I miss dancing! I danced ballet, both American and modern, Jazz and tap dance for 12 yrs. It got to be too expensive taking 5 classes/week along with new Pointe shoes every month or so. Unfortunately, I was In 8th grade when I was at my best and a teenager, so of course I dropped out bc it “wasn’t cool” to dance at that age. (yeah, right!!! The teenager brain…ughh🤦♀️) Although I never mastered the Fouettè, I considered myself a great dancer and I performed as Snow Queen in the Nutcracker my final yr, which was such an honor. Watching this video made me start dancing around my house, bringing back so much nostalgia. I think I may join a dance class in the near future. I still have all my leotards and ballet shoes! 😂 like she said, anyone can dance if they have poise and grace and can keep a tempo.

I’d like to see the men’s variation (if there is one), but definitely a man/women combo and they types of ballet they can do together. This was very interesting.

Since pointe is so damaging to the feet, I honestly wonder why it is still standard. Do you see it being disallowed in the future?

I appreciate her ability to take something that seems so complex to a non-ballet dancer like me and break it down into its smaller components. She made it feel approachable and increased my appreciation for this art form. I loved her dance sequences and the scaffolding teaching technique she employed in her explanations. I hope she takes up teaching after future retirement. I can definitely see her being an incredibly effective teacher for future generations of ballerinas.

I would hate to see her toes and toenails. They’re probably destroyed for the sake of her art. And no, everyone can’t do this. Can you imagine a 400lbs man or woman doing that?

Joy Womack, After watching your interpretation of 21 Levels of Ballet, I started watching Tchaikovsky: Swan Lake – The Kirov Ballet, for the first time. In fact I have never watched any ballet before. I am very pleased with the way all the elements of music, dancers, costumes and scenery tell a story in such a unique expressive way.
As a computer scientist myself, I made information exchange my profession. And its delighting and humbling to feel what machines may never be able to understand.

WOW! This illustrates perfectly both the complexity and the extreme level of control over the body, while making it look elegant, ‘ easy’ and beautiful. A bigger contrast with my own body [I am a quadriplegic with cerebral palsy] seems impossible. BEAUTY IN MOTION.

Maybe it’s because I do the English style of ballet, but some of the things shown are different than what I know😅. For example, her e face and e carte, as well as her third and fourth arabesque were completely different to what I was taught.

Ah, the poor woman – having to claim that there’s THREE main schools of dance, and one of them is American! I’m glad she managed to get a disclaimer in there, at least, but I do wish content creators wouldn’t force people who know what they’re talking about to make inaccurate claims. I do realise that WIRED is American, and that the editors probably thought they needed to localise this video to make people interested, but seriously, guys – there’s enough falsified information out there as is, so please don’t add to it. The US is not, and never has been, a major player in the world of ballet.

Balanchine has it’s own unique style though which is why I believed she referenced it, e.g. in the preparation and landing of pirouettes.
Tamara Piety
June 27, 2023 at 6:22 pm
Are you mad? The NYCB is one of the best in the world and the Balanchine style is definitely one of the most influential in the world. I would have described more than 3 schools, but it is absurd to say that there is no American style.

This is the best “beginner’s guide to watching ballet” I have ever seen! I started watching ballet because of the show “Dance Academy.” I had never realized how extremely difficult this art form is, nor how much dedication is required to become, and to remain, a professional ballet dancer.
YouTube Channels which would probably appeal to newcomers as well as experienced viewers and dancers are “Ballet Reign” and “Hannah Martin RG.”
Thank you for making this video! 🩰🙏💐

June 27, 2023 at 5:36 pm
As a dancer, I personally disagree with some of her placements/rankings of difficulty (because, for one, a chainé turn is way easier than an attitude in a lot of ways and worlds easier than going on pointe, and spotting is one of the first things you learn in ballet), but I really respect her overall message

my ballet school always taught third arabesque as both arms are in front of you, opposite arm as leg is up slightly higher than it would be in the first arabesque position, and the other arm is slightly mower than it would be if it were in a second arabesque. i dont know if i do a different type or if my school just teaches differently, but it doesnt really matter. anyways, great quality video! this was really cool to see!

I really love that there are all different levels of ballet so that anyone can learn and dance. I’ve wanted to dance ballet since I was a child and took classes but they pulled me out when I started showing signs of connective tissue problems. I hope to take adaptive classes when I can afford to because I’ve always been passionate about ballet and sad that I couldn’t dance ballet.

Lovely video. People have forgotten that “Ballerina’ is actually a title. There can be many principal women in a ballet company but the company may only have one Ballerina.

That hasn’t been the case since the 1960s and even in Italy (where ballet was invented) the word dancer translates to ballerino/a, and as such were not applied solely to the most accomplished of dancers. That was more so a _foreign_ practice.

@oliverdownunder9397 It’s factually researchable; hence why the term “ballerina” is used across the board today. Prima (Assoluta) and Premier Danseur Noble are those reserved for the most accomplished principal dancers. But most of all, type the word “dancer” into Google Translator and have it set to Italian.

Professional ballet, sure. It’s incredibly competitive and difficult to get into. But my adult ballet class literally has people in their 70s, people of all body shapes, etc. It’s fun. I injured my hip pretty badly and don’t dance anymore, but I still bust out a port de bras sometimes, because there’s so much you can dance and express with just your arms.

As a figure skater and an adult gymnast who is taking a beginning adult ballet class (I took some ballet in college about 20 years ago, and taking class again), I’m really beginning to see how so closely connected ballet is to these sports. I’m really hoping to see some big improvements when I get back onto the ice in August, and when I’m able to get back to get back to my gymnastics gym in a few weeks.
BTW, her fouttes (sp?) at the end were beautiful!
