It’s a bit shouty, I can’t watch these videos in the room with my wife because of the volume 😬

  12. Larry Butler

    December 25, 2022 at 10:48 am

$2,000 in tires every 25K miles! Boy, were really saving money spending $60,000 on a Tesla over our old Chevy, ain’t we?

    • Colin Gould

      December 26, 2022 at 1:03 am

No. Maybe $1000-1500 max, even expensive OEMs for Tesla are like $1200 for set. Cheaper/better last much longer too. Still more expensive, but not that bad!

Really interesting video. I didn’t realize EVs worked best with different tires. And I didn’t know EVs weight so much more.

    • ipcam Talk

      December 26, 2022 at 1:41 am

They dont work best with different tires. Most of these EV tires give up grip on dry wet snow for range. This could make the difference between an accident or a near miss.

Good Video! Hopefully there will continue to be enough competition in the tire market to keep prices reasonable, even if they prices do rase a bit for extra capability of EV tires and for inflation. I predict this will be the case.

  19. Gideon October

    December 25, 2022 at 3:32 pm

While I enjoyed this video, you’re opening statement “electric cars need different tires” was automatically defeated halfway through the video when you said you can just get regular tires.

  20. Barry W

    December 25, 2022 at 4:20 pm

Driving gently will make any tire last. I have 50,000 miles on the original set of Ecopia 422 Plus tires on my e-Golf and I expect to get another 10,000 miles out them.I do rotate every 10,000 miles.

  21. voxmobius

    December 25, 2022 at 7:26 pm

Still on my 2015 e-Golf’s original tires so with 7+ years & at 65K+ miles on ‘em, tried looking for EV tires. Couldn’t find dealers listing LRR or load (HL) as filter. Tire dealers need to get in the game and add such filters to their websites.

  22. Wilson Lam

    December 25, 2022 at 10:54 pm

Michelin certainly aligns with your pet theory. The most expensive tires I have ever purchased were for a Model 3.

    • Colin Gould

      December 26, 2022 at 12:58 am

Ironically the much-superior Michelin CrossClimate2’s I got were notably cheaper than the $300+ OEM MXM4 Primacies, and so far are lasting a LOT longer, MUCH better tread life, and much better rain/snow performance… still expensive, but under $250ea… their Pilot Sport All Season4 are perhaps better (more summer/performance, less winter) and are even more under $250/tire

    • Scott Kolaya

      December 27, 2022 at 9:52 pm

@Colin Gould I bought CC2s and my economy went down the toilet. About 10%. Over the life of the tire, that’s about $750 for me. They do handle great in the snow, but I now get snow tire economy year-round.

    • Colin Gould

      December 27, 2022 at 10:18 pm

@Scott Kolaya how long have you been on them? Mine started at 260wh vs 240 lifetime, but that was on lots of cool fall hwy road trips w preconditioning… now after 6-12k, I am getting 240-250wh/mi. Close to normal. Lost only 1-2/32″ tread.

    • Scott Kolaya

      December 28, 2022 at 12:22 am

@Colin Gould Almost a year but only 8k. Honestly the $700 would be the gas equivalent in my other car. I get about 180-190wh/mi all summer long, this summer it barely hit 220wh/mi 90% local roads. Which isn’t a big deal in the summer, but in the winter in the teens, it ruins my most frequent long trip that I used to make without stopping or slowing down or reducing heat. Now I either have to drive about 5 mph below the speed limit or go without heat because there’s no real convenient chargers. I’ve borrowed my son’s wheels and the range comes right back. It’s a tiny bit better with more wear, but still not great. It probably depends on what tires you came from, how much you lose. Mine where Michelin Energy A/S.

One more reason NOT to buy an EV

  24. J C

    December 25, 2022 at 10:59 pm

I feel like somehow the dealers will figure out a way to make brake jobs more expensive. Me: “But isn’t the regenerative braking doing more slowing down for you?” Dealer: “Screw you. Pay me.”

  26. pepeshopping

    December 26, 2022 at 3:17 am

    Sure!
Give me your money with those stupid “low resistance” tires that really give you nothing with their shallow threads (that’s how they make them low resistance) and their mediocre/low performance in the wet!

  28. rob379

    December 26, 2022 at 8:06 pm

Tire business is corrupt. They keep using “safety” as reason to sell you 4 tires.

  29. Devin Daniels

    December 26, 2022 at 9:36 pm

Yes tire prices will go up just like everything else. But will you actually be getting a better tire tomorrow than you could/would today? I guess that’s “wear” the rubber meets the road 😅

  30. Teslapped

    December 27, 2022 at 1:33 am

So, if you put EV tires on an ICE vehicle, do they last longer and have lesser noise?

  33. T1Oracle

If you don’t floor it at every stop, your tires will last longer.

    Hi!

The recent price of Michelin Primacy tires for our 130,000-mile Tesla model S at Costco from two plus years ago saw the tire prices for the same thing rise from about $900 to $1100+. The house (business?) always wins. Get used to it.

  40. Scott Kolaya

    December 27, 2022 at 9:44 pm

0:32 EVs can weigh a 1,000 lbs more. Yea they can, but they usually don’t. How about giving us the average, not the max. The average EV has about a 900lb battery (which includes structural components of the car), all new EVs have skateboard designs that use the battery case as the lower structural part of the car instead of doubling up on weight. Also, the electric drivetrain is much lighter than a conventional drivetrain, so the whole cars ends up being about 500lbs more on average or about 15%. A lot of times that’s just the difference in model trim levels.

I was at Discount Tire last week, and a guy WTH Tesla came in and needed tires, he found out that he couldn’t get the ones that they didnt have them.
