Less than seven percent of people worldwide have a bachelor’s degree — and for many, this is simply because the cost of university is too high, says higher education executive Adrian K. Haugabrook. In this barrier-breaking talk, he introduces an innovative approach to expanding access to higher education by driving down costs and rethinking three key things: time, place and how we learn.

I feel like the barrier is already too low. Far more people get college degrees than actually need them, and many have great difficulty paying off the cost. Higher bars of entry would incentivize people to only go to college if they really need to.

The progression of everyone’s well being directly relies on education. Real education. What this man is proposing falls directly in line with getting everyone ahead of the game which is equal to progress as a human race overall. It’s a very wise path for us all to go down. It will make everyone a more valuable member of society at every level.

    • AJX

      February 16, 2022 at 9:19 pm

@Neighbor as long as the education actually adds value, I encourage it. However, vast sections of our current education system do not add value, so proposing to expand the education system is a waste of resources. Fix the system, then expand it.

Education doesn’t matter; knowledge and expertise matter. Education is valuable only insofar as it advances those two goals.

In this day and age, with all the knowledge you can access through the internet, there is only one barrier to “higher education” and that is your brain. If its a pea, well, sucks to be you. Conflating degrees with knowledge, intelligence and the ability to gain wealth indicates that you brain indeed resembles a pea.

To me there are three major concerns for this idea to be implemented:
    (1) It would be VERY difficult to make sure all those external credits are evaluated properly and equally between different evaluators and institutions. It would require a standardized evaluation system/process for these course credits. If not people would end up getting degrees while missing key knowledge modules required for a degree (lowering the caliber of graduates).

    (2) This method may work for some of the arts and business programs but would not be practical within sciences and engineering, where courses all have laboratory components (often with expensive equipment and/or programs required).

    (3) The pandemic has shown that online courses are plagued with acedemic dishonesty issues on both assignments and testing far beyond those typically seen with in-person courses. At the least all midterms and finals should be written on the campus.

      February 16, 2022 at 10:36 pm

While i agree somewhat with your point 3 I think it’s more of a failure of modern test taking that asserts a highly traditional view of education and individual (competitive) assessment. Instead institutions should structure exams that encourage and possibly reward collaboration, fact finding (with internet), and using efficient modern tools like programs or software. If you were to try to solve a list of differential equations by hand at a real job you’d be fired after awhile because of the time difference of someone using appropriate software.

  13. 2Evil2Hope

    February 16, 2022 at 9:28 pm

These types of “alternative” approaches already exist with online courses. The other ideas he had would be rampantly abused to meet quotas.

    February 16, 2022 at 9:37 pm

Higher education is meant to be just that, higher than the rest. It’s a modern idea that everyone should have higher education that doesn’t really fit if we look at things historically. Now you’re welcome to believe that not having access was the problem for most and it’s true, but it’s equally true that higher education is meant to keep the dumber among us out so trying to provide ways to allow dumber people in is actually going backwards. There’s a reason the best schools deny most people if *you* are not smart enough nothing else about who you are matters you shouldn’t get in. You don’t want to live in a society where it’s easy for dumb people to get high knowledge professions that leads to disaster. Imagine your child needing a live saving surgery, do you want the doctor who aced almost every test and was at the top of his class or do you want the guy that only made it due to lowered standards?

    • Zenn Exile

      February 16, 2022 at 10:31 pm

you’re higher than the rest. Higher Education is a media buzz term. All education should be free for every child willing to put in the work. Period. You’re a fukpotato if you think otherwise.

Many modern schools have disability offices now that can help students get accommodations of different kinds to succeed and adjust to their needs. For example even something as “simple” as adhd can get you a closed individual room VS taking an exam with many individuals. Other disorders can get extra test time, alternative testing methods or help in looking over your exam with professors to figure out getting partial credits and finding solid ways forward.

    • Dextozz

      February 17, 2022 at 5:53 am

In my country there are separate lists for entry of people with disabilities. When taking an exam, you’re not competing with thousands of people, but probably one or two, at most.

_As he sat on the Mount of Olives, the disciples came to him privately, saying, “Tell us, when will these things be, and what will be the sign of your coming and of the end of the age?” And Jesus answered them, _*_“See that no one leads you astray. For many will come in my name, saying, ‘I am the Christ,’ and they will lead many astray. And you will hear of wars and rumors of wars. See that you are not alarmed, for this must take place, but the end is not yet. For nation will rise against nation, and kingdom against kingdom, and there will be famines and earthquakes in various places. All these are but the beginning of the birth pains. “Then they will deliver you up to tribulation and put you to death, and you will be hated by all nations for my name’s sake. And then many will fall away and betray one another and hate one another. And many false prophets will arise and lead many astray. And because lawlessness will be increased, the love of many will grow cold. But the one who endures to the end will be saved. And this gospel of the kingdom will be proclaimed throughout the whole world as a testimony to all nations, and then the end will come._*_ Matthew 24:3‭-‬14_

