Loving where you live means caring for the people who make that place home, says cultural critic Hanif Abdurraqib. He invites poet Sarah Kay and Chris Duffy, host of the podcast “How to Be a Better Human,” to his hometown of Columbus, Ohio, to show off what makes it so special. From sneaker shops and record stores to public parks, Abdurraqib talks about how he builds community — and how anyone can learn to love their hometown.

This episode is part of a series of bonus videos from “How to Be a Better Human.” You can find the extended interview on the TED Audio Collective YouTube Channel.

He is such a lovely man.
I love markets, everywhere I go, because they are traditional meeting places. Essential. People are pressed together by necessity. Shopping, in comfortable societies doesn’t work like that. It’s just about me me me, not need. Middle class people don’t usually cross over with other classes. They are too intent on not losing what they have in a pressure cooker world, until something shakes that pressure cooker and they realise what’s out there. Who even has time to look out of the window?

Coaches kept telling Maxwell Pearce to stick to the fundamentals. Good thing he didn’t listen. A Harlem Globetrotter and artist, he went on to build a global reputation for gravity-defying dunks and a theory that the same playful rule-breaking is what powers progress in every field. In this joyful talk, he makes the case that play isn’t the opposite of serious work — it’s the secret ingredient behind it. (Recorded at Play@TED on May 14, 2026)
