunzio and Knut Hamsun. Of course, the girl isn’t praising a Fascist leader, but too often certain artist are remembered primarily for their political beliefs, which is always a disservice to their work.

I am sorry, why is old white men mentioned? And a second time at 2:56 a phone call from a white man?? Why is the color of his skin so important to mention?
Is this reversed racism? I am not a racist and never understood racism today and what quite recently still happens in the US criminality against black people for nothing has to be punished and taken away. It is in my opinion a question of mentality and education (ok, difficult to start a debate here. I am also aware of the terrible colonisation of African people and the slavery story) but today we should try to be together not for our skin color but for many other reasons. Please dear Mrs Gorman , check the many excellent African poets and writers (old and young!!) please!! And why would white people (young or old!!) not be allowed to write poetry?? Maybe I am missing something here? Dear lady, You are not the only one descending from people who suffered!! Also generations of white people suffered and were exploited. Read history please (African and European). American racism should stop!! I agree that is terrible. – It is also clear you come from a loving family. Many talents cannot develop because of lack of love and support. Well, you were the lucky one to read your poem at the President’s inauguration. There are many other good poets (young ànd old lady) that did not have this chance! Try to be less harsh please.

    January 22, 2021 at 10:21 pm

I admire her eloquence and courage in her craft. But I hate to express myself about others by their color when we are all human beings. Instead I could say if necessary identify by culture like saying American, Latin and so on. In both parts that she talked about white men I would’ve prefer her to say “Like a old man Benjamin button” and “That call from this man or boss telling me not to speak about politics”. Just mentioning the persona title is good enough and makes me give more respect to the content. Racism will never heal if people always need to make that type of statement. I’m not white but I know that I’m a Latin American which never talk about my family or anyone as my brown skin boyfriend, the white aunt and light skin cousins with black grandparents. I will never accept racism or implement it on my kids mind I only see regular people till I see any extraterrestrial newcomers. Lol…

What a racist. And yes, she still has a speech impediment, “a gwait powet.” I hate when I get a phone call, and it’s usually from a black woman… ugh, when will you all wake up to these disgusting people. Here’s some poetry, “I have a dream that my four little children will one day live in a nation where they will not be judged by the color of their skin, but by the content of their character.” Instead of making race irrelevant, she makes it a weapon against the other, in this case I am the other, because of my skin color.

holy wow, with greats like Amanda Gorman, and Brandon Leake, hope is restored rising up out of 2020-2021’s dimmest descents, out of such sad threatening overwhelms of illiteracies and atrocities, soaring up that humanity’s clarion voices might dispel each new wave of threatening oblivion, with true human power to transcend the empty and shed the vain, fully and sustainably, every new year, day, and generation

I wish this talk existed when I was younger, as a high school kid scribbling lines, or as a college junior with people telling me my writing sucked. It answers a lot of the doubts that I’ve had in writing and in any creative field. It’s amazing. Thank you, Amanda Gorman.

Seeing this supercilious face spouting tired, polemical clichés gives the word poetry a smarmy edge

Poetry is art and expression. It can be healing or political. It can be however the writer wants to convey his or her thoughts

At least Majakovskij wrote some good poems in his youth. Whereas this woman started directly from borign, valueless propaganda. It reminds me of some literary figures, that you can find in Huxley’s or Zamjatin’s works: the alfa, the state’s poetical engineer, that has beautiful clothes and expensive lifestyle for free and can mathematically create poems celebrating egemonic new mass culture. She said nothing surprising, nothing unexpected nor innovetive point of view. She said exactly what a computer might have predicted her to say. But, we have already seen this film, very soon nothing will lasts of all this ideological “literature”

Amanda Gorman is my new favorite! My seventh grade English students have enjoyed reading her poetry and listening to her powerful speech! We are currently working on comparing and contrasting her Inaugural poem with Gwendolyn Brooks’ “Speech to the Young- Speech to the Progress-Toward”

The platitudes are strong with this one. It’s all just noise to distract us from the truth. Left, right, center, black, white are all meaningless terms. People like this young lady have really good intentions but in the end they just end up perpetuating the system that oppresses us all.
