@henryg3313sure but we’ve seen from hundreds of years of data that it’s not that easy for many. The priority is to stop the damage and those glps help people immensely.

My father was a morbid alcoholic. He would drink 2-3 40s of liquor every day for my entire childhood through to my mother’s passing at the age of 60. I spent every day of my life taking care of an _apparent_ high functioning community leader. The details are as bad as they come, apart from violence since I am no flake. I did drink some as a kid, but I drank heavily in my marriage responsibly (we raced yachts). When that fell apart I drank to consumption to forget the past. It worked. My father doesn’t drink anymore (he just called so I’m off for a visit). It wasn’t the pills, or my effort that made him quit, it was he simply finished. My mother passing played a large part. I know (knew) dependency is acute and paramount, so the advice I always took and gave in that regard is to not use “stuff” as a crutch. You want something you can afford, do it when you can enjoy it, else wait for the drama to abate. I never drank alone btw, I was/am very active and smoking doesn’t bother me 🙂

Similar story with me, but instead of running, I fixed up a 90s mountain bike and started riding it almost daily. If only I had discovered this in my 20s as a proper anxiety reliever, boy, how different my life would’ve been. 2 years now without alcohol and I couldn’t imagine going back. I feel like I have control of my life again and am healthier than I ever have been as an adult.

Sober… Why not just drink in MODERATION?!

    • @713_Rose

      November 3, 2025 at 2:12 pm

Not everyone can. For some it’s all or nothing.

    • @adamadict

If people could drink in moderation, they wouldn’t be addicts.

For those really struggling, try the sinclair method. After 15years of trying to quit, this medical intervention was the only thing that created the gap to work through to sobriety. Any questions, drop me a reply

Letting go of any unhealthy habit isn’t just about removing something—it’s about rediscovering yourself. I love how Edith reframed sobriety by reconnecting with what brought her joy before the habit ever entered the picture. That’s a powerful reminder: true change isn’t only about discipline, it’s about replacing what drains you with what fills you up. This is such an inspiring perspective on how to build a life that feels good from the inside out. 💫

  15. @Pintevact

    November 3, 2025 at 6:13 pm

Insightful conversation. This is a nice reminder that sobriety isn’t about stopping a behavior but redesigning daily systems that make healthier choices easier. Edith’s return to childhood pleasures is a sharp, actionable example: replace a cue-to-drink with a low-friction, high-delight habit, measure what sustains you, and build social or environmental supports around it.

Real change isn’t just quitting a habit — it’s rebuilding the parts of your life that habit used to fill. Sobriety is not the end of fun; it’s the start of finding what’s real, what’s honest, and what actually makes you feel alive.

Why not try AA? It’s free and there are meetings everyday – my best friends are sober in AA and I’m having more fun than I ever did drinking. I’ve been sober a long time now and still go to 2 meetings a week but a lot of people go less. It’s actually the easier way to sobriety and it’s worldwide.

I still remember reading Edith’s piece about her first year sober. Especially the part about drinking being a shortcut at first, and then becoming the destination. That really resonated for me. I wound up quitting a few years later (about 4.5 years ago, now) and I still think that was one of the most relatable things I’ve ever read about quitting drinking

The TED Idea Search wraps up in Amman, Jordan, in a 2,000-year-old Roman amphitheater and in front of a crowd of 4,000. What unfolds inside those stone walls is something the series hasn’t quite seen before: speakers shaped by the weight of living in a region the world tends to define for itself. From a mountaineer who turned grief into motivation to a therapist rewriting the Arab world’s language around mental health, the final city makes the strongest case yet that the best ideas can come from anywhere.

Watch the full talks from the TEDxAmman Idea Search:

00:00 – Intro
3:24 – Rehearsals
16:00 – The Talks
36:28 – Deliberation
38:48 – The Winner Is…

The most interesting ideas often come from the most unexpected places. We searched the globe for ideas with the power to inspire, motivate and change lives — and we found them at @TEDx events around the world. The TED Idea Search follows extraordinary speakers from 9 countries competing for a spot on the TED main stage in Vancouver this April.
