In this edition of “A World of Difference,” Korey Kiepert, owner and engineer with The Gravity Group, goes through the 8 main types of roller coasters and breaks down how they work as well as the decisions behind why they get built in the first place. Korey explains the difference between a giga coaster and a strata coaster, as well as what separates a “wild mouse” from a “mine train.”

If you think this stuff is interesting, check out ElToroRyan and his “Problematic Roller Coasters” series. Goes even more in depth to the design and operation of some really interesting rollercoasters, definitely worth a watch!

I hate Roller Coasters, on school trips I’d willingly be the one who looks after everyone’s stuff and is really just there for the funnel cake and to not be in class. On my last school trip I went on a few of the bigger rides at Hershey Park, and after three I went back to being the one who waits with everyone’s stuff.

I studied engineering in college, and found the engineering of roller coasters quite intriguing, but those strata coasters just make me say, “why would I ever want to simulate being in a plane crash without the plane” I’m good 400+ feet is long enough to be cognisant of what could happen if it goes wrong, and it’s enough time to realize when it’s gone wrong lol

The strata coasters are excellent rides. Kingda Ka is a little bumpy but Top Thrill Dragster at Cedar Point is insanely smooth and an extreme adrenaline rush. It’s a good thing that no accidents have occurred on any of them, coaster and ride incidents are luckily extremely rare

Excellent video. Very interesting, informative and worthwhile video. About 35 years ago, I was considering a position at Disney Imagineering and had a tour of their R & D facility and part of the job was to attend theme park conventions worldwide and study others’ developments. One of top executives at the imagineering facility drove a flashy peach colored cadillac.

When talking about 4D coasters he fails to make an important distinction between free spinning and controlled spinning types. On a controlled spin 4D coaster, such as the depicted X², the angle of the spinning seats is actually controlled by a second pair of rails on the track such that seat orientation is the same for every ride.

S&S worldwide is currently working on a new type of coaster they’re calling the Axis coaster, which, think the 4D coaster (which, that has two different variations, not just the one, 4D and 4D freespin, 4D freespin you’re spinning freely, 4D the ride experience will be the same for that coaster every time) but change the axis of turning so that the train itself (train being a chain of cars) as you go through things like inversions, will actually turn, and that could be used to keep you upright throughout the whole ride, you could probably make an Axis Freespin, there’s a lot of different possibilities with it that I could see happening

3:50 The part about vertical g-forces is illustrated wrong. Air time is when you feel zero G like at free fall, not negative G. Also going downhill does not increase experienced g-forces, you get those when the direction you are going changes (when the hill comes to the bottom and starts going up again).

I gotta make a correction on 4D coasters: Not all 4D coasters have uncontrolled spins. Rides like X2 and Eejanaika have a seperate track that controls the spin of the riders so you get the same ride every time. However, rollercoasters like Batman the ride at six flags fiesta texas or intamin zacspins do not have a controlled spin so it is a different ride everytime

That’s so funny that he mentioned a major aspect of the wild mouse rides being to question if they’re even safe. I’ve been on a ton of rollercoasters in my life, but the wild mouse in Blackpool is still one of the scariest that I can remember. I genuinely felt like I was going to get thrown off the track, that thing was crazy. The seats are tiny on it too, me and my friend are both pretty skinny and could barely fit. A+ would ride again.

not to correct the engineer but the 4D coasters shown don’t actually rotate freely. The track has 4 rails instead of 2, and the distance between them controls how the seats rotate on the car. So it’s a controlled ride and it’s the same experience every time, but they’re some of my favorite rides. There are coasters that spin freely, but they’re not actually what’s considered a “4D coaster.”

I’m surprised he didn’t mention the hybrid coaster thing that’s been so popular lately.

Taking on old wooden coaster and re-trackng it with steel so that can potentially go upside down and give more airtime than it would before. Six Flags LOVES doing this (Magic Mountain’s Colussus becoming Twisted Colossus, SF New England’s Cyclone becoming Twisted Cyclone, etc.)

Better question would by why do some models that are not that great, get copied a lot.
    While good ones do not.