*_“But when you see Jerusalem surrounded by armies, then know that its desolation has come near._*_ Luke 21:20_
*_“So when you see the abomination of desolation spoken of by the prophet Daniel, standing in the holy place,(…)_*_ Matthew 24:15_
_Forces from him will arise, desecrate the sanctuary fortress, and do away with the regular sacrifice. And they will set up the abomination of desolation. And by smooth words he will turn to godlessness those who act wickedly toward the covenant, but the people who know their God will be strong and take action. Daniel 11:31‭-‬32_
_And from the time that the regular sacrifice is abolished and the abomination of desolation is set up, there will be 1,290 days. Daniel 12:11_
*_(…)then let those who are in Judea flee to the mountains. Let the one who is on the housetop not go down to take what is in his house, and let the one who is in the field not turn back to take his cloak. And alas for women who are pregnant and for those who are nursing infants in those days! Pray that your flight may not be in winter or on a Sabbath. For then there will be great tribulation, such as has not been from the beginning of the world until now, no, and never will be. And if those days had not been cut short, no human being would be saved. But for the sake of the elect those days will be cut short._*_ Matthew 24:16-22_

*_“Immediately after the tribulation of those days the sun will be darkened, and the moon will not give its light, and the stars will fall from heaven, and the powers of the heavens will be shaken. Then will appear in heaven the sign of the Son of Man, and then all the tribes of the earth will mourn, and they will see the Son of Man coming on the clouds of heaven with power and great glory. And he will send out his angels with a loud trumpet call, and they will gather his elect from the four winds, from one end of heaven to the other._*_ Matthew 24:29‭-‬31_

*_Because you have kept the word of My perseverance, I also will keep you from the hour of testing, that hour which is about to come upon the whole world, to test those who dwell on the earth. I am coming quickly; hold fast what you have, so that no one will take your crown._*_ Revelation 3:10-11_

_But we do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, about those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve as indeed the rest of mankind do, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose from the dead, so also God will bring with Him those who have fallen asleep through Jesus. For we say this to you by the word of the Lord, that we who are alive and remain until the coming of the Lord will not precede those who have fallen asleep. For the Lord Himself will descend from heaven with a shout, with the voice of the archangel and with the trumpet of God, and the dead in Christ will rise first. Then we who are alive, who remain, will be caught up together with them in the clouds to meet the Lord in the air, and so we will always be with the Lord. 1 Thessalonians 4:13-17_

*_“But concerning that day and hour no one knows, not even the angels of heaven, nor the Son, but the Father only. For as were the days of Noah, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. For as in those days before the flood they were eating and drinking, marrying and giving in marriage, until the day when Noah entered the ark, and they were unaware until the flood came and swept them all away, so will be the coming of the Son of Man. Then two men will be in the field; one will be taken and one left. Two women will be grinding at the mill; one will be taken and one left. Therefore, stay awake, for you do not know on what day your Lord is coming._*_ Matthew 24:36‭-‬42_

_Know this first of all, that in the last days mockers will come with their mocking, following after their own lusts, and saying, “Where is the promise of His coming? For ever since the fathers fell asleep, all continues just as it was from the beginning of creation.”
    2 Peter 3:3-4_

*_“For God so loved the world, that He gave His only begotten Son, that whoever believes in Him shall not perish, but have eternal life. For God did not send the Son into the world to judge the world, but that the world might be saved through Him. He who believes in Him is not judged; he who does not believe has been judged already, because he has not believed in the name of the only begotten Son of God. This is the judgment, that the Light has come into the world, and men loved the darkness rather than the Light, for their deeds were evil. For everyone who does evil hates the Light, and does not come to the Light for fear that his deeds will be exposed. But he who practices the truth comes to the Light, so that his deeds may be manifested as having been wrought in God.”_*_ John 3:16-21_

Repent now of all your sins (stay away from all sins) and abide in the Savior and Lord Jesus, the Christ, (Yeshua the Messiah) with all your heart, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.

I went to college. 10 years later, the barriers to education in that field I got a degree in were gone. Removed. Like learning web design and coding are gone today. Data analysis gone. What do universities really teach? Much of “the trades”, and coding is now one of them to me, aren’t at university. I do think Art, Engineering, Science, Anthropology, English (Lit), Liberal Arts, and things still valuable to society should be taught at universities over 4-10 years (Medical Doctors and Engineers who try to replace them for 8-10). Even computer science, true computer science, can be at university. However, they need career paths and right now the trade schools and apprenticeships offer that. Car repair? An AA degree from a CC could double your salary, but so could 3 years in a garage earning a paycheck. So Universities need to look at their core competencies and execute on those goals. Not trying to absorb the trades and throw 2 years of GE’s around it. I enjoyed my education (I wish I valued it then more), but I would not have done the same today.

This is all good and dandy but education is about teaching but making money…even if these institutions find God and want to educate…specialized fields that often need specialized equipment will sky rocket in cost because they can’t take advantage of these changes fully. Maybe that’s still better though but in the end it’s all about the monayyy

This whole idea seems to imply an underlying assumption that all learning and all credentialing can or should be reducible to some sort of common currency.

The things that we are currently expected to have learned or achieved in formal educational settings are different than the things that people learn or achieve in the course of various kinds of work. My point ISN’T that one is greater than the other. That’s the opposite of my point. The real point is that it is not possible to work out algebraically how to make a certain amount of one equivalent to a certain amount of the other, because they are DIFFERENT things.

Yes, we do need to refine the way we assess and credential, but it’s not as simple as saying “boom–you learned a lot of stuff doing XYZ… here’s a bunch of course credit.”

Higher education is a myth. Only go to Uni (University) if you can not learn a (practical) trade.
The only people who should attend Uni are people in wheel chairs. They are a good fit. And they should all go to Uni before anyone else. Especially able bodied sports people. A degree in basket ball? Ha Ha Ha Ha Ha…….I assume it is a joke. No?
