I see she’s wearing a TFCC wristband during the pullups, why is that? Does it support? I’m asking because my physician told me to get one.

@Crow The bands were advised for a different ailment. I’m simply curious why she’s using them in that manner.

The main problem with crossfit is how much useless stuff is shoved into the very small bag of actually beneficial exercises. If you want to build muscle safely, crossfit is not for you. 3 polyarticular exercises with proper form and high protein intake are the pillars of all muscle building.

People don’t want to hear that. They don’t want simplicity, especially when they start out because they think it has to be complicated and they want shortcuts. There’s no (natural) shortcut to getting jacked. Consistency, long-term goals and solid 5-8 exercises total doesn’t sell.

I thought the pull up question was about chest-to-bar (C2B) pull ups, not the different variations. If your gym is only programming C2B and not regular pull ups, they are doing the members a disservice. C2Bs can be programmed to give more advanced athletes greater challenge (i.e. you need more strength and muscle stamina to do C2Bs) but there’s nothing wrong with normal pull ups at all. People need to master the regular pull up progression (ideally starting with strict) before moving to C2Bs in any variation.

Gah!!! The editors for this video were not on point! The “thruster” clip was a clean & jerk, not a thruster! No squatting and a re-dip for the jerk instead of a push press that you do with a thruster.

Just took a quick look at CraigMEdwards twitter feed and it sure looks like he has his clients do a lot of Crossfit style movements and workouts. It didn’t take too much scrolling to find one of his athletes doing a single arm dumbbell snatch…

    • Rob

      March 18, 2021 at 11:37 pm

@Armour783 I’m not sure it’s super fair to call anything “CrossFit style movements”. Olympic lifting, power lifting, plyometrics etc existed long before CrossFit. They just adopted and packaged it in a particular way.

All of those lifts and movements are merely tools. It’s probable CrossFit coaching had improved over the years, but I can tel you I coached in a sports performance facility where we worked with kids all the way through adults, pros, and even a number of Olympians, including running several training camps for Chinese National teams.

I have never, ever, seen an elite athlete do anything like a CrossFit WOD. While it’s absolutely challenging, the truth is CrossFit generally neglects the science of adaptation.

When we train, we are applying a stress to elicit and adaptation, be in strength, endurance, or whatever. There are well-studied principles that guide this stuff. Namely, the SAID Principle (specific adaptation to opposed demand), general adaptation syndrome, and progressive overload.

The idea of just don’t a bunch of different and hard stuff randomly, keeping it different all the time, all but guarantees people will not only experience less benefit than they could, but will also be more prone to injury.

Yes, plenty of people have gotten in better shape with CrossFit, but that doesn’t mean it’s smart. Being hard doesn’t make it good.

I just want to ask one question does crossfit build muscles faster than bodybuilding or it just a strenght training workout

    • Emily

      March 18, 2021 at 2:29 pm

Depends on where you’re starting and what your end goal is. Bodybuilding typically favors size, not necessarily strength. Crossfit favors strength, not necessarily size. To some extent they go hand in hand but some of the strongest people in the world (by their bodyweight) don’t have huge bulging muscles. If you’re just starting out, really any form of resistance training will provide enough stimulus to build muscle.

  39. Draculapin

    March 18, 2021 at 12:32 pm

how can a butterfly pull up be more efficient in a workout than a regular pullout. This move alone is the reason why people make fun of people doing crossfit

    • Darnitthelma

      March 18, 2021 at 12:43 pm

      Looks injury ready to me

    • Emily

      March 18, 2021 at 2:18 pm

Because strict pull ups use pretty much only your biceps and lats. Butterfly uses almost your whole body: Core, shoulders, hip flexors, back, arms. If you’re doing strict, you might only be able to do 15 before muscle fatigue sets in and you literally can’t do any more without a 10 minute break. Recruiting more muscle groups means you can do a lot more of them while working more of your body. The thing that a lot of people miss is that NOBODY should do butterfly until they can do at least 5 strict.

    • Chinanese

      March 18, 2021 at 10:09 pm

@Emily that is just not true… you Are not really engaging any muscle groups because of all that momentum your creating with that butterfly movement.

Crossfit got a bad rep because the statistics for injuries in Crossfit was artificially blown up.
However, I still don’t like it. Every strength sport like Strongman, Weightlifting, Olympic Lifting, Powerlifting, Bodybuilding, Calisthenics, et cetera teaches controlling movement. CF teaches to move fast and with acceleration/swinging which makes it impossible to add genuine stimulus and progressive overload. Sure you can put on a vest, but it seems like a terrible idea as your mass increases and accelerating your bigger mass just increases the explosive strength needed to initiate, but not hold or eccentric muscle usage. Literally your only progression you can record is how long you could do the exercise over and over within a short time and that’s all. Maybe repetition as well, but still.

Yes, of course there is. It takes probably a decade of the right nutrition and exercise but it is definitely possible. Nobody becomes that muscular on accident though and just working out is not going to make you look that way either. Don’t be scared of the gym.
