Nolans never used CGI or any special effects. He was literally there in space filming when Matthew McConaughey passed through the wormhole in Interstellar.

Yeah, I think the fixed statement should be he uses cg as little as he has to

There’s a difference between CGI and VFX i think. Creating the entire planet background like they did in Avengers infinity war was CGI, whereas cast went to Iceland to film the Dr.Mann’s planet. The little embellishments done to enhance the shot would be done with VFX/SFX.

@Vedant Upadhyay this is true. There’s multiple scenes where they could have shot at an isolated location on earth and just say its like another planet. Tho I feel like he meant the physical set as the scenes inside the spaceship could be counted as more real than cgi. Tho the scenes with the black hole, I think screened a lot of it. As McConaughey was in a lot of it especially inside the darn thing.

@Vedant Upadhyay CGI is a type of VFX, just one of the many VFX tools at our disposal. Little embellishments are indeed usually done with CG these days. VFX isn’t a singular tool or program, it just means “visual effects”, however you do it, which CGI falls under. Color grading, denoising, etc., are also VFX. On-set effects are VFX. Also I think you’re a little confused. For instance, Two Face’s face in The Dark knight is CGI VFX.

Batman gliding into the Hong Kong skyscraper is CGI (he had to do it). The world bending and twisting to dream logic in Inception is CGI. Etc., Etc. Even directors like Nolan that do their best to avoid CGI VFX still have to use it sometimes.

His reply makes sense if it was ten years ago, with photoreal cg it doesnt matter if its practical because either way it looks real, both images are represented by pixels
