It intrigues me to think that the gilded age is so romanticized, despite being wrought with wealth inequality. Having personally juxtaposed this, I find it infuriating that we live in possibly the most wealth inequal United States currently. No doubt, this was in part brought about by the advancement of AI. With these AI models, among other things, now being used to paint a wrongful picture of the past, is it exactly what one would expect? I think it may be; however one interprets it, I feel that observing human history, it’s funny in a disappointing way. Like so many other human actions, try as you may to do something about it, but in the end I guess you just have to laugh about some things.

15:33 not just ballgowns, but ahistorical ones. They’re not tight enough to be late 1870s when women temporarily abandoned the bustle, but they’re lacking the bustles that made 1870s and 1880s dresses so, well, shelf-butt.

Some fashion vloggers do say that corsets were not that restricting. They just created an illusion of a thin waist. People needed to function in them.

20:23 One other thing about the condition of the roads, or perhaps two: There were no painted lines, the clip looks like a modern road cleared for this scene. And even if they had painted lines back then, you wouldn’t have been able to see them under the layers of filth.

I’m addicted to the Nero Wolfe novels partly as a casual sort of amateur cultural anthropologist of the American century. It’s saddening how pop culture notions are cartoonishly distorted, leading to serious misunderstandings about almost everything. Nero Wolfe came well after the Gilded Age but there are echoes at least of the Roaring Twenties, then the depression, the war, and the dramatic postwar era when peace, prosperity, and the compression of wealth inequality coincided.

Nero Wolfe had an elevator, liked money and lived in a roomy double-width Manhattan brownstone, but was dedicated to justice and integrity and always paid every cent of tax he owed even at his marginal rate well above eighty percent, while only occasionally complaining.

There seems to be a great misconception about corsets. I represent the historical costuming community when I say that, as a standard, corsets weren’t designed to be uncomfortable. On the contrary, corsets were used to achieve the fashionable silhouette and styles of whichever era it was. Yes, a minority of women did tight lace or lace their corsets to a point wherein they were extremely uncomfortable to achieve a smaller waist or what have you; however, this was a minority and very uncommon, as most women weren’t trying to purposefully harm themselves for the sake of fashion. Again, corsets were not harmful in any manner as designed, but could be manipulated to produce harm. I hope this clears things up. Please stop perpetuating this stereotype that corsets were evil. If you are interested in learning more, I recommend checking out Nicole Rudolph’s videos on this or Abby Cox’s channel as they both talk in length about these topics. This notwithstanding, the video was great! 🙂
