He is such a lovely man.
I love markets, everywhere I go, because they are traditional meeting places. Essential. People are pressed together by necessity. Shopping, in comfortable societies doesn’t work like that. It’s just about me me me, not need. Middle class people don’t usually cross over with other classes. They are too intent on not losing what they have in a pressure cooker world, until something shakes that pressure cooker and they realise what’s out there. Who even has time to look out of the window?

“Truth is the real oxygen for democracy,” says Vjosa Osmani Sadriu, the 6th President of the Republic of Kosovo. As a child of war, she once longed for someone to save her people. Now she’s been in the rooms where decisions are made — and she’s never forgotten what brought her there. In conversation with solutions journalist Angus Hervey, she reflects on what it takes to defend democracy in a world where truth itself is under threat.
